Justin Bieber’s ‘Mistletoe’ Video Director Shares Set Secrets

From Justin’s iced-out grill to his offer to buy a Porsche, Roman White gives MTV News the behind-the-scenes scoop. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber in his “Mistletoe” video Photo: Island/Def Jam Roman White has directed videos for the likes of Seether, Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, but none of those projects prepared him for rather unique challenge of working with Justin Bieber , an artist who demands a certain level of secrecy. Then again, White has been down this path before (he directed the Biebs’ “One Less Lonely Girl” video in 2009). So when it came time for him to shoot the “Mistletoe” video, he was ready — and appropriately tight-lipped. “We were casting, and everything had to be very secretive, so we were literally casting these girls, we couldn’t tell them who it was, and we couldn’t tell them any of the stuff, because we were trying to keep this shoot as much under wraps as we could,” White told MTV News following the premiere of the “Mistletoe” video. “So this girl came out, her name is Allie Williams, and she was my number one pick from the minute she walked in. So I ended up casting her [as Bieber’s love interest], and we went and did the fitting, and I got permission from my producer. … I told her who it was, and she was really excited to be in it, to say the least.” As far as all that secrecy goes, judging by behind-the-scenes footage of the “Mistletoe” shoot, it was all for naught, as hundreds of Bieber fans showed up and squealed their way through the day. “It did not work out so well,” White said, laughing. “But it could’ve been worse!” White also revealed that his previous experience had prepared him for Bieber’s notorious on-set pranks. So when JB showed up sporting a seriously iced-out grill, the director wasn’t shocked. “We were about to start shooting the first scene, and he was walking around, and he had this grill in the bottom of his teeth. It was bedazzled like you wouldn’t believe,” White explained. “He kept walking by me and just smiling a little bit so I would see it. I think he was trying to stress me out, because he knew that I wasn’t really going to want him to wear this glittery grill on the bottom of his teeth. And finally, I was like, ‘We’re not going to wear that, are we?’ ” Now that the “Mistletoe” video has premiered, White let us in on a little secret: There’s a whole lot more riding on it than viewers might imagine — like the Porsche Speedster that Bieber drives in the clip. “When we were shooting the Porsche scene, and I told Justin, ‘We should just buy this car and split it,’ and he was like, ‘If this video wins an MTV Video Music Award, I’ll just buy you one,’ ” White said, laughing. “So I am starting the campaign right now … a Christmas video has probably never won anything, but it’s not about the award, it’s about the car.” Share your thoughts on the “Mistletoe” video in the comments below! No 50 Cent, You May Not Name Your Football Cancer Film After Africa’s Greatest Literary Work

Remember how rapper-filmmaker 50 Cent wrote, produced, and stars in a film about a football player who gets diagnosed with cancer ? The Mario van Peebles-directed flick was set to launch Fiddy into dramatic stardom under the title Things Fall Apart until reps for Nigerian author Chinua Achebe — who wrote a little book also called Things Fall Apart , practically the most famous African novel ever — contacted him with a copyright infringement complaint. 50 offered $1 million for use of the title, prompting Achebe’s camp to shoot back with a resounding rejection.

Tyrese Explains Michael Bay with Barking Dog Analogy

While accruing billions of dollars at the box office for his Transformers franchise, director Michael Bay has also gained somewhat of a reputation for his aggressive, dictatorial style of directing. Former Transformers star Megan Fox called Bay a nightmare who aspires “to be like Hitler on his sets.” Other Transformers actors have agreed, claiming that a day on a Transformers set is like a day on the battlefield with General Bay shouting commands for explosions, choppers, Blackhawks, appleboxes and instructions to ignore lunch. But is there a softer side to Michael Bay that the public does not know about?

Filmmaker Rod Lurie on Straw Dogs, His Critics and Sam Peckinpah: ‘I’m Certainly More Optimistic’

As soon as he took the reins on this week’s remake of Sam Peckinpah’s brutal 1971 classic Straw Dogs , writer-director Rod Lurie knew the haters would come in droves. “From the minute we announced it everybody was on my ass in the blogosphere, telling me that I couldn’t carry his jockstrap and I’ll never be Sam Peckinpah,” Lurie told Movieline on the eve of his film’s release. But with his updated take on the Peckinpah film, which transplants the violent tale to the American South and re-envisions protagonists David and Amy Sumner ( James Marsden and Kate Bosworth) as a Hollywood couple fighting off fire and brimstone-raised good ol’ boys, Lurie was never attempting to mimic Peckinpah at all — in fact, he was doing just the opposite.

Jonas Brothers Promise Old And New JoBros Hits On Summer Tour

‘I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music,’ Kevin teased. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — While the Jonas Brothers will be joined by Demi Lovato and a number of their “Camp Rock 2” pals for their big tour, which kicks off Saturday outside Chicago, the guys want their fans to know that this is still very much a JoBros tour. And fans will get a bonus treat, thanks to all the special guests. “When you’re coming in to see the show, I think from the minute you walk in to when the last note is played, it’ll be a full night of music and entertainment,” Kevin told MTV News during a break from rehearsals at the First Midland Bank Amphitheatre. “And we have so many friends out on the road and so many things to be able to integrate into our show.” But fans of Jonas hits like “Lovebug” and “SOS” shouldn’t fret; the guys have been making sure their own songs are getting plenty of airtime during the show. “We are doing a Jonas Brothers set, and it’s actually a lot,” Kevin added. He said fans will even be treated to some oldies but goodies. “We’re playing a lot of Jonas Brothers songs, and we’re integrating ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘JONAS L.A.’ songs [and] songs from our past. We’re really excited.” Not only should fans be excited to catch the JoBros and their pals onstage, but the show also means the guys have a lot more friends to hang out with on the road. “It’s been a lot of fun,” Joe said. “We had a great time shooting the movie with those guys, so to kind of be backstage, there’s a lot of people on this tour. It’s cool for us to hang out with them all the time.” Earlier that day at a news conference at the House of Blues , the guys said that if they did find any downtime at all, they had a few places they like to hang out in Chi-Town. “Millennium Park is always a lot of fun. On my tour back in January, I took a trip up there,” Nick said. “Also, just walking the riverfront is amazing. It’s such a beautiful city. The fans here are some of the best in the world, I think.” Will you be checking the Jonas Brothers out on tour? Let us know in the comments!
