The Real MVP: Questlove Clarifies Why He Declined Participating In ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Docuseries

Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Questlove Explains His Decision To Not Be In R. Kelly Doc Questlove  is doing his part to send a clear message: He is not trying to protect R. Kelly and he never has. The Roots member is facing some mild backlash this week for declining to appear in  Surviving R. Kelly —the Lifetime docuseries centered on Kelly’s sexual abuse allegations. Executive producer and showrunner, Dream Hampton, recently told  Shadow and Act  that a number of prominent artists had turned down interviews for six-part series–which is why so many people praised John Legend for his participation. Hampton  previously elaborated saying her team reached out to celebrities who had either collaborated with the disgraced R&B star or who were critical of him. “John Legend was the only one [who participated],” she told  Shadow and Act . “I asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle […] I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it. I remember Ahmir [“Questlove” Thompson] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.” Fans were quick to jump on social media,  immediately expressing their disappointment in celebrities and their noncooperation–of course including Questlove. While it’s safe to assume that some of these musicians or former collaborators declined to be in the doc because they support Kelly, Quest insists that is not the case. “I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius,’” Questlove wrote in a now-deleted Twitter. “I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him” He continued on to say, “Just wanna make that abundantly clear in a non ‘he doth protest too much’ way. That quote makes it look like I’m protecting him. I’m thinking ‘damn I don’t wanna be the one guy I always am in documentaries fawning over someone I detest.’ So make ZERO mistake on my positioning.” Questlove deleted his tweets shortly after Hampton responded, where she insists she didn’t ask the Roots percussionist to talk about R. Kelly’s musical prowess. She quoted Quest’s tweet responding, “I didn’t ask you about his “Genius.” I’ve never thought he was a genius. I asked you to come on camera and say the same thing you said on Twitter. I told you I need Blake male allies.” Though the stories here don’t seem to add up completely, it seems like Questlove was taking his precautions since he usually takes the role of “talking about (insert name here’s) musical genius” and didn’t want to come off the same way in this instance.

‘Black August’ Screening Draws Chris Rock, Talib Kweli, More

Veteran journalist Dream Hampton spotlights benefit concert for political prisoners. By Jayson Rodriguez Talib Kweli (file) Photo: Al Pereira/WireImage NEW YORK — Chris Rock, Talib Kweli and Dead Prez’s M-1 were among the attendees of veteran journalist Dream Hampton’s screening Thursday night for her documentary “Black August: A Hip-Hop Benefit Concert.” The event, held at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, showcased the yearly tribute concert that has hosted performers such as Erykah Badu , Mos Def, Common, Dead Prez and David Banner in New York and South Africa. In her film , Hampton features concert footage and interviews with a slew of activists. The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in Brooklyn powers the concerts each year, and in her doc, Hampton seeks to spotlight issues like police brutality and racial injustice. The concert series and the film seek to address awareness about political prisoners, including Mutulu Shakur, the stepfather of late rap star Tupac Shakur. “I think the cause of political prisoners in the hip-hop community wouldn’t be as relevant in the hip-hop community as it is if it wasn’t for [the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement],” Kweli says in the film. “And it certainly has a long way to go from 10 years ago, and I think it’s more relevant. The bridges that we build in South Africa and Cuba are important. Every year, the show is bigger and better and grander.” Hampton, who has written about hip-hop and culture for The Source and Vibe magazines, among other publications, has labored over the project for years and is finally set to release the project by the end of the year. The event was sponsored by ImageNation and hosted by M-1. Are you looking forward to the Black August film? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Talib Kweli

Jay-Z To Discuss ‘Decoded’ Memoir At New York Public Library

Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards will also speak about his memoir, “Life,” this fall. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Keith Richards Photo: Getty Images Jay-Z is releasing his memoir “Decoded” this fall, but the superstar lyricist will have to keep things quiet during one of his upcoming public appearances. The Brooklyn MC is slated to speak at the New York Public Library on November 15. Jigga will chat about “Decoded” as part of the “Live From the NYPL” fall series, which also features literary stars such as Toni Morrison and Zadie Smith. The library appears to be down with making some noise next season, as Jay-Z isn’t the only musical artist hitting the library: Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards will also dish about his upcoming tome, “Life,” on October 29. “We’re very excited to reveal to the public a different side of their personality — the literary side!” a rep for the library told MTV News. “Decoded,” which is scheduled to hit shelves the same month as his library appearance, is a memoir punched up by insightful explorations of Jay’s hard-hitting rhymes. The book was penned in collaboration with journalist Dream Hampton and delves into his steady rise from pushing product on the streets of Brooklyn to stacking hits as one of the most revered lyricists in the game. The publication of “Decoded” will cap a long period in which the MC’s autobiography remained in literary limbo. Hov and Hampton had initially begun work on “The Black Book” in 2003, which was set to be released in 2004 via a deal with MTV Books/ Pocket Books. Hov pulled the plug on the project in 2005. In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Jigga admitted that “Decoded,” which is now being published by Speigel & Grau , has been completed for years. The MC revealed that his hesitance to release the project stemmed from the personal nature of the subject matter, much of which Hov was confronting for the first time. “It’s too much. For the book, I was interviewed, people close to me were interviewed. So I was learning a lot of things I didn’t know as a child,” Jay-Z said. “It’s not anything I haven’t said in the past, in songs. It’s just more detailed. A song is three minutes long. A book doesn’t have to rhyme, and it has no time limit, so you can say exactly how everything went.” What do you think Jay-Z will discuss in his upcoming memoir? Let us know in the comments below!
