During a set visit for Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster Captain Marvel , last year, Sam Jackson revealed his era of choice was the 60s and shared his thoughts on today’s music. “Revolutionary things were changing things and everything was happening – sex, drugs, cheap thrills,” he explained during a candid convo. “Then the 70s, I went to New York and did the theater thing, which was a great creative awesome time.” MUST READ: ‘Captain Marvel’ Is A Woman And She’s Here To Save The Universe Source: Marvel Studios / Marvel Studios Captain Marvel is set in the 90s, which means we get to see Mr. Jackson’s Marvel character Nick Fury in his youth…and sans the eye patch. While reflecting on the golden era, Sam revealed, “By the time the 90s happened I was in Hollywood. A different kind of work ethic moving through it. Usually your ball-out times are the times you feel like there’s music you can relate to. When I Iisten to a commercial now, I’m like wow they’re using James Brown in a commercial, never thought that would happen.” He continued, “When you listen now and go, which one of these songs are they going to be playing 20 years from now? Will they be playing Drake in 20 years? Fetty Wap? We were trying to figure out yesterday, who’s the great solo artist now that? I’m talking about soul. We were listening to Stevie Wonder yesterday and going through this marvelous song clip that Stevie’s had for 30 years. Who’s that 30-year person for this generation.” When the reporters in the room suggested, “Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars?” He responded, “Bruno Mars is the Frankie Beverly of the millennials. He’s millennial cookout music.” So who is Sam Jackson listening to? “I listen to hip-hop.” Rae Sremmurd. Reggae. I’m waiting on Buju to get out.” [This interview is from 2018] Catch Captain Marvel in theaters March 8. RELATED STORIES: Watch: Samuel L. Source: Jeff Kravitz / Getty Black Panther Wins The Oscars For Both Costume Design & Production Design The Oscars have been under way for less that an hour, and Black Panther has already taken home two awards. Ruth E. Carter scored her first costume design Oscar nomination in 1993 for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, and tonight, she made history as the first Black woman to win Best Costume Design. Carter was a crucial part in dressing the entire nation of Wakanda in Black Panther, creating everything from Chadwick Boseman’s suit to the Dora Milaje’s armor. Her award also marks the first Oscar won by Marvel Studios–but only a few minutes later, Marvel and Black Panther racked up another one. Hannah Beachler is not only the first African American ever nominated for the award in production design–but now, she’s the first to win, too. She traveled around Africa researching cultures, locations, and ideas that helped to create the cinematic world of Wakanda and clearly, it paid off. regina king — ruth e. carter — hannah beachler — these three black women have #oscars !!!!!!! — Vulture (@vulture) February 25, 2019 Both the clothing and the atmosphere imagined in Black Panther were honored at The Oscars tonight, and as the show goes on, we can only hope the film takes home the other two awards they’re nominated for, Best Picture and Best Original Score. Source: Disney / Disney / Marvel Studios By now you’ve probably seen the epic trailer for Captain Marvel , the next movie from the Marvel Studios that stars Brie Larson , Samuel L Jackson and newcomer Lashana Lynch who plays Maria, the best friend of Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers. I went down to Baton Rouge, Louisana to find out more about Marvel’s next big blockbuster. We headed into Maria’s living room, that was an old farmhouse on a large patch of land. Entering the house you immediately felt like you were thrown back in time to the 90s. Everything from the decor to the logos on the snack in the kitchen screamed the 90s. Brie Larson rocked Nine Inch Nails t-shirt during our interview, which is one of Carol’s favorite groups. Source: Disney / Disney / Marvel Studios Captain Marvel occupies a space before Iron Man and we will see Carol Danvers carve out a space for herself in a world before superheroes. This can be considered an origin story for the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe as this would be the world’s first encounter with superheroes especially Nick Fury. Who has two eyes and isn’t the big dog to the whole Avengers program yet. Seeing him witness superpowers for the first time should be a fun experience for fans of the Marvel franchise. The filmmakers are allowing Captain Marvel to be the bridge between the Earth side of the MCU and the space side, as you will get to see a lot of that in this movie. It starts in outer space with the Cree Empire who are at war with the Skrulls and over the course of the movie Captain Marvel will travel to Earth and continue her adventure here on Earth. Brie Larson is taking this role very seriously putting in a tremendous amount of work to be as strong as a superhero, she worked out for 9 months to be able to move a car and did 90% of her own stunts. She revealed, “A lot of that came from Ignorance I thought you when you sign up for a movie like this you have to do your own stunts, and I’m an introvert with asthma so I thought I gotta get my shit together to be able to keep up with this movie.” After Brie completed her first fight sequence where she did all the work herself and every move herself that the studio came up to her to reveal no one does this. Brie said she was told, “Nobody trains with the stunt team for 3 months before a movie to learn how to do this. It just doesn’t happen, but for me, if she’s the strongest character in this universe and she’s able to move a planet I should be able to push a car. It makes the story feel more complete to me that I can talk about what’s it’s actually like to feel strong in my body as a self-identifying woman. I do feel strong, I trained for 9 months and it consumed my whole world it was no joke.” Source: Disney / Disney / Marvel Studios Brie really went through the motions with this film, even overcome her fear of flying by going up in a fighter jet with trained pilots and experiencing a dogfight and hitting some pretty bad turbulence that she thought was significant but later found out it was just moderate, “we had really bad turbulence and we were running out of gas and she thought we are not going to make it. I was like oh planes can take even more than this? It really helped me overcome that fear.” Going through G-Force that’s a 6.5 and living to tell about it, will help you feel invincible. Samuel L Jackson also discussed how this Nick Fury is different from the Nick’s he’s played in the past. “The hard job for me is being a Nick Fury that is a bureaucrat. He’s been a desk jockey for a while after he left the spy business, now he is riding a desk and his job trying to figure out where the next threat coming from. Then all of a sudden he meets this person and see these things and realizes there is a threat out there too. Believing in aliens is just not something we’re wired for until you see them. Its like oh shit they are out there. Now the job is convincing the people with the money that we need to figure out a way to fight something that doesn’t live here. That can do things that we can’t do. That’s the beginning of Nick Fury’s fight with the bureaucrats.” This movie will spark Nick’s mission to find people that can do things humans can’t do to help them fight this threat. The trailer looks insane and the set was a beautiful throwback to the 90s and I for one can’t wait for Captain Marvel to hit theaters March 9th, 2019.
After Disney and Fox agreed to a deal that would return X-Men and Fantastic Four properties back to Marvel Studios, rumors began floating around that Fox’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants movies might be shelved as Marvel would likely want to reboot the X-Men franchise with their own cast. Truth be told after the fracas that was X-Men: Apocalypse that would’ve been a welcomed direction and word is that aside from Ryan Renolds’ Deadpool, everyone was getting replaced. And yes, that includes Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you view the situation) both the Dark Phoenix and New Mutant films are slated to drop in 2019 per the IMAX quarterly earnings report which lets investors know which films are going to be releasing. Originally set to drop on November 2, 2018, X-Men: Dark Phoenix now has a release date of February 14, 2019 while The New Mutants has been moved from February 22, 2019 to August 2, 2019. While the possibility still remains that Marvel will decide to shelve the projects in order to start with a clean slate going into Phase 4 of their post- Infinty War Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems like we may in fact get to see if writer/director Simon Kinberg will be able to correct the trainwreck that was his original Dark Phoenix storyline in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand . For the record, we’re not too optimistic. Are you interested in seeing X-Men: Dark Phoenix after witnessing what Apocalypse was or are you hoping Marvel completely reboots the franchise?
