The Avengers Sink Battleship at the Box Office

Another Monday morning, and thus another look at what carnage The Avengers has wrought at the weekend box office. And while things aren’t as bad as they may look at first for Battleship and the rest of the competition, they’re not what you’d call pretty. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $55,057,000 ($457,078,000) Screens: 4,249 (PSA $12,958) Weeks: 3 (Change: -46.6%) Marvel’s megahit settled into No. 10 all-time in terms of domestic gross, No. 6 all-time in terms of global gross, and became the highest-grossing US release ever for Disney… in three weeks . It should wind up in top three in all the major box-office categories by the time it’s done, leaving unanswered only the question of where it will stand two months from now against The Dark Knight Rises . Which I’m sure is a question you are very much preoccupying yourself with. Anyway, hats off to all. 2. Battleship Gross: $25,300,000 (new) Screens: 3,690 (PSA: $6,856) Weeks: 1 Did Hasbro and Universal want a better domestic turnout for their huge-budget board-game spectacular? Of course they did. Is this the worst-case scenario for either/or/both? Hardly, especially after a foreign run that has already pulled in $215 million. John Carter it’s not , though don’t be surprised if you happen to see at least one head rolling around the studio lot sometime in the next or two. Whose will it be? Place your wager in the comments! 3. The Dictator Gross: $17,415,000 ($24,456,000) Screens: 3,008 (PSA $5,790) Weeks: 1 On the one hand, not a terrible showing on a congested weekend for an R-rated comedy full of Sacha Baron Cohen’s usual shtick. On the other, shtick aside, we finally get an original script not based on a board-game, a self-help book, a ’60s TV show, etc., and it lurches quietly into third place. I feel like we need to support these things on principle, folks. So what if you only laugh four times in 80 minutes? It’s better than throwing up in your mouth four times or renouncing moviegoing altogether, no? OK, don’t answer that. 4. Dark Shadows Gross: $12,770,000 ($50,908,000) Screens: 3,755 (PSA $3,401) Weeks: 2 (Change: -57.0%) Oy: A 57 percent drop in week two for a Johnny Depp film — his worst since Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End plunged 61.5 percent in 2007. Of course, that was after a $139 million Memorial Day opening , so… yeah. Perspective. Not good. 5. What to Expect When You’re Expecting Gross: $10,500,000 (new) Screens: 3,021 (PSA: $3,476) Weeks: 1 Yikes! And the reviews were so good , too. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. Chris Pine Wrote a Movie Called Mantivities

That’s right, Mantivities . Star Trek ‘s Chris Pine , along with five of his buddies, wrote the comedy script; he’ll produce and star under director Michael Patrick Jann ( The State , Reno 911! ). Writes Deadline : “The comedy focuses on a group of friends in their early 30s, all in various stages of permanent adolescence. They get together with the aim of helping one of them grow up… ‘I couldn’t be happier to begin the adventure of making Mantivities knowing how much fun we all had writing it,’ Pine said. ‘Somehow I get to laugh with my friends and call it work.’” [ Deadline ]

Guess Robert Downey Jr.’s Projected Avengers Payday

The Marvel Studios front office may be notoriously loaded with cheapskates who’ve built a multibillion-dollar empire from the ground up in less than five years thanks to thrifty dealmaking, but at least one star has done enough franchise grunt work to get paid for the record-shattering blockbuster that is The Avengers . And when I say “paid,” I mean paid . Let’s hear it for Robert Downey Jr.! Or at least for Robert Downey Jr.’s agents, according to THR : According to multiple knowledgeable sources, Iron Man/Tony Stark is set for a highflying payday of about $50 million once box-office bonuses and backend compensation are factored in. (Two sources claim the number could go higher than $50 million once the ultimate box-office haul of Avengers is known, but another cautions that it could be years before the final number is known.) While on par with the upper echelon of franchise movie stars, that number blows away his superhero co-stars, all of whom will make a small fraction of Downey’s total, even as Avengers has a shot at topping the final Harry Potter film’s $1.32 billion global haul. Why the difference? When Marvel’s Iron Man grossed a surprising $585 million worldwide in 2008, Downey’s reps at CAA and the Hansen Jacobson law firm renegotiated a deal to include what multiple sources say is a slice of Marvel’s revenue from future movies in which he plays Iron Man (one source puts it in the 5 percent to 7 percent range; another source disputes the percentage. Marvel and Downey’s reps declined comment). Of course, profit participation is nothing new — Jack Nicholson probably just earned another $1,000 for Batman in the time it took to write this post — but compared to Marvel’s deals with Jeremy Renner (roughly $2 million-$3 million plus bonuses), Samuel L. Jackson (roughly $6 million plus bonuses) and the rest, Downey is far and away the Avenger with the mostest. Or… however that phrase goes. No wonder Captain America wants to kick Iron Man’s ass. Dark Shadows Slumps Behind History-Making Avengers

Johnny Depp wanted his and Tim Burton’s gothic vampire comedy Dark Shadows to be anything but Twilight . Mission accomplished, I suppose: The film fizzled into a very distant second place behind another jaw-dropping performance by The Avengers , which continued to rewrite the blockbuster history books in its second weekend. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $103,163,000 ($373,182,000) Screens: 4,349 (PSA $23,721) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3%) This week in record-breaking: En route to the $1 billion threshold — which it reached Sunday — Disney’s superhero juggernaut stole the distinction of best second weekend ever from Avatar (whose own mark was $75.6 million) and experienced the best-ever second-weekend hold by a film that opened to more than $120 million. (We’ll no doubt get obscurer and obscurer as this thing rolls on.) It also became the fastest movie to reach $300 million and then $350 million domestically. Most observers conclude that a top-three all-time berth is likely on the domestic front — displacing The Dark Knight — but perhaps more mind-blowing is the likelihood of Joss Whedon’s film to rocket all the way to No. 4 all-time globally — behind Avatar, Titanic and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 — within the the next week . And it’s still got Tuvalu’s GDP beat . What can one say, other than, “Good luck, Battleship “? 2. Dark Shadows Gross: $28,805,000 (new) Screens: 3,755 (PSA: $7,671) Weeks: 1 The long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling performed pretty much as well as you might expect a long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling to perform: Soft — at least soft by Burton/Depp standards , which have been good for at least twice Dark Shadows ‘ opening two of the last three times they got together (2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ). Meanwhile, from atop its mountain of Avengers cash, Disney snickers knowingly in anticipation of the sixth installment of the lucrative Depp/Verbinski franchise it has on the way next summer in the way of The Lone Ranger AND the potential for Burton/Depp to rekindle their box-office fire with an Alice in Wonderland sequel. John Carter who ? 3. Think Like a Man Gross: $6,300,000 ($81,917,000) Screens: 2,052 (PSA $3,070) Weeks: 4 (Change: -22.3%) Meanwhile, how about that lucrative Tim Story/Taraji P. Henson partnership?! What? No? OK. 4. The Hunger Games Gross: $4,400,000 ($386,902,000) Screens: 2,531 (PSA $1,738) Weeks: 8 (Change: -21.3%) Gary Ross/Lenny Kravitz ? Ugh, fine . 5. The Lucky One Gross: $4,055,000 ($53,721,000) Screens: 2,839 (PSA: $1,428) Weeks: 4 (Change: -24.5%) Someone had to finish fifth. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Trailer for Ben Affleck’s Argo Teases Bizarre Slice of Hollywood-CIA History

Ben Affleck , director, makes his most ambitious movie yet in this fall’s Argo , the crazy true (and until recently, secret) story of how the CIA attempted to rescue six American diplomats during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis by disguising them as a film crew working on a science fiction movie. The first trailer for Argo ranks up there with the best we’ve seen all year, setting up the stranger-than-fiction premise with juicy moments from veteran thesps (John Goodman! Alan Arkin!) and up-and-comers (ladies and gentlemen, Scoot McNairy) alike as Affleck serves up a bizarre slice of history. Affleck directs from a script by Chris Terrio (based on Joshuah Bearman’s engrossing 2007 Wired article “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran”), casting himself as CIA officer Tony Mendez, the orchestrator of the so-called “Canadian Caper.” He’s joined by Goodman as Planet of the Apes Oscar-winner John Chambers, the Hollywood make-up artist who helped Mendez set up the operation, and Arkin as a producer delivering choice zingers (“If I’m doing a fake movie, it’s going to be a fake hit!”). In addition to folks like Goodman, Arkin, Victor Garber, Bryan Cranston, Michael Parks, Zeljko Ivanek, Affleck tapped a few rising actors to fill out his cast: Scoot McNairy ( Monsters ), Christopher Denham ( Sound of My Voice ), and Kerry Bishe ( Red State ) join Tate Donovan, Clea Duvall, and Rory Cochrane as the six imperiled diplomats. Add in the muted ’70s palette and sense of humor tempered by life-and-death stakes and you’ve got what promises to be an intriguingly layered ride, if Affleck the director can pull it off. Argo is slated for release on October 12, gunning for awards season. Verdict: If it measures up to the true story and the article it inspired, this could be great. Thrill me, Affleck.

U.S. Military SHIELD-ed from The Avengers Collaboration

The U.S. military has a history of joining forces with Hollywood. Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise and Peter Berg’s Battleship have cozied up to the military to take advantage of defense material, while the Pentagon gets to market itself to moviegoers. (To say nothing of the recent Navy SEAL showcase Act of Valor .) So how did The Avengers not make the cut? It seems that the Joss Whedon superhero spectacle was “too unrealistic” for military brass get involved. At the end of the day, it was Nick Fury’s SHIELD that clinched the decision (perhaps if they just stuck to the superheroes and alien invaders it would have been OK?) “We couldn’t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it,” said Phil Strub, the DOD’s Hollywood liaison. “To whom did SHIELD answer? Did we work for SHIELD? It just got to the point where it didn’t make any sense. We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn’t do anything [with the film].” [ WorstPreviews ]
