Kevin Gates’ Trip To Mecca Has A Profound Effect On The Rapper Anybody who has followed Kevin Gates knows he’s a bit of a character. Still, one of the things he appears to take most seriously is his religion. As a man of Muslim faith and the means to make the trip, Gates made the Hajj to Mecca and it’s a trip he captured on video. He touched and kissed The Black Stone, which is located at the center of the Grand Mosque. His ensuing reaction and how he talks about the way he was embraced on the trip is definitely a cool thing to witness. Via XXL Anyone who follows Kevin Gates has seen a change in the Bread Winners Association boss in the last year. For one, he is now a married man having wed his longtime girlfriend last October. He has also become a devout Muslim. The Baton Rouge MC recently took the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia to visit the revered Kaaba, and from the looks of things it was a very spiritual experience for the platinum rapper. According to Muslim tradition, The Black Stone, located in the center of the Grand Mosque on the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba, is a monument that dates back to the era of Adam and Eve. Muslims from all over the world make the trip to Mecca during the Hajj and many visit the Black Stone to touch and kiss the darkened rock as part of the Tawaf ritual. Gates posted video to Instagram of himself and his wife approaching the Stone. He explains how one of the military men guarding the Stone invited him and her to kiss it, which he is humbled by. In the clip, Gates can be seen kissing the Stone at the designated location on the rock. As he makes contact with the Stone his shoulders start to quiver as if he has been moved to tears. A woman in the background then begins to shout in what sounds like Arabic. “This Man I’ve never met – embraced me as if we had known each other our entire lives – one of the greatest Muslims I’ve met in my life – #AllahuAkbar,” he captioned the video. “To be be healed is to be be healed from all things – I’ll never forget this day – in this life and the here after – May Peace Be Upon you All,” he added. Gates seems to be in a good space religiously, financially and music wise. It was recently revealed that his debut album Islah has been certified platinum. Spearheaded by the double platinum single “2 Phones,” it is the first debut album released in 2016 to reach the milestone. And he did it without any features. Word to J. Cole. Roland Martin sat down with legendary actor and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte on Wednesday for an exclusive interview. During their discussion, Martin and Belafonte covered a variety of topics including Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the national anthem.
Colin Kaepernick is not done stirring up controversy. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has become a household name, as well as a subject of major national debate, after he took a scandalous stance last Friday. During the playing of the national anthem prior to a preseason football game, Kaepernick did not get up off the bench. He simply sat their quietly, refusing to show respect for the United States while its theme song played overhead. The arrow in the photo below is pointing at Kaepernick while he committed this act of defiance. It has gone viral, even beyond sports fans: Referencing the tragic rash of African-American deaths at the hands of police officers over the past several months, Kaepernick made it very clear why he’s taking this measure. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he told NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick has since said he’ll continue to sit down during the Star-Spangled Banner until some kind of “significant” change takes place. Now, with opinions divided between those disgusted over Kaepernick’s lack of patriotic respect and those who appreciate the attention he’s brought to a pressing national issue… a new controversy has arisen. Over an old topic. Photos surfaced today of Kaepernick wearing socks on the field that depict police officers as pigs. The photos are actually from training camp of this year, but Kaepernick did not hesitate to address the basis for this attire on Instagram. He was very upfront over why he made this fashion statement at the time. “I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments, not only put the community in danger, but also put the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust,” he wrote. “I have two uncles and friends who are police officers and work to protect and serve ALL people. “So before these socks, which were worn before I took my public stance, are used to distract from the real issues, I wanted to address this immediately.” You’ve gotta admire Kaepernick for just coming right out and speaking his mind. He’s not beating around any bushes, he’s sticking up for what he believes in. Well, not everyone has to admire this, we guess. But some folks out there do. Kaepernick actually led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013. His stock has fallen tremendously since then, as he actually lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert last year.
