If you’re a Taylor Swift fan who uses the music streaming service Spotify, you may have found yourself disappointed this week. As you’ve likely heard, Taylor released 1989 on Monday and her highly-anticipated fifth studio album is on track to become the biggest seller of the year. Swift’s label, Big Machine Records, pulled all of her music from Spotify in preparation for 1989’s blockbuster sales. Spotify execs issued a statement saying that they’re fans of Taylor’s music and “hope that she changes her mind.” That seems unlikely. With a 1989 world tour coming up and promotional tie-ins with companies like Target and Coca-Cola, Taylor has been promoting 1989 harder than any of her previous albums. It seems clear that she considers the album to be some of her best work, and her fans seem to agree. So why not have them pay full price for it? Taylor’s been open about her feelings on online streaming services in the past: “Piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically,” she told the Wall Street Journal last year. “Every artist has handled this blow differently.” Taylor certainly isn’t the first artist to pull her music from Spotify. Beyonce and Coldplay are two of the growing number of major acts who have already cut ties with the service. 11 Fun Facts About Taylor Swift! 1.
