Yes, the numbers for season 4, episode 8 of Game of Thrones are in, and the wildly popular series has officially surpassed The Sopranos as the most-watched series in HBO’s history. For its peak episode in 2002 The Sopranos drew in an audience of 18.2 million viewers. GoT beat that number for the first time last week with 18.4 million tuning in. Prior to the acclaimed mob series that launched in 1999, no premium cable program had ever amassed an audience close to that size. To put things in perspective, the much-ballyhooed Breaking Bad finale of last year drew a meager-by-comparison 10.4 million viewers and that aired on a network that doesn’t require a paid subscription. It’s a well-deserved honor for a show in the midst of what many critics consider its finest season to date. Of course, last week’s increase in viewership may have had something to do with episode eight’s much-anticipated Oberyn Martell vs. Gregor Clegane battle , but considering the writers left us with a cliffhanger, much of the record-breaking audience may hold on to see if the powers that be will carry out the execution of Tyrion Lannister on this week’s GoT. It’s a possibility that’s already inspired some epic memes: Whatever happens, the remaining two episodes of season 4 are sure to pack plenty surprises and continue to enjoy unprecedented popularity. In a rampage police are describing as “premeditated mass murder,” seven people were killed last night when a young man opened fire from a slow-moving vehicle in Isla Vista near the University of California-Santa Barbara. Seven others are being treated for injuries at a local hospital. Among those dead is the suspected shooter, a 22-year old named Elliot Rodger. According to Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover, authorities have “obtained and [are] currently analyzing written and video evidence” from Rodger that suggests this horror had been planned as an act of revenge. The video in question is titled “Retribution” and it was posted by Rodger hours before his alleged actions. The clip describes Rodger’s anger over girls not finding him attractive and how he plans to make everyone pay. It’s frightening, disturbing stuff: Elliot Rodger Retribution Video Rodger is the son of Peter Rodger, the second unit director of the The Hunger Games . He died at the scene of a gunshot to the head, although it remains unclear whether or not the wound was self-inflicted.

Typically it’s the female nudity on Game of Thrones that gets the most attention, but after taking it all off to get down with the Khaleesi on Sunday night’s episode, actor Michiel Huisman is getting plenty of notice…and offers. Huisman is a new addition to the series and while he may not be the world’s second-strongest man like Hafpor Bjornsson , when he dropped his pants for Emilia Clarke, certain segments of GoT’s audience took notice. Some even broke out their checkbooks. “We saw the episode and we recognized this is a well-known actor who’s very, very good-looking,” says Playgirl publisher Vincent Stevens. “We understand why viewers felt short-changed only getting to see his butt,” Stevens adds, presumably keeping a straight face while using the word “butt” in a business conversation. “We thought if there was an opportunity to reach out to him, out readers would be interested.” No word yet on what kind of cash the magazine offered Huisman. Stevens cautions that negotiations are “still in the early stages,” but adds that he’s hopeful they’ll be able to make a deal with the Khaleesi’s new beau. “We know there’s an audience for it,” says Stevens. We’re sure there is.
