Who SHOULD win? Read our take below and sound off with your own… BEST PICTURE Will Win: Argo . Should Win: Silver Linings Playbook . Many consider it too simple of a movie to win, but the performances are incredible and it’s simply entertainment at its finest. BEST DIRECTOR Will win: Steven Spielberg, Lincoln . Should win: Ang Lee, Life of Pi . Have you read that book? It’s uncanny this was turned into a coherent, enjoyable film. BEST ACTOR Will win: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln . Should win: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln . The clear favorite for a very good reason. BEST ACTRESS Will win: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty . Should win: Naomi Watts, The Impossible . A memorable performance in a truly harrowing tale, which is based on a very real, scary story. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Will win: Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook . Should win: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained . Come on. Who doesn’t adore this guy?!? BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Will win: Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables . Should win: Helen Hunt, The Sessions . Yes, Hathaway sang on song, really, really well. But give us Hunt’s more featured, layered performance in what we hope will be the evening’s biggest upset.

Breaking Dawn: Part 2 DOMINATES Razzies

The not-so-critically-below Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was the big “winner” at the 33rd annual Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies. The awards, given out the night before the 2013 Academy Awards , celebrate (or call out) Hollywood’s worst achievements of the cinematic year. Breaking Dawn Part 2 was recognized in seven categories, including worst picture. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew on that dubious honor!! Other Razzies racked up by the final Twilight Saga film: Worst sequel Bill Condon, worst director Kristen Stewart , worst actress Taylor Lautner , worst supporting actor Lautner and Mackenzie Foy, worst couple The entire cast, worst screen ensemble The film, of course, made $828 million at the box office and its big three stars are now world famous, so the Razzies can sort of suck it in that sense. Adam Sandler, who last year monopolized the Razzies with his “comedy” Jack & Jill , this year got only two awards for That’s My Boy . Progress, man! Rihanna, as worst supporting actress in Battleship , won by a landslide, while worst screenwriter Sandler beat the authors of Breaking Dawn by a single vote . Nothing like a true awards season nail-biter.

Talkback: Should ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part II’ Sweep The Razzies?

As terribly easy as it is to hate on the Twilight films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II was the best of the series. (Not that it was without its share of WTFery — imprinting and vampire fistfights and every second of Michael Sheen onscreen, anyone?) But with Breaking Dawn – Part II nominated for 11 Razzie Awards in just ten categories, up against the likes of Adam Sandler ‘s That’s My Boy , Eddie Murphy ‘s A Thousand Words , and the bizarro pop culture sensation / box office bomb The Oogieloves In Big Balloon Adventure , let’s be real: Does Twilight truly deserve to win all the Razzies? 2012 was rife with bigger targets for stinkbomb honors. Take the Worst Actor category, for example: Murphy’s turn in A Thousand Words as a man with a finite number of words to utter before death should give four-time nominee Robert Pattinson a run for his money, but Tyler Perry just might take it — and the Worst Actress prize, for which he’s also nominated for Madea’s Witness Protection . The pictures earning repeat scorn at the Razzies this year include blockbuster Battleship , which sucked Liam Neeson into the race to the bottom for his turn as a stern Navy officer and also earned Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker nods for their supporting work in the film. (If Decker doesn’t win, somebody get her a chicken burrito! Within five minutes!) It seems unfair to nominate performers who are playing themselves in obviously cheesy comedies, which is why David Hasselhoff in Piranha 3DD and Vanilla Ice in That’s My Boy cancel out of the Supporting Actor contest in my book. Meanwhile, the only nominee in this year’s crop who might actually take the Razzie honor as a warning sign to get a new agent is The Guilt Trip ‘s Barbra Streisand, who has been nominated thrice before — last year for Little Fockers , and three decades ago for 1981’s All Night Long and 1984’s Yentl . But let’s bring it back to the Worst Picture race. Battleship had its defenders, and Breaking Dawn – Part II was the best of the series. That’s My Boy scored worse the G-rated gyrations of Oogieloves on Rotten Tomatoes, but even Sandler shenanigans and dancing in the aisles to the sad sight and sound of C-list celebrities cashing paychecks didn’t hold a candle to the universally loathed A Thousand Words , which still stands at the elusive, ever-impressive 00 percent snake eyes on the Tomatometer. So which films and performances of 2012 really deserve that golden statuette? (Allow me to remind you what 00% on the Tomatometer looks like…) Full list of nominees: Worst Picture Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Director Sean Anders – That’s My Boy Peter Berg – Battleship Bill Condon – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Good Deeds / Madea’s Witness Protection John Putch – Atlas Shrugged: Part II Worst Actress Katherine Heigl – One for the Money Milla Jovovich – Resident Evil: Retribution Tyler Perry – Madea’s Witness Protection Kristen Stewart – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II / Snow White and the Huntsman Barbra Streisand – The Guilt Trip Worst Actor Nicolas Cage – Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance / Seeking Justice Eddie Murphy – A Thousand Words Robert Pattinson – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Alex Cross / Good Deeds Adam Sandler – That’s My Boy Worst Supporting Actress Jessica Biel – Playing For Keeps / Total Recall Brooklyn Decker – Battleship / What to Expect When You’re Expecting Ashley Greene – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Jennifer Lopez – What to Expect When You’re Expecting Rihanna – Battleship Worst Supporting Actor David Hasselhoff – Pirannha 3-DD Taylor Lautner – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Liam Neeson – Battleship / Wrath of the Titans Nick Swardson – That’s My Boy Vanilla Ice – That’s My Boy Worst Screen Ensemble Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy The Twilight Saga: Eclipsed Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screenplay Atlas Shrugged Part II Battleship That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance Pirannha 3-DD Red Dawn Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screen Couple Any two cast members from Jersy Shore in The Three Stooges Mackenzie Foy and Taylor Lautner in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry and his drag in Madea’s Witness Protection Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, or Susan Sarandon in That’s My Boy [via Indiewire ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Domestic Box Office Rises In Dollars And Audiences In 2012

Year on year, Hollywood’s box office receipts rise. And while the 2012 numbers came in higher than 2011, the year marked a specifically good turn for the movie industry: the number of actual tickets sold went up for the first time in three years. The year’s big numbers come despite a generally slow summer blockbuster season. The number of admissions have had a general decline for a decade, with the number of tickets sold flat lining in 2011 with 1.29 billion, which was the lowest number since 1995, according to A.P. Dollar amounts typically rise despite the decline of audiences numbers due to the rise in ticket prices. But for 2012, ticket sales rose 5.6 percent to 1.36 billion by December 31. The number is still significantly below the peak of 1.6 billion sold in 2002. On the overall revenue side, the domestic box office should top out 6 percent ahead of the $10.2 billion figure last year and also top Hollywood’s previous $10.6 billion record set in 2009. Leading the list of box office hits was Disney’s The Avengers with $623 million domestically ($1.5 billion worldwide) and Warner Bros.’ third Batman installment The Dark Knight Rises with $448 million domestically ($1.1 billion worldwide). Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games grossed over $408 million ($686.5 million) while Sony’s James Bond pic Skyfall reached nearly $280 million as of Sunday (and will likely surpass $1 billion this week); The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has a domestic total so far of nearly $282 million ($759.1 million worldwide); The Amazing Spider-Man topped out at just over $262 million in the U.S. ($752 million worldwide). Other big 2012 titles included Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted ($216 million) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($161 million). And Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has totaled $157 million domestically since opening December 14th in the U.S. While it’s good news for Hollywood, the future of the box office dollar continues to like overseas. International audiences used to amount to less than half of a typical release, but that figure has swelled to two or even three times dollars spent domestically. Even pics such as Battleship and John Carter which tanked in the U.S. came out decently overseas ($209.7 million abroad for John Carter and $237.6 million for Battleship ). The domestic market has also been hampered with the advent of ever-sophisticated home entertainment systems, portable devices and video games. Still, most agree the big screen experience with an audience is the best way to see a movie. “Every home has a kitchen, but you can’t get into a good restaurant on Saturday night,” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros told A.P. “People want to escape. That’s the nature of society. The adult population just is not going to sit home seven days a week, even though they have technology in their home that’s certainly an improvement over what it was 10 years ago. People want to get out of the house, and no matter what they throw in the face of theatrical exhibition, it continues to perform at a strong level.” [ Sources: A.P. , Box Office Mojo ]
