Kick-Ass Sequel ‘Keeps Standard’ of the First: Aaron Johnson

The Kick-Ass sequel was a forgone conclusion but speculation mounted on when it would occur and if its stars including Aaron Johnson would take part. But all turned out fine and Jeff Wadlow will direct from his script, a follow up to the original that debuted at SXSW back in 2010 that went on to gross $103M at the box office worldwide. That’s a lot of ass-kicking! Star Aaron Johnson told Collider that he’s seen the script and it shouldn’t disappoint. “It’s pretty much set to go this fall,” he said. “I think now [Chloe Grace Moretz] and [Christopher Mintz-Plasse] are on board. I’m certainly set up to do it…Yeah, I think it’s going to happen.” Asked about the script, Johnson assures that the new version will keep the faith. “Oh, yeah! It keeps the standard from the first film.” Continuing, Johnson adds about creator Matthew Vaughn: “The only way he was ever going to make a sequel was if it could be anywhere close to the first one, and keep that class and that quality, and just maintain something original and new and refreshing.  And this script delivers all of that, right now.” [ Collider ]

Friday Box Office: X-Men: First Class Earns Top Marks

On Friday, July 14, 2000 , Bryan Singer’s X-Men earned $20.7 million at the box office, on the way toward an opening weekend of $54 million. Just shy of eleven years later, Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class earned $21 million on Friday night, and should be on course for an opening frame totaling $53 million. Symmetry! Elsewhere, The Hangover Part II dropped 65 percent from Friday to Friday, but the record-breaking sequel still earned $11 million last night. That kind of scratch buys plenty of smoking monkeys . Your Friday box office is here.

Kevin Bacon Cast as X-Men: First Class Baddie?

If it weren’t for X-Men: First Class casting news , would there be anything to write about? Kevin Bacon is reportedly in talks to star in Matthew Vaughn’s rapidly filling up X-Men prequel as the main villain. Because in the prequel Magneto (Matthew Fassbender) isn’t all bad and, as a result, someone needs to bite the dust before the credits roll. Or something. If a deal is worked out, it would mean the comic adaptation would have its first major American performer on board and — even better — give a whole new generation of actors the chance to star in Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. ‘X-Men: First Class’ Close To Casting Alice Eve As Emma Frost

Rosamund Pike was also rumored to be up for the role. By Eric Ditzian Alice Eve Photo: Marc Stamas/Getty Images With “X-Men: First Class” set for a summer 2011 release date, we’re at a place in the film’s development when the casting rumors sprout like weeds in the cracks on Hollywood studio lots. Just a few weeks ago, Internet whispers had it that Rosamund Pike (“Surrogates”) was up for the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost. But now it seems Marvel has found its blond mind-reader: Alice Eve. The 24-year-old British actress had her breakout turn earlier this year in “She’s Out of My League” opposite Jay Baruchel and is now in negotiations to join the growing “X-Men” cast, according to Deadline Hollywood . MTV News’ requests for comment were not returned by Eve’s representatives as of press time. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”), “X-Men: First Class” has already lined up Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X and Benjamin Walker (“Flags of Our Fathers”) as Hank “Beast” McCoy. Eve becomes the second actress to play Frost onscreen, following Tahyna Tozzi’s turn as the character near the end of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” In Marvel comics, Frost was originally a villain named the White Queen, who joined up with the X-Men and became a teacher at their school for mutant children. In addition to the “X-Men” casting news, Deadline also confirms that Tommy Lee Jones will be in “Captain America.” But now we know the specific role: Colonel Chester Phillips, the supervisor of the Super Solider program. Jones joins Chris Evans, who’s playing the captain, as well as Hugo Weaving, Neal McDonough and Stanley Tucci. The film is slated for a July 2011 release, just over a month after “X-Men” drops. Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Michael Fassbender Head of the Class?

It looks like Michael Fassbender’s supervillain Sophie’s Choice might be easier than expected . While he’s still presumably on the shortlist to play the villain in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, the German actor has been officially offered the role of Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class over at Twentieth Century Fox. If he accepts, Fassbender — next seen slicing throats in Centurion — would star alongside the previously announced James McAvoy, who plays Professor X in the film scheduled for release next summer. Marvel fatigue or not, that does sound pretty OK, right? [ Deadline ]
