Guess Robert Downey Jr.’s Projected Avengers Payday

The Marvel Studios front office may be notoriously loaded with cheapskates who’ve built a multibillion-dollar empire from the ground up in less than five years thanks to thrifty dealmaking, but at least one star has done enough franchise grunt work to get paid for the record-shattering blockbuster that is The Avengers . And when I say “paid,” I mean paid . Let’s hear it for Robert Downey Jr.! Or at least for Robert Downey Jr.’s agents, according to THR : According to multiple knowledgeable sources, Iron Man/Tony Stark is set for a highflying payday of about $50 million once box-office bonuses and backend compensation are factored in. (Two sources claim the number could go higher than $50 million once the ultimate box-office haul of Avengers is known, but another cautions that it could be years before the final number is known.) While on par with the upper echelon of franchise movie stars, that number blows away his superhero co-stars, all of whom will make a small fraction of Downey’s total, even as Avengers has a shot at topping the final Harry Potter film’s $1.32 billion global haul. Why the difference? When Marvel’s Iron Man grossed a surprising $585 million worldwide in 2008, Downey’s reps at CAA and the Hansen Jacobson law firm renegotiated a deal to include what multiple sources say is a slice of Marvel’s revenue from future movies in which he plays Iron Man (one source puts it in the 5 percent to 7 percent range; another source disputes the percentage. Marvel and Downey’s reps declined comment). Of course, profit participation is nothing new — Jack Nicholson probably just earned another $1,000 for Batman in the time it took to write this post — but compared to Marvel’s deals with Jeremy Renner (roughly $2 million-$3 million plus bonuses), Samuel L. Jackson (roughly $6 million plus bonuses) and the rest, Downey is far and away the Avenger with the mostest. Or… however that phrase goes. No wonder Captain America wants to kick Iron Man’s ass. Margaret Extended Cut Coming to DVD

Good news for anyone who couldn’t get enough of Kenneth Lonergan’s flawed , fearless , possibly cursed epic Margaret : The forthcoming DVD will feature a 186-minute cut — 36 minutes longer than the version all but buried last year by Fox Searchlight before a cadre of critical supporters rallied on its behalf. The not-so-good news, if high-definition transfers of talky moral dramas are of particular importance to you: The 150-minute version will reportedly be the only one available on Blu-ray when it goes on sale July 10 . But hey. We take what we can get in this world. [ Amazon ]

WonderCon: Fox Searchlight Wants You to Join the Cult of Sound of My Voice

Screening the first 12 minutes of Sound of My Voice and a dynamic new trailer, Fox Searchlight opened WonderCon 2012 with everything they’ve got — footage, star/co-writer Brit Marling and director Zal Batmanglij, that viral secret handshake, and an in-character appearance by the film’s cult members Klaus and Mel, who addressed the Anaheim Convention Center crowd with a pitch to join them on a spiritual journey. Their invitation: Join them at Booth #348 today, where they’ll be happy to meet you, discuss their beloved leader from the year 2054, and “answer any questions and help you with your future.” Fox Searchlight has a lot more to work with here than they did with Marling’s previous film, Another Earth … will the cult viral elements and the played up sci-fi angle they’re working here today at WonderCon help entice audiences? Edgar Wright to Direct Johnny Depp in Night Stalker Remake

In what seems like a smart move for everyone involved, Disney has hired Edgar Wright ( Scott Pilgrim, Shaun of the Dead ) to direct Johnny Depp in The Night Stalker , a feature remake of the 1972 ABC made for TV movie of the same name and the series spin-off it inspired. The property follows reporter Carl Kolchak, whose investigations into criminal happenings lead him to all manner of supernatural villains; Depp will star as Kolchak, which sounds promising given Wright’s proven track record in genre work, even if it feels like similar stories have come and gone of late with nary a blip (the Vegas-set, vampire-themed Fright Night remake, for one). Despite the commercial disappointment of Scott Pilgrim (which nevertheless, it should be noted, went on to become a cult hit), the film demonstrated Wright’s strength of vision and knack for refreshing, energetic storytelling — qualities woefully lacking in Depp’s last few projects, with the exception of Rango . Even in the well-loved and storied character of Jack Sparrow in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean there was a glint sadly, noticeably missing from Depp’s eyes. Call it passion, or inspiration, or energy; Depp can pull off a starring turn in his sleep, but he’s at his best when paired with directors with strong creative visions. Meanwhile, the Disney gig also seems like a step up for Wright, who co-wrote The Adventures of Tintin and is attached to Ant-Man but has yet to shake off the specter of Scott Pilgrim . But assuming a decent writer is tapped to pen a script, and assuming Disney finds a way to sell it better than it has this season’s big budget pic John Carter , Night Stalker could give all involved a strategic career boost. Fingers crossed! • Disney Taps Edgar Wright To Helm Johnny Depp In ‘The Night Stalker’ Feature Redo [Deadline]

Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner Beasts of the Southern Wild Will Debut This June

Film lovers, take note: Benh Zeitlin’s highly lauded Sundance ’12 favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild is heading to theaters. Fox Searchlight, which acquired first time feature director Zeitlin’s pic out of the fest, will release the film in limited release on June 29; hit the jump for a full synopsis and peek at the festival award winner. The bayou-set film was the indie discovery to come out of Park City this year, and earned the fest’s Grand Jury Prize for drama. The magical realism-flavored drama should make for great counter-programming during blockbuster season — at least, you can be sure Fox Searchlight’s hoping so. The synopsis: In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions. Below: From Sundance, a meet-the-filmmakers vid with Zeitlin describing his project and young star, Quvenzhané Wallis. Expect an official trailer to come from Fox.
