Justin Bieber’s ‘Mistletoe’ Video Director Shares Set Secrets

From Justin’s iced-out grill to his offer to buy a Porsche, Roman White gives MTV News the behind-the-scenes scoop. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber in his “Mistletoe” video Photo: Island/Def Jam Roman White has directed videos for the likes of Seether, Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, but none of those projects prepared him for rather unique challenge of working with Justin Bieber , an artist who demands a certain level of secrecy. Then again, White has been down this path before (he directed the Biebs’ “One Less Lonely Girl” video in 2009). So when it came time for him to shoot the “Mistletoe” video, he was ready — and appropriately tight-lipped. “We were casting, and everything had to be very secretive, so we were literally casting these girls, we couldn’t tell them who it was, and we couldn’t tell them any of the stuff, because we were trying to keep this shoot as much under wraps as we could,” White told MTV News following the premiere of the “Mistletoe” video. “So this girl came out, her name is Allie Williams, and she was my number one pick from the minute she walked in. So I ended up casting her [as Bieber’s love interest], and we went and did the fitting, and I got permission from my producer. … I told her who it was, and she was really excited to be in it, to say the least.” As far as all that secrecy goes, judging by behind-the-scenes footage of the “Mistletoe” shoot, it was all for naught, as hundreds of Bieber fans showed up and squealed their way through the day. “It did not work out so well,” White said, laughing. “But it could’ve been worse!” White also revealed that his previous experience had prepared him for Bieber’s notorious on-set pranks. So when JB showed up sporting a seriously iced-out grill, the director wasn’t shocked. “We were about to start shooting the first scene, and he was walking around, and he had this grill in the bottom of his teeth. It was bedazzled like you wouldn’t believe,” White explained. “He kept walking by me and just smiling a little bit so I would see it. I think he was trying to stress me out, because he knew that I wasn’t really going to want him to wear this glittery grill on the bottom of his teeth. And finally, I was like, ‘We’re not going to wear that, are we?’ ” Now that the “Mistletoe” video has premiered, White let us in on a little secret: There’s a whole lot more riding on it than viewers might imagine — like the Porsche Speedster that Bieber drives in the clip. “When we were shooting the Porsche scene, and I told Justin, ‘We should just buy this car and split it,’ and he was like, ‘If this video wins an MTV Video Music Award, I’ll just buy you one,’ ” White said, laughing. “So I am starting the campaign right now … a Christmas video has probably never won anything, but it’s not about the award, it’s about the car.” Share your thoughts on the “Mistletoe” video in the comments below! Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Video Has Lots Of Time Travel

‘Time travel is horrible for the hair, but fun nonetheless,’ director Roman White jokes. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Taylor Swift in her music video for “Mine” Photo: Big Machine Records Fans got a taste of what they can expect in Taylor Swift’s video for her Speak Now single, “Mine.” So far, we know she meets a cute boy (Toby Hemingway) and falls in love with him, and the two endure the ups and downs of being in love. The video’s director, Roman White, said that the clip features a lot of time travel, which would explain how those two crazy kids end up with kids of their own in the end. “There’s a lot of time travel in this video, which is fun,” he told MTV News. “No DeLoreans [referring to the movie ‘Back to the Future’]! Time travel is horrible for the hair, but fun nonetheless … It’s evolving their family story.” What fans might find most interesting in the clip is seeing Swift in a wedding dress, images of which were leaked online earlier this summer when Swift shot the video in Maine. “On the second day, we shot a lot of the stuff,” White explained. “The second day with her and Toby, [we shot] them moving in together, all of their stuff, where they’re kind of living their life, them with their kids, them having their huge argument, kind of the moment at the end. We shot the wedding shot, which is very interesting … those were the pictures that leaked first, which was very odd.” What viewers will notice most is the undeniable chemistry between Swift and her leading man, British actor Toby Hemingway , who was handpicked by Swift to star in the video. “She had mentioned Toby, so we started looking into him. He’s a really great actor,” White said. “They worked really well on camera [and] it’s always fun having someone around who’s British. It just makes everything sound cooler. It definitely comes off like they were a family. He was great to work with.”

Taylor Swift Explored Dark Side For ‘You Belong With Me’ Video

‘Once she put on that wig, [the] real Taylor was gone,’ director Roman White recalls of VMA nominee. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Taylor Swift in her “You Belong With Me” music video Photo: Big Machine Records Taylor Swift got to show the world that she can be just as naughty as the next girl in her VMA-winning “You Belong With Me” video. We also learned that once she puts on a cheerleader costume and a long, dark wig, she becomes almost unrecognizable. “We did have a body double for Taylor, and it was not easy because of Taylor’s hair,” director Roman White explained. “Her hair is so specific, so we did have to have a body double to go back and forth when we did ‘evil cheerleader Taylor’ and ‘good girl Taylor.’ We really had to cheat it.” “It works really great,” he continued. “She looks very different with long, blonde hair.” And White explained it wasn’t just her look that was different in the disguise. “There was real Taylor and cheerleader Taylor, and once she put on that wig, real Taylor was gone,” White remembered. “I didn’t want to be around ‘cheerleader Taylor.’ ‘Cheerleader Taylor’ was a monster. Taylor, on the other hand: very nice, easy to work with.” The John Hughes-influenced video was meant to have “colors that pop” and a love story that was at the heart of the clip. “I really wanted there to be a great love story there,” White said. “It’s about these two people who have lived these two lives across from each other and both of them loved each other but just never knew it. They were just barely missing each other, across the way.” For Swift’s love interest, “Hannah Montana: The Movie” star Lucas Till was cast as the perfect boy next door. White revealed that sparks between the pair were evident to everyone on set. “How many kisses did we go through? I stopped counting at, like, 45,” he joked. “They were going for it, no? When you’re shooting this, you’re always looking for that perfect kiss, but as the director, it’s always weird for me to go, ‘OK — we need you to kiss a few more times.’ But they were very natural. … Not that they didn’t like each other, ’cause they did.” In fact, the pair did date for a short time after doing the video. And White could see why they’d be perfect for each other. “They’re both really, really kind. It sounds really cheesy, but they really are,” he said. “I think you can see it when they kiss. You can see that warmth and that kind of first-kiss moment. So we literally got to see their first kiss, and it worked.” What’s your favorite Taylor Swift video? Tell us in the comments! Taylor Swift Debuts Speak Now Cover Art

The ‘Mine’ singer dons a sparkly, princess gown for her latest album, due October 25. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift’s Speak Now Photo: Big Machine Records The countdown has begun. With a little less than two months until Taylor Swift releases her new album, Speak Now, fans can now get a peek at the album’s cover art. On Wednesday (August 18), Swift revealed what the October 25 LP will look like. The image shows Swift twirling in a sparkly, deep-purple gown. She completes the look with her signature curls and bright red lips. Fans are already loving Swift’s first single from the album, “Mine,” a country-tinged pop tune about the ups and downs of falling in love again after being hurt. The video for “Mine” is set to debut on August 27, with her “You Belong With Me” director, Roman White, onboard for this one too. And Swift is keeping up her track record of casting adorable male leads: In the latest, she’ll have the help of British import and “Black Swan” star Toby Hemingway. “I was doing some more research and watched another movie he was in called ‘The Covenant,’ ” she said about Hemingway. “I’ve got this crazy 13 lucky thing, and he walks onscreen for the first time wearing a sweatshirt with a 13 on it! That was the deciding factor. It wasn’t really up to me, it was about the number.” Swift will also perform the song during a CMA special next month. As for the album, Swift admitted she’s using her personal experiences as fodder for the tracks. “For me, I write everything that I live, so you got to give yourself a little bit of time to live a lot of things so you can write about a lot of things, and my only option is to write about what I’ve been through and what I’ve lived, so thankfully, in the past two years, I’ve experienced a lot of things that I’ve been dying to write about and a lot of things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn’t,” she explained.
