From Costumes To Production Design, Twitter Is LIVING For ‘Black Panther’s Early Oscars Sweep

Source: Jeff Kravitz / Getty Black Panther Wins The Oscars For Both Costume Design & Production Design The Oscars have been under way for less that an hour, and Black Panther has already taken home two awards. Ruth E. Carter scored her first costume design Oscar nomination in 1993 for Spike Lee’s  Malcolm X, and tonight, she made history as the first Black woman to win Best Costume Design.  Carter was a crucial part in dressing the entire nation of Wakanda in Black Panther,  creating everything from Chadwick Boseman’s suit to the Dora Milaje’s armor. Her award also marks the first Oscar won by Marvel Studios–but only a few minutes later, Marvel and Black Panther racked up another one. Hannah Beachler is not only the first African American ever nominated for the award in production design–but now, she’s the first to win, too. She traveled around Africa researching cultures, locations, and ideas that helped to create the cinematic world of Wakanda and clearly, it paid off. regina king — ruth e. carter — hannah beachler — these three black women have #oscars !!!!!!! — Vulture (@vulture) February 25, 2019 Both the clothing and the atmosphere imagined in Black Panther were honored at The Oscars tonight, and as the show goes on, we can only hope the film takes home the other two awards they’re nominated for, Best Picture and Best Original Score. Here’s how Twitter was celebrating the two early wins for Black Panther and the powerful women who created the world we all love watching. Ruth E. HEY AUNTIE! 5 Reasons Why Di Bleck Pentha Should Win Best Picture At The Oscars

Source: Marvel-Disney The Oscar Case For “Black Panther” Black History Month 2019 has been the spiciest dumpster fire of our lifetime –a cold, saltless, sadness-flavored McDonald’s fry withering away in a Walmart parking lot–no, seriously, it’s been Shemar Moore’s raggedy cornrow wiglet from “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in February form. But, um, at least we can watch “Black Panther” defy the odds and pry Best Picture from the Academy’s crusty white hands. And yes, there’s a chance–a very small, balled up lunch lady ponytail of a chance–that Marvel’s biggest (and Blackity Blackest) blockbuster will win and I’ve laid out my compelling case below. So here's the thing, M'Baku is PERFECT. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/r7xZgq6msF — Strong Black Lead (@strongblacklead) September 11, 2018 1. M’Baku’s LEGENDARY Challenge Day speech Winston Duke’s spectacular monologue isn’t “I Have A Dream” but it’s close. CHALLENGE DEY. FADDA SEFE. WE WILL NOT AVE IT, O. GLORY TO HANUMAN. So. Many. Hits. And felt the greatest Que probate ever. (Now, don’t get it twisted, Samuel L. Jackson is still the Monologue Gawd and President of the CAPS LOCK Coalition but our good mountain bruh M’Baku delivered the most quotable scene of 2018) Hey Auntie #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/Xkn8s9Fe5W — FREEISH (@freeishmedia) February 18, 2018 2. “Hey Auntie!” I’ll never forget the theater swerving into chaos when Killmonger dropped “hey auntie!” It was just so deliciously Black–“light ice”-Black–and felt like Jenifer Lewis reaching deep into her purse and handing you dusty butterscotches in church. Ryan Coogler be knowin. Moments like these just show the relationship that T'Challa and Shuri have as siblings, and I buy it. #SaturdayNightScifi #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/wBBY1JKufp — Chris Burris (@burriscj) February 24, 2019 3. Funniest “what are thooose???” joke ever (many, many years later) I’ve watched “Black Panther” 7978696987 times and laughed at Shuri’s “what are those???” joke all 7978696987 times (because I’m 12). It’s that one Facebook joke from 2002 your mama texted you this week that actually made you laugh. So proudly corny yet fresh. Classic. When Forrest Whitaker says “Bleck Pentha” pic.twitter.com/90EUxvs3VD — Maliik (@Obee1ne) February 26, 2018 4. Forrest Whitaker’s Bleck Pentha Powah Very few things were funnier in 2018 than Forrest Whitaker’s wonky-eyed Wakandan accent. The whole entire theater cackled at every ‘bleck’ and ‘pentha’. All chill was streept eweh and it’s STILL hilarious. One of my favorite parts of #BlackPanther is when the Ques came in at the end to save the Deltas from the Sigmas. #ColemanLove pic.twitter.com/UbAkHLkVaY — Nisan Joseph (@NisanJoseph) February 17, 2018 5. Pop Culture-Shaping Impact “Black Panther” changed the world. Literally. From showing our people being amazing, to adding ‘colonizer’ to our vocabulary to weaponizing a wig to making the sciences appealing to young Black kids across the world. It was truly a world-stopping moment and the best film I saw in 2018.

See the original post:

Source: The Rewind / Global Grind It’s the end of another week, which means it’s time for another episode of Global Grind’s The Rewind .  Just in case you’re new here, or maybe you simply forgot how this whole thing works,  every week Global Grind’s resident critics, DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius, discuss the cultural happenings of the last week. They’ll take some time to explain what you may have missed, offer their expert insight and then when they’re all done, rate them from a 1-10. In case you have been living under a rock,  The Rewind will always be here to get you right. This week, we’re switching up the tempo and taking some time to celebrate Black History Month. That’s right! We’re three weeks into February so it’s only right we take some time to pay tribute and take special attention to all things BLACK! This week, we’re highlighting the top 5 millennial film & TV stars whose work is most likely go down in Black history. We’re sure you have an idea of who you would choose, but let’s see what DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius say. In no particular order, our resident critics, Franchise and Landon Levarius, chose Lena Waithe as their first millennial star.  Lena is already well on her way to making black history. In fact, she made history in 2017 when she became the first Black woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Her Thanksgiving episode of Netflix’s “Masters of None” remains untouchable and she continues to create more and more content for the culture including “The Chi” on Showtime, “Boomerang” on BET, an upcoming series with Kid Fury coming to HBO and so much more. It’s a given that Lena Waithe will be creating more Black history in her career. The fourth Black millennial to make the list is Oakland’s own Ryan Coogler. Ryan has given us Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, Creed, he’s teamed up with Lebron James for the upcoming Space Jam sequel and he has much more on the way. When it comes to promising millennials in film that you absolutely must watch, Ryan Coogler is high on the list. He’s proven that he can direct phenomenal films and has no intentions of slowing down. It’ll be wonderful to see what other projects he comes up with in the next year. What other creatives do you think made our list? Press play on episode 31 of The Rewind to find out.

SMH: It Looks Like Kendrick Lamar & SZA Won’t Be Performing “All The Stars” At The Oscars

Source: Scott Dudelson / Getty SZA & Kendrick Lamar Won’t Be Performing Oscar-Nominated “All The Stars” According to an exclusive report from Variety , Kendrick Lamar and SZA won’t be performing at The Oscars this year. Despite efforts from The Academy to secure the TDE labelmates for a performance of the their Oscar-nominated collaboration, “All the Stars” on the upcoming Oscars telecast. The reason for the two not performing their track from Black Panther Soundtrack , according to a source close to the situation, is both logistics and timing. Lamar was also noticeably absent from Grammys this year, after reports that he declined performing for that broadcast, as well. All four of the other nominated songs–“When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (Gillian Welch and David Rowlings), “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” (Bette Midler and Marc Shaiman), “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” (Jennifer Hudson) and “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” (Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper)–will be performed. A previous plan for The Oscars was reportedly to showcase only “All the Stars” and “Shallow,” but that was quickly changed in the face of backlash and nominee solidarity, also following a report from Variety about that plan. “All the Stars” was nominated for four Grammys this year, including nods for both record of the year and song of the year. “King’s Dead,” another one from the Black Panther Soundtrack , earned Kendrick Lamar and his partner Jay Rock a Grammy for best rap performance, while Ludwig Göransson’s original score won a Grammy for best score soundtrack for visual media. Even though their lack of performance has been confirmed, there’s still no word on whether or not Kendrick Lamar and/or SZA will be in attendance at the Oscars ceremony.

Dennis Smith Jr. & Under Armour Bless Fayetville, NC With Some Newly Refurbished Basketball Courts

Source: Under Armour / Under Armour The New York Knick’s Dennis Smith Jr . might’ve struck out at the 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but the hoopers in his old stomping grounds of Fayetteville, NC were still winners at the end of NBA All-Star Weekend. In conjunction with Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, Dennis Smith Jr. and Under Armour went to DSJ’s hometown and treated the city to a carnival-style celebration as part of the unveiling of two refurbished basketball courts at the Smith Recreation Center. Seabrook Park at Smith Recreation Center is where Dennis grew up learning and growing his unique brand of basketball. Countless hours spent on these courts molded Dennis into the athlete he’s become – in his never ending pursuit of getting better. Now, with Under Armour, Dennis has the opportunity to pay it back and pave a way forward for the next generation of Fayetteville dreamers, helping to completely refurbish and revitalize the two courts he grew up playing on. And now he’s made it possible for someone else from his old home to follow in his footsteps and make their way to the NBA. Much props to Dennis Smith Jr, Under Armour and the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation for giving this to the community. Check out pics below. Jordan’s Sundance Film Festival flirtation caught the attention of more than one onlooker apparently… Sources told Page Six the stars of ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ and ‘Black Panther’ arrived to Tao’s Park City pop-up separately but “within 10 minutes of each other,” and wasted no time spending the entire time together! A source said: “They were put at separate VIP tables, but Kiki quickly made her way over to Michael’s table. And they seriously never left each other’s side. Canoodling to the max.” The source added, “She would have her hand on the back of his head rubbing it as he whispered in her ear and [he] kept kissing her cheek.” Even though “it was clear to everyone in the room that they were together,” the source surmised, we hear that the stars’ entourages were “protective about them not taking a photo together.” Jordan and Layne also left the event at the same time. Rubbing the back of his head, eh? Y’all know what that means… Chocolatey smithereens!
