Death Cab For Cutie To Shoot Single-Take Video Live On The Web

‘You Are a Tourist’ clip will air live at 7 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Matt Elias Death Cab For Cutie Photo: MTV News On Monday afternoon, Death Cab for Cutie were holed up in a Hollywood soundstage rehearsing for an exceptionally ambitious music video project. The band plans to shoot a music video for their single “You Are a Tourist” in one take while being simulcast to the Web. And while single-take videos are nothing new (OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” and Feist’s “1234” come to mind), they’ve had the luxury of shooting multiple takes until they got it right. With “You Are a Tourist,” Death Cab have one chance to do it, and they’re doing it live. Adding to the difficulty, the band has mapped out a complex arrangement of moves and visual effects — but describing the video’s treatment might be the trickiest part of it all. “It’s kind of hard to describe because it’s kind of like … I liken it to a 5-year-old trying to explain their trip to Disneyland,” frontman Ben Gibbard said. “It’s sensory overload, so there’s a lot of things happening, and trying to kind of walk anybody through it would be very difficult. But there are lights and dancers, and smoke and projections, and it’s gonna be kind of a little bit of a Busby Berkeley -type of spectacle.” And a spectacle it is. Joining the band are a bevy of background actors and a troop of a dozen or so dancers, and just about as many computers controlling the action. The entire set glows with a series of projections (an abstract cityscape, geometric designs and triangles that flicker in sync with the music). Oh, and the band’s suits light up in sync with the song too. But despite the entire performance being highly intricate, the foursome seemed pretty relaxed during rehearsal. As Ben pointed out, “I think the trick here, or the balance here, is to try to have there be a legitimate amount of choreography involved, but not so much that if one thing goes wrong, the whole thing topples like a house of cards. And there are some very, kind of, tight moves throughout the video, but nothing that, you know, if I’m not standing here at this one point, the Rube Goldberg kind of thing falls apart and you’re standing there for the next three minutes looking like a moron.” You can catch the video in all its live glory Tuesday (April 5) at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on MTV.com , VH1.com and YouAreATourist.com . As Obama Bizarrely Walks Away From Presser, AP’s Feller Waxes Nostalgic on How ‘Clinton Commands Stage’

Not that he legitimately deserves our pity, but imagine the difficulty of being Ben Feller at the Associated Press yesterday. You've just attended a suddenly announced joint press conference with President Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton to announce the latter's support for the former's tax- and spending-related legislative proposals worked out with Republicans. You witness the astonishing spectacle of the current Commander In Chief leaving his own presser to be with his wife at a Christmas party, followed by the former CIC acting as if he never left, holding forth on all kinds of things beyond the presser's original intention. How do you frame this positively while the rest of the nation — left , far left , and right — gasps in utter amazment? In an excerpt which only begins to reveal the depth of Feller's feckless fawning, shows us how (especially over the top phrasing is bolded): read more

Audrina Patridge Gets To Play ‘Dress-Up’ On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

‘I’m definitely involved in the design, the colors, textures, cuts,’ former ‘Hills’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Tony Dovolani and Audrina Patridge Photo: ABC If her enthusiastic Twitter feed is any indication, Audrina Patridge and partner Tony Dovolani (also an avid tweeter ) are ready to wow their fans on the “Dancing With the Stars” season premiere Monday night (September 20). When we caught up with the former “Hills” star recently, she told us that, aside from all her sore muscles, she was having a blast getting to know her partner and all his dance techniques. “He is amazing,” she said. “He’s such a great teacher. He’s very professional, and we have a lot of fun together. It’s really fun. I look forward to going to rehearsal every day.” Regarding the challenges she’s faced in learning so many new steps and routines, we wondered whether having to dance in high heels adds to the difficulty. “It’s not that bad, because I’m used to wearing 5- or 6-inch heels,” the stiletto-sporting Patridge said. “The ballroom heels are actually 2 or 2 and a half inches [high]. I had to get to that height, because I’m used to really high heels, so it’s not bad at all.” In addition to Patridge’s fancy footwork, one more thing to pay attention to when you tune into the show’s premiere are her flashy costumes, which she had a hand in designing. “All the costume designers are really good,” Patridge said. “I’m giving them tear sheets and different ideas that I like to inspire each costume, but it really depends on your body and what looks good on each person. I’m definitely involved in the design, the colors, textures, cuts and this and that, so it’s really fun.” When asked if she had a favorite costume yet, complete with the famously flashy ballroom dance accessories — i.e., feathers, sequins and ruffles — Patridge hadn’t decided. “I don’t know yet, because each dance is so different, so it requires a different costume,” she said. “Whether ruffles or fringe, I can’t say, but I love everything. It’s like playing dress-up.” Will you watch Audrina and Tony on “Dancing With the Stars”? Have you picked a favorite couple yet? Let us know in the comments!
