Nick Cannon in White Face: Funny or Foul?

Ready to meet Connor Smallnut? To promote the upcoming album “White People Party Music,” Nick Cannon took to Instagram last night and posted as a character by this name. A white character by this name, we should say, joking to a follower on Twitter that it feels “great” to be this color because “I’m no longer afraid of the Police!! LOL.” However, after Vanity Fair Tweeted that Cannon’s stunt is “cringe” worthy, the America’s Got Talent host shot back: “Don’t get your fancy panties in a bunch! It’s funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!” Cannon then posted a picture of Robert Downey Jr. in black face in Tropic Thunder and wrote as a caption: “This is one of my favorite characters of all time! Hilarious!!! There is a big difference between Humor and Hatred.” True. But remember when Julianne Hough went blackface for Halloween? She faced a torrent of criticism. White People Party Music, Cannon’s second studio album and his first in more than 10 years, drops on April 1. What do you think of his white face stunt?   Hilarious! Inappropriate! Who cares?!? Tate Taylor will be directing. Taylor directed The Help previously. Co-producer Brian Grazer told Rolling Stone, “I like to make movies about mastery and genius, and it’s hard to find great subjects. And James Brown is a visually dynamic subject.” Will you be buying your popcorn and tickets?

Clapback: Brandon T. Jackson Says He Was Not Slizzard On Plane, Still Claims Flight Attendant Called Him The N-Word

Brandon is putting US Airways in their place. Brandon T. Jackson Says He Was Not Drunk During Flight US Airways needs to chill with trying to make Brandon the villain…they’re going to fawk up and walk right into a lawsuit. According to TMZ: Brandon T. Jackson says 13 people on his US Airways flight will back up his story that a flight attendant hurled the “N” word at him and made another racial comment. Brandon’s rep tells TMZ … the incident Monday did not go down the way the airline claims. The rep says he was NOT drunk, NOT loud, and NOT disruptive. Here’s the way Brandon says it went … He was running lines for a script he had with some random passenger who was sitting next to him. The flight attendant then accused them of being too loud, but Brandon says the noisy ones were actually in the row in front of them. So the “Tropic Thunder” star claims he then went to the back of the plane for sandwiches, and the flight attendant confronted him, told him she didn’t care if he was Obama’s son and he needed to sit down. He also says she hurled an epithet, “seemingly in jest.” He claimed earlier she used the “N” word. Brandon says the flight attendant beat him to the punch and complained to the pilot and when they landed he was questioned by authorities, who determined he was NOT intoxicated as the airline claimed. Brandon says he has 13 passengers who waited around to back up his story. The airline tells us they stand by their story … Brandon was being a disorderly, drunken douchebag. Brandon has his 13 people. US Airways…where are yours?

True Or False: Was Actor Brandon T. Jackson Kicked Off US Airways Plane After Being Called The N-Word By Flight Attendant?

Was Brandon T. Jackson subjected to racist treatment or was the US Airways flight attendant just doing her job? According to TMZ reports : “Tropic Thunder” star Brandon T. Jackson claims he was escorted off an airplane and questioned by police after flipping out on a flight attendant who called him the n-word. Jackson — who also plays Grover in the “Percy Jackson” movies — says he was on a US Airways flight when a flight attendant named Dee approached him and asked him to sit down. The two argued — and Jackson claims the flight attendant said, “I don”t care if you’re Obama’s son — get in your seat!!” Jackson says the flight attendant also called him the n-word. Jackson says he was later escorted off the plane — and questioned by police in Phoenix. Eventually, he was released and tweeted, “This was the most racist thing that ever happen to me even the white people on the plane was like that racist.” 10:14 AM PT — A rep for the Phoenix Police Dept. tells TMZ … cops received a call from the airline around 7:30 PM reporting a disruptive and belligerent passenger who had been cut off from alcohol. We’re told … when police arrived, officers spoke with Brandon and determined no crime had been committed. Brandon, who was supposed to catch a connecting flight to Burbank, was escorted out of the terminal and not allowed to fly on US Airways that night. Cops say Brandon was cooperative with police. SMH. Damn shame, even Hollywood stars aren’t safe from racism. Meanwhile US Airways is denying Jackson’s claims and trying to paint him as a drunk : “Tropic Thunder” star Brandon T. Jackson was an obnoxious, drunken a-hole during a flight Monday … and that’s why he was booted from his plane, so says US Airways. A rep for the airline tells TMZ … crew members adamantly deny using the N-word during an inflight altercation with the actor, despite the actor’s allegations. As we previously reported, Brandon went on a Twitter rant last night — claiming a flight attendant hurled racially-charged epithets at him for no reason … but now, the airline is calling BS. The rep explains, “The disruptive behavior started with loud music being played by Mr. Jackson at his seat. He was asked several times to turn down the music. Additional erratic behavior was observed and that is when the crew made the decision to stop serving [alcohol to Brandon].” US Airways says it stands behind the crew — claiming they handled the situation appropriately. When Jackson’s flight landed in Phoenix (where he was supposed to catch a connecting flight to Burbank) he was escorted off the plane and interviewed by Phoenix PD. Cops determined no crime was committed and he was allowed to leave — but US Airways banned him from getting on the plane to BUR. So far, no word back from Brandon T. Jackson. SMH. We have flown a lot of airlines in our time and have to say that US Airways is not among our faves. We’re definitely more inclined to believe Jackson than them… But what do you believe? Hit the flip to see his tweets.

Eddie Murphy Passes ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Torch To Brandon T. Jackson

Cue up the “Axel F”: Tropic Thunder actor Brandon T. Jackson has landed the lead in CBS’s Beverly Hills Cop reboot , which producers plan to bring back as a series for TV under the guidance of original star Eddie Murphy and The Shield ‘s Shawn Ryan. Murphy, who will executive produce and act in the series pilot, will reprise his role as the wisecracking, transplanted cop Axel Foley while Jackson will play Foley’s police officer son. Per Deadline : The series centers on Axel Foley’s blue-collar police officer son, Aaron (Jackson), who helps take down the criminal elements of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills while trying to escape the shadow of his larger-than-life father. Murphy will reprise his role as Axel in the pilot and may recur if the pilot goes to series. And look — Jackson’s already a part of the Beverly Hills Cop family! (Pictured below: Judge Reinhold and Jackson at Spike TV’s “Eddie Murphy: One Night Only” event earlier this month.) If this Beverly Hills Cop reboot business is happening, I’m glad it’s someone like Jackson, one of the more consistently hilarious actors of his class, getting the big shot. Because if there’s some other young up-and-comer fit to step into Murphy’s shoes, it’s probably Jackson. Also: Alpha Chino Forever. [via Deadline ]

Edgar Wright to Direct Johnny Depp in Night Stalker Remake

In what seems like a smart move for everyone involved, Disney has hired Edgar Wright ( Scott Pilgrim, Shaun of the Dead ) to direct Johnny Depp in The Night Stalker , a feature remake of the 1972 ABC made for TV movie of the same name and the series spin-off it inspired. The property follows reporter Carl Kolchak, whose investigations into criminal happenings lead him to all manner of supernatural villains; Depp will star as Kolchak, which sounds promising given Wright’s proven track record in genre work, even if it feels like similar stories have come and gone of late with nary a blip (the Vegas-set, vampire-themed Fright Night remake, for one). Despite the commercial disappointment of Scott Pilgrim (which nevertheless, it should be noted, went on to become a cult hit), the film demonstrated Wright’s strength of vision and knack for refreshing, energetic storytelling — qualities woefully lacking in Depp’s last few projects, with the exception of Rango . Even in the well-loved and storied character of Jack Sparrow in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean there was a glint sadly, noticeably missing from Depp’s eyes. Call it passion, or inspiration, or energy; Depp can pull off a starring turn in his sleep, but he’s at his best when paired with directors with strong creative visions. Meanwhile, the Disney gig also seems like a step up for Wright, who co-wrote The Adventures of Tintin and is attached to Ant-Man but has yet to shake off the specter of Scott Pilgrim . But assuming a decent writer is tapped to pen a script, and assuming Disney finds a way to sell it better than it has this season’s big budget pic John Carter , Night Stalker could give all involved a strategic career boost. Fingers crossed! • Disney Taps Edgar Wright To Helm Johnny Depp In ‘The Night Stalker’ Feature Redo [Deadline]

Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner Beasts of the Southern Wild Will Debut This June

Film lovers, take note: Benh Zeitlin’s highly lauded Sundance ’12 favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild is heading to theaters. Fox Searchlight, which acquired first time feature director Zeitlin’s pic out of the fest, will release the film in limited release on June 29; hit the jump for a full synopsis and peek at the festival award winner. The bayou-set film was the indie discovery to come out of Park City this year, and earned the fest’s Grand Jury Prize for drama. The magical realism-flavored drama should make for great counter-programming during blockbuster season — at least, you can be sure Fox Searchlight’s hoping so. The synopsis: In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions. Below: From Sundance, a meet-the-filmmakers vid with Zeitlin describing his project and young star, Quvenzhané Wallis. Expect an official trailer to come from Fox.

Excitement Over Accuracy = Key to Oscar-Nommed Sound of Drive

Drive sound editor Lon Bender, up for the Oscar against The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , Hugo , Transformers: Dark of the Moon , and War Horse , on director Nicolas Refn ‘s unusual sound requests: “In the sound world, there often is a propensity to want, at least for things like car chases, guns or weapons, to use sounds of the real weapons or the real cars. But when I went to Nic to talk about car engines and the specificity of the kind of cars they were, he said, ‘I don’t even have a driver’s license and I’ve never driven a car. I don’t care what they sound like! They just have to sound exciting.’” [ NYT ]
