Iran Planning Its Alterna-‘Argo’

Argo received eight Oscar nominations and has grossed over $166.4 million at the box office worldwide and now Iran wants in on the action. But don’t expect the Islamic Republic to toe the line of how events transpired in the version directed and starring Ben Affleck . [ Related: Iran A Possible Oscar No-Show After Boycott Threat AND Ben Affleck Goes For Gracious Post-Oscar Passover ] Iranian director Ataollah Salmanian an Iranian news agency that he is making a counter-feature to Affleck’s film which is based on the true story of a C.I.A. plan to rescue six Americans from Tehran during the outset of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Titled The General Staff , Salmanian told the news agency his film “should be an appropriate response to the ‘a-historic’ film Argo ,” according to BBC. Not surprisingly, Argo has ruffled feathers in the Iranian hierarchy and Salmanian is hoping to receive funding from the Middle Eastern country’s government. Iran has long had a contentious relationship with its filmmaking community even as its filmmakers won awards around the world. Last year Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language film. Despite praise for the win at the time, the country’s establishment banned its filmmakers from submitting to the Oscars race officially due to the controversy surrounding the anti-Islam video that hit YouTube last year, Innocence of Muslims . Others have faced persecution and silence including celebrated director Jafar Panahi who served house arrest and later prison. The director documented his house-arrest in This Is Not a Film , which was smuggled out of Iran in a Flash-Drive and hidden inside a cake. It later screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and other festivals. [ Source: The Guardian ] Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Happy Birthday Chace Crawford and Nelson Mandela!

A CW star and former South African President both celebrate birthdays today. First, Chace Crawford – who just started shooting Gossip Girl Season 6 – turns 27, as fans don’t need to worry about gifting him with anyone aside from their best wishes. He’s rumored to be dating Erin Andrews , after all. The actor doesn’t need anything else in life. Nelson Mandela, meanwhile, turns 94. The activist spent 27 years in prison and eventually helped turn his nation into a democracy, defeating the evils of apartheid along the way. That’s almost as impressive an achievement as the whole Andrews thing for Crawford. Other stars celebrating birthdays today include: Kristen Bell (32), Vin Diesel (45), Richard Branson (62).

Finding Nemo Sequel: Confirmed for 2016!

Film fans will be asked to track down their favorite little fish again in 2016, as Pixar has announced plans for a Finding Nemo sequel. The follow-up to the 2003 blockbuster – which took in $867 million worldwide and will be released again in 3D this September – has been confirmed by director Andrew Stanton, who will once again go behind the camera for the animated flick. Finding Nemo remains the second-highest grossing movie in Pixar history behind Toy Story 3 and is the fifth-highest grossing animated feature of all-time behind that one, The Lion King , Shrek 2 and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs . It’s unclear at the moment whether actors such as Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres will reprise their voice roles in the sequel, but the important thing here is that we all take Dory’s advice to heart: Just keep swimming, people.

Can This 76-Million-Year-Old Species Survive… Us?

The Hispaniolan Solenodon may look a bit strange for a modern mammal, what with its long snout, hairless legs, and rat-like tail, but considering how long they’ve been around, it’s no wonder why their look is not in vogue. Solenodons, it turns out, are one of the oldest surviving mammals on the planet, with a lineage dating back some 76 million years ago–and they’ve been through a lot. Having survived the same asteroid impact which killed the dinosaurs, as well as millions of years worth of temperature extremes, the hearty creature now finds itself

Rachel Maddow Covers Gulf Oil Spill… From 1979 By Alex Weprin on May 27, 2010 09:12 AM In one of the more interesting cable news reports about the gulf oil spill, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow busted out some footage from the NBC archives. Maddow broadcast reports from an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, caused when an oil rig exploded. Except that the reports were from 1979, not 2010. Amazingly, the techniques currently being used to try and cap the leak appear to be exactly the same as the ones used over 30 years ago. The only difference are some subtle (and funny) name changes. What BP called the “top hat” containment effort earlier this month, was called the “sombrero” back in '79.
