Y esterday, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted executive clemency to 11 people and none of them was  Cyntoia Brown . In a news release, he said, “I am pleased to grant these acts of clemency. These individuals have made positive contributions to their communities and deserve pardons, or are individuals who will receive another chance to become contributing members of society by virtue of their commutations.” See Also: Mia Love Whines People Don’t Like Her Because She’s Black, Not Because She Supported A Racist Cyntoia Brown was 16 years old in 2004 when she shot and killed  Johnny Mitchell Allen , 43, in self-defense. She thought he was reaching for a gun after he solicited her for sex. Prosecutors argued she wanted to rob Allen, not defend herself. After being tried as an adult, Brown was convicted of first-degree murder in 2006. Due to outrage on social media, and attention from  Rihanna and  Kim Kardashian,  her story went viral. The case eventually made it to the Tennessee Supreme Court due to the work not from celebrities but prison reform advocates. On Dec. 8, CNN.com reported, “On Thursday the court said defendants like Cyntoia Brown, who are convicted of first-degree murder committed after July 1, 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment, can’t become eligible for release from prison before serving more than five decades. The court’s five justices were unanimous in their decision against Brown.” The Tennessee Supreme Court explained their ruling in a statement that read in part “under state law, a life sentence is a determinate sentence of 60 years. However, the sixty-year sentence can be reduced by up to 15 percent, or 9 years, by earning various sentence credits.” Brown’s case is pending judgment in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, but Haslam could have been the one to give her a second chance. See Also: President Donald Trump’s Voter Fraud Claims Could Lead To More Voter Suppression CNN.com reports that due to Tropical Storm Michael in Florida, “Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum announced Sunday he will be leaving the campaign trail briefly to address storm preparations. The forecast projects Tallahassee, where Gillum is mayor, will be directly hit.” Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency on October 7. The election is on November 6 and things are looking promising for Gillum to make history. A Sept. 28-30 P ublic Policy Polling (PPP) showed Gillum up by 4 points over DeSantis. Quinnipiac University poll had Gillum out-polling DeSantis by 9 points. However, we all know how polls can be wrong, let’s not forget the polls that convinced people Hillary Clinton would win. The state deadline to register to vote in Florida is tomorrow. If you, your friends, or family members aren’t registered, do it now, especially if you are outraged by the Stand Your Ground laws. Bill Cosby Might Be In Prison On Monday

View post:

O n Monday, Bill Cosby will be sentenced for his conviction  on all three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging Andrea Constand before he sexually assaulted her at his Philadelphia home in 2004. The legendary comedian might be headed to prison that same day. READ MORE: Full Coverage Of Bill Cosby’s Retrial For Sexual Assault After he was found guilty in April , prosecutors asked for Cosby to be incarcerated immediately, but the judge released him on $1 million bail and ordered him to stay his home until the sentencing. Now, according to TMZ , “Authorities connected to the case tell TMZ … prosecutors will push for the disgraced comedian/felon to be immediately hauled off to prison once the judge sentences him Monday AM.” Cosby will be sentenced at Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas and the 81-year-old is facing 30 years in prison. Over several decades, he has been accused of assaulting over 60 women. Constand and at least five other accusers will be at the sentencing but they will not be able to testify. According to NBC News , “Cosby’s lawyers opposed the request for additional accusers to testify at the sentencing hearing. Judge O’Neill agreed, writing in his order that in an ‘exhaustive review’ of state case law he found nothing allowing him to consider ‘uncharged conduct” at the sentencing.” Cosby’s legal team is appealing the verdict and if he is allowed to be released while fighting for an appeal, he will more than likely never be in prison.
