For decades, we assumed that the components of such complex systems as the cell, the society, or the Internet are randomly wired together. In the past decade, an avalanche of research has shown that many real networks, independent of their age, function, and scope, converge to similar architectures, a universality that allowed researchers from different Related posts: Why we don’t understand… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : [Geeks are Sexy] Discovery Date : 26/12/2011 01:00 Number of articles : 2

10 Things We Owe Our Children

A parent’s number one job is to love their child unconditionally; and, for most of us, that comes easily. Difficulties come with figuring out to how to best demonstrate our love and effectively communicate it to our children. Love is not an emotion but an action and children have to see their parent’s love at work. We are inclined to love our children in much the same way our parents loved us, good and bad. But, we only owe our seed the good as the goal is for every generation to get better. Love isn’t always gentle and it doesn’t always speak in a soft voice, but it is selfless and committed to generating positive outcomes. The act of love encompasses many things and it’s important to tackle areas of weakness individually. These are a few of the components we should focus on to help convey love to our children… Continued at MadameNoire.com

NBA All-Star Ron Artest Gives VMA Ticket Away To His Daughter

‘It’s all about her,’ he tells MTV News backstage, sitting outside Kanye West’s dressing room. By Shaheem Reid Ron Artest at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Right outside Kanye West ‘s dressing room — before his big performance at Sunday night’s (September 12) Video Music Awards — NBA All-Star and World Champion Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest was sitting down on the floor with his arms on his knees. When asked why he wasn’t sitting in a seat, Ron smiled a huge grin. “I gave my ticket to my daughter,” he told MTV News backstage . “She wanted to see the show. I didn’t get to see it. I let her go. It’s all about her.” While the VMAs were held at the Nokia Theatre, right next door to the Lakers’ home, the Staples Center, Ron Ron said he wasn’t interested in calling in any special favors. “Nah man, I’m good,” he laughed. Ron didn’t get to see any of the show and was very interested in how the proceedings were turning out. There was one MC in particular he wanted to know about. “Did Rick Ross perform?” Artest asked. When told that the Bawse didn’t rock the mic but instead had a special moment with VMA host Chelsea Handler, Ron frowned. “He didn’t do ‘B.M.F.’? Aw, man!” he protested. “They should have let him do that. He would have shut it down. ‘I think I’m Big Meech, Larry Hoover,’ ” Artest rapped, quoting Ross’ “Blowin’ Money Fast” lyrics. Ron did get a chance to see some of the show. He rolled with the G.O.O.D. Music crew to the house to see Kanye West and Pusha T debut “Runaway.” Ron stood with Big Sean and some of ‘Ye’s crew as the Louis Vuitton Don rocked the night. What was your favorite VMA moment? Nicki Minaj Has ‘Swag’ Like Lady Gaga, Choreographer Says

Laurie Ann Gibson says Minaj has ‘the components that I saw about three years ago in Lady Gaga.’ By Kelley L. Carter Nicki Minaj at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images Could Nicki Minaj be the next Lady Gaga ? Laurie Ann Gibson certainly thinks so. Choreographer extraordinaire Gibson worked with Gaga to create the dance chemistry in Gaga’s MTV Video Music Award-winning “Bad Romance” video and also put together Minaj’s VMA pre-show dance routine for her song “Check It Out,” with will.i.am. Minaj, who was dressed in a pink-and-purple spacesuit and coiffed with a cotton-candy-colored wig, impressed her live audience with her dance moves. Accompanied by two dancers in matching outfits, Minaj stood stock-still like a futuristic superhero for the song’s intro before wiggling her hips into the Gibson choreographed moves. Gibson, who MTV viewers will remember from Sean (Diddy) Combs’ “Making the Band,” told MTV News that Minaj has the makings of a superstar. “What I love about Nicki is she has the eye of the tiger and she is fearless,” Gibson said. “These are the components that I saw about three years ago in Lady Gaga. I thought, ‘This is going to be fantastic.’ Her swag is amazing.” And just what was that robotic movement we saw Minaj do during her performance? “The idea is that we’re Barbies landing from outer space,” Gibson explained. “It’s doll-like. It’s amazing.” Gibson is working on a reality show with Ryan Seacrest that will feature her life as a creative director and choreographer. She says the show will appear on E! sometime in the near future, and it will follow her climb to become a female version of Combs, her mentor and collaborator. Lindsay Lohan’s Bullshit Modeling of the Day

I don’t really know where Lohan found all the time to get all these modeling jobs she’s been popping up in lately, but I am pretty sure it happened before her week spent in prison. I guess this is one of the components to her revamping her image, you know a long with staging a prison sentence and rehab, all in efforts to get back on track in the role of her lifetime as the struggling pornstar Linda Lovelace, that will land her an Academy award, since she’s a household name that has reclaimed having people talk about her in recent weeks, and now this flow of pictures she took is the follow up material to keep the publicity train on track, so that people post the shit, talk about the shit, help her sell leggings, but most importantly start to make people care about her again, so that when all is said and done, she’ll be on top of her game again, when really she should be on top of dick in video, cuz that’s really what people care to watch, see, and appreciate when it comes to Lindsay Lohan….the broken Disney starlet with family issues and addictions is boring if there’s no hardcore porn clips to back it up…but this is as good as it gets today…but I know more will come in cuz otherwise the whole prison tactic was a waste of fucking time….

Man Builds Homemade Nuclear Fusion Reactor in Brooklyn

Need a weekend project around the house? Mark Suppes, web developer by day, has built his own nuclear fusion reactor in a Brooklyn workspace. It kind of makes that project car you’ve got rusting in the garage seem lame by comparison. Suppes' reactor – it’s about the size of an air conditioning unit with some extra bells and whistles attached – isn’t the answer to the world’s energy problems, at least not yet. He joins a list of 37 others recognized by the online community Fusor.net as having achieved homemade fusion (among them is a 15-year-old in Michigan). But his reactor is unique in the sense that it sits smack in America’s most densely populated city, and one in which the very word “nuclear” causes discomfort. But rest easy, Brooklynites. Reactors of this kind are both legal and safe. It uses no fissile materials like uranium or plutonium that are associated with nuclear weapons, and it produces no pollution or other byproduct, other than heat. Suppes' reactor uses deuterium gas to fuel his reactor, which essentially creates an ideal atmosphere for fusion before mashing neutrons together at high energy. While all the components of Suppes' machine – including the deuterium gas – were acquired through legal channels, some of it is somewhat dangerous. His power supply provides 30,000 volts, and his reactor does put off a negligible amount of radiation as it smashes neutrons together. Suppes' reactor does not generate any more power than he puts into it, and as such is not the golden fusion generator scientists hope will fuel the future with clean, cheap energy. But at some point Suppes hopes to go much bigger, attracting the funding to build what’s known as a Bussard reactor that will break-even when it comes to energy input and output. http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-06/deuterium-diy-man-builds-homemade-… added by: pjacobs51

New Phrase of Sustainability

I was watching the Discovery Green channel the other night and I learned a new phrase: “cradle to cradle.” In the show, the girl was describing her new faux granite counter tops. Cradle to Cradle means that the product is made from either recycled synthetic material or renewable organic materials and can be recycled again when you are through with them or will decompose naturally. It is a term coined by environmental pioneer William McDonough. The counter tops she was using were made from concrete and glass. They were very pretty, durable, stain resistant, and eco-friendly. In my environmental business class we read a book by Paul Hawken called “The Ecology of Commerce.” He discusses this theory as a business model to reduce waste. If more companies created products that they could reuse all of the components of, it would save them money in manufacturing and it would save us money in garbage disposal and environmental clean-up. I was thinking about this in terms of home building. What materials are truly cradle to cradle? The counter tops are a start, but what about insulation, siding, roofing, and other key components of a house? That’s when I found this Seattle-based competition to build sustainable homes that have materials that can be re-used when the house has reached the end of its lifecycle. Not only is the winning design an eco-friendly accomplishment, it is also gorgeous! However, it doesn’t say anywhere on there how much these technologies cost. So I wonder if it is affordable, or considerably more than normal, or if it pays itself off quickly?
