Clark Gregg has gone from babysitting the Avengers to child actors. Gregg, aka S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson , took a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to write, direct and star in his second feature Trust Me , in which he plays another kind of highly specialized agent — the Hollywood kind, for kids. What drove Gregg — who will return as Coulson on Marvel’s upcoming TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. despite being killed off in The Avengers — to roll up his sleeves again and make a second film? “I think people have realized that if you spend some time acting, you learn something about writing and directing as well. Not all of them can do it, but certainly Ben Affleck has proved that he can [as have] a lot of other people. Since we can now utter the words “the Oscar-nominated Marvel’s The Avengers ,” let’s take a closer look at all that visual effects magic that went into making Joss Whedon’s blockbuster superhero pic such a bombastic VFX achievement. More specifically, as is apparent in ILM’s recently-released Oscar VFX reel, take a gander at the digital wizardry that bore Mark RuffaHulk and the maelstrom of Chitauri invaders and explosions and costumed superheroes that went into The Avengers ‘ carefully orchestrated chaos of a final showdown. The Avengers is up for the Visual Effects Academy Award against The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , Life of Pi , Prometheus , and Snow White and the Huntsman . (I’m a bit surprised to see The Impossible ‘s tsunami VFX not on this list, especially after Hereafter’s similar waterworks earned an Oscar nod, but it’s a crowded field.) In an Indiewire roundtable I guested on yesterday, Devin Faraci of Badass Digest pointed out that this category feels like it boils down to the character-based VFX achievements of The Hobbit and The Avengers . I’d lean towards the shiny new Gollum, but ILM’s reel highlights just how much environment-smashing action was crafted for The Avengers in addition to creating the most lifelike Hulk we’ve seen in Marvel’s last few big-screen attempts. Year on year, Hollywood’s box office receipts rise. And while the 2012 numbers came in higher than 2011, the year marked a specifically good turn for the movie industry: the number of actual tickets sold went up for the first time in three years. The year’s big numbers come despite a generally slow summer blockbuster season. The number of admissions have had a general decline for a decade, with the number of tickets sold flat lining in 2011 with 1.29 billion, which was the lowest number since 1995, according to A.P. Dollar amounts typically rise despite the decline of audiences numbers due to the rise in ticket prices. But for 2012, ticket sales rose 5.6 percent to 1.36 billion by December 31. The number is still significantly below the peak of 1.6 billion sold in 2002. On the overall revenue side, the domestic box office should top out 6 percent ahead of the $10.2 billion figure last year and also top Hollywood’s previous $10.6 billion record set in 2009. Leading the list of box office hits was Disney’s The Avengers with $623 million domestically ($1.5 billion worldwide) and Warner Bros.’ third Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises with $448 million domestically ($1.1 billion worldwide). Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games grossed over $408 million ($686.5 million) while Sony’s James Bond pic Skyfall reached nearly $280 million as of Sunday (and will likely surpass $1 billion this week); The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has a domestic total so far of nearly $282 million ($759.1 million worldwide); The Amazing Spider-Man topped out at just over $262 million in the U.S. ($752 million worldwide). Other big 2012 titles included Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted ($216 million) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($161 million). And Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has totaled $157 million domestically since opening December 14th in the U.S. While it’s good news for Hollywood, the future of the box office dollar continues to like overseas. International audiences used to amount to less than half of a typical release, but that figure has swelled to two or even three times dollars spent domestically. Even pics such as Battleship and John Carter which tanked in the U.S. came out decently overseas ($209.7 million abroad for John Carter and $237.6 million for Battleship ). The domestic market has also been hampered with the advent of ever-sophisticated home entertainment systems, portable devices and video games. Still, most agree the big screen experience with an audience is the best way to see a movie. “Every home has a kitchen, but you can’t get into a good restaurant on Saturday night,” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros told A.P. “People want to escape. That’s the nature of society. The adult population just is not going to sit home seven days a week, even though they have technology in their home that’s certainly an improvement over what it was 10 years ago. People want to get out of the house, and no matter what they throw in the face of theatrical exhibition, it continues to perform at a strong level.” [ Sources: A.P. , Box Office Mojo ]

Al Pacino Takes On Rocker Role Pacino will appear in Dan Fogelman’s Imagine , alongside Jeremy Renner – as the 40-year-old son with whom he tries to reconnect – and Julianne Moore, as the owner of the hotel he moves into on his quest for spiritual absolution. He is an aging rocker who turns over a new leaf after discovering an undelivered letter written by John Lennon to his 19-year-old self, The Guardian and Deadline report . Hobbit Running Time Revealed “It’s looking like it’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was,” explains Jackson. “So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet. I mean, Fellowship was just under three hours and this is about 2 hours 40 minutes at the moment.” Empire reports . Battleground Cabler Offering Anti-Obama Doc for Free “Armstrong Utilities is the nation’s 15th-largest cable provider and operates in 6 states including Ohio and Pennsylvania, two crucial battleground states in the 2012 election. In Ohio alone Armstrong is available in over 50 cities and towns in 10 Ohio counties. So it’s all the more controversial that the cabler is offering the anti-Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America ’s as a “Free Movie Special” to all its subscribers on demand at no charge, Deadline reports . Spider-Man Musical Writer Gets Book Deal “The big-budget production – featuring music by U2’s Bono and The Edge – was plagued by problems including delays and a series of stunt accidents. Publishers say Berger’s book will give the ‘ultimate fly-on-the-wall account.’ Song of Spider-Man: The Inside Story of the Most Controversial Musical in Broadway History is due out next year, BBC reports .

This week’s Low(brow) choice may have been a box-office-record-smashing mass-appeal hit, but it’s also a genre classic that sneaks a healthy dollop of wit and even subtlety into its comic-book storyline. On the High side: two swoony love stories from a modern master . With movies this good, labeling almost seems beside the point. HIGH: Wong Kar-Wai Blu-Ray Double Feature: Fallen Angels and Happy Together (Kino Lorber; $49.95 Blu-Ray) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Both films: Written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Casts: Leon Lai, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Karen Mok ( Angels ); Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung ( Happy ). WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Fallen Angels tells a tale originally designed to be part of Wong’s Chungking Express , about a lovesick hit man (Lai), a mute guy with a talent for breaking and entering (Kaneshiro) and a girl named Blondie (Mok). Although, as with most films by this auteur, what happens to these characters is less important than how they’re lit and what music they listen to. In the ironically-titled gay romance Happy Together , Lai (Leung) and Ho (Cheung) travel from Hong Kong to Argentina in an attempt to repair their thoroughly dysfunctional relationship. It doesn’t help. (The Tony Leung Chiu-Wai of this film starred in John Woo’s Hard-Boiled and Wong’s In the Mood for Love , and is not to be confused with Tony Leung Ka-fai from The Lover .) WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: Wong and his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, create heartbreaking visual tone poems that are unique among contemporary movies. These aren’t the kinds of films where you ask “What’s it about?” or “What happens?” Instead, you have to let them take you where they want — on their terms and at their own pace. But if you’re patient enough, Wong will guide you into his characters’ hearts and heads, and the rewards are immeasurable. In this context, a glance, a pop song or even a color can speak volumes. WHY YOU NEED TO BUY IT (AGAIN): Not every director’s work makes a big leap in going from regular DVD to hi-res Blu-Ray, but Doyle is one of the great visual artists in film right now, and the crisper you can see his amazing images, the better. (All the more reason to get psyched about the upcoming In the Mood for Love Blu-Ray coming next month from The Criterion Collection.) This double-feature collection doesn’t skimp on the extras, either: Angels offers three behind-the-scenes featurettes and an interview with Dolan. Happy Together includes a making-of doc ( Buenos Aires Zero Degree ) and a 2008 conversation with Wong from the Museum of the Moving Image. LOW: The Avengers (Walt Disney Home Entertainment; $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Two-Disc Blu-Ray Combo, $49.99 Four-Disc Blu-Ray Combo) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written and directed by Joss Whedon, from a story by Whedon and Zak Penn, based on the comic book by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby; starring Robert Downey, Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Oh, like you don’t know: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finally gets his hands on the Cosmic Cube that’s been bouncing through most of the previous Marvel superhero movies, and it takes the combined might of Iron Man (Downey), the Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Hemsworth), Captain America (Evans), Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) to save the planet from alien invasion. WHY IT’S FUN: Whedon gets the appeal of superhero comic books in the same way that Raiders of the Lost Ark demonstrated Lucas and Spielberg’s instinctual understanding of what made old-school adventure serials so fun. (For all the successes of the Spider-Man movies, for instance, you’d never know that the comic-book character was a one-liner-spouting sarcasm machine.) While Whedon never underplays the high stakes of the plot, he lets these characters be funny, bitchy and untrusting of each other before they bond through their shared adventures. It’s an epic, breathtaking pop thrill ride that doesn’t spare the smarts or the endorphins. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT: Seeing as how it’s one of the most successful movies ever made, The Avengers comes to home video in a number of different incarnations, including a four-disc set that includes a 3D Blu-Ray option. The extras themselves are plentiful, if not earth-shaking, and include a Whedon commentary, star-packed making-of shorts, a look at the visual effects, deleted scenes, a gag reel and a Soundgarden music video.
