So Maxim just released their Hot List for 2015, and as you can see, they went with Taylor Swift at #1. And don’t get me wrong, I like Taylor as much as the next leg-obsessed pervert, but still, when I think of the hottest woman in the world, I think of someone like Xenia Deli or Julia Pereira or last year’s #1 Candice Swanepoel . I just think there’s more Taylor should have to do before she gets to the top spot, like giving us more than one bikini picture . Or having a high-profile fling with a certain blogger. It’s all about paying your dues. Continue reading →
‘I hadn’t paid my dues to music, and so I went and started studying theory,’ Wu-Tang beatmaker tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy RZA Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: RZA RZA can chop a sample with the best of them. The chief Wu-Tang producer has flipped samples from Isaac Hayes and Gladys Knight to make classic hip-hop records like “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Can It Be All So Simple,” but it was a random encounter while buying music equipment that changed the Abbot’s entire perspective on sampling music. “The first thing happened was that I was at a music store buying equipment,” RZA told Mixtape Daily. “I went platinum, I became a millionaire, I was probably feeling myself egotistically, going to Sam Ash to buy a whole bunch of equipment, and a regular musician stopped me because people were giving me attention, ‘That’s RZA, that’s RZA.’ And this guy said, ‘You’re ruining music.’ ” Of course, a young RZA was taken aback at first. “He’s a musician, but because of sampling, he can’t get a job. Because of drum machines, his drummer can’t get no work. He said, ‘You’re not a real musician.’ I said, ‘What you mean I’m not a real musician? I got a platinum album.’ He said, ‘You’re not a real musician. You don’t know nothing about music.’ ” It was at that point that RZA’s outlook began to change. “He was right. I couldn’t tell him what a C note was. So he challenged me, basically,” he said. Feeling inspired, the Wu-beat banger started to study music theory and began to craft sample-free tracks. That, coupled with multiple lawsuits that he faced for reworking compositions from others, led to RZA’s growth. “It’s unfair sometimes for us to have success on things when we haven’t paid our dues,” he said. “So even though I paid my dues to hip-hop, I hadn’t paid my dues to music, and so I went and started studying theory.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . In Middle Men , Laura Ramsey plays a woman who parlays an ignoble beginning (selling sex on the internet) into a lucrative business, and in some ways, it’s a fortuitous match of actress and character. Ramsey, too, paid her dues in productions she’d probably rather forget (like MTV’ s reality flop The Real Cancun ), but she’s since built a promising career as an actress, with notable appearances in projects like The Ruins, The Covenant , and Mad Men. She called up Movieline to talk about fake online profiles, and donning a sailor hat for Sofia Coppola.
‘My grandfather paid his dues for that nickname,’ Carmine Agnello says of the late John Gotti. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rick Ross’ Teflon Don Photo: Def Jam After scoring several acquittals throughout the ’80s, reputed New York mobster John Gotti was nicknamed the “Teflon Don” because of his apparent inability to get convicted. Decades later, Miami MC Rick Ross has adopted the moniker for the title of his latest album; however, a member of Gotti’s family is not happy with the use of the late mob boss’ handle. “He should have asked for permission,” Gotti’s grandson Carmine Agnello told the New York Daily News. “A stand-up, respectable guy would come and ask, ‘If I could use the nickname.’ ” Agnello also implied that lifting the mob boss’ moniker was an unoriginal choice on Ross’ part. “I think he’s a great artist, but you can’t just start calling yourself that to sell records,” Agnello said. “He wants to go for that whole image, but hey, be yourself.” Agnello added, “My grandfather paid his dues for that nickname. That was my grandfather’s life.” Agnello also took a dig at Ross’ controversial pre-rap career as a prison guard and said, “Only in America can you go from being a corrections officer to calling yourself Teflon Don.” A rep for Ross did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Although the moniker is often associated with the headline-making mob honcho, Ross said the title has personal significance. “A lot of people don’t know Teflon Don was my original rap name,” Ross told MTV News in January . “So it’s coming back around full-circle.” While Agnello has taken issue with Ross’ adoption of the Teflon Don title, it’s not the first time the Miami MC has woven notorious gangster references into his hip-hop persona. Ross recently released the mixtape, The Albert Anastasia EP, the title of which is a nod to another New York mobster. Ross was also reportedly sued by the infamous drug pusher Ricky Ross for . Regardless of the accusations being lobbed the MC’s way, Ross has said that he’s trying to top his previous work with his latest effort. “Myself, I try to get better and better with every rhyme I make — every rhyme I bring to the table, I want to make sure it’s more potent than the last,” Ross said. “I’m setting this album, Teflon Don, to be the album of my career.” Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)
