Hillary Clinton became the first woman to ever accept a major party's nomination for President of the United States on Thursday night. It was a big deal. And, today, yet many people on the Internet are talking about someone they had never heard of prior to the Democratic National Convention, as opposed to this Presidential hopeful. Did you catch the speech of Khizr Khan? Khan's son, Humayun, was a captain in the U.S. Army. When a vehicle packed with explosives approached his compound in Iraq in 2004, he told his men to take cover as he ran toward it. It exploded and killed Khan on the spot, earning him a posthumous Bronze Star. Fast forward 12 years later and Khizr Khan and his wife taking the stage in Philadelphia. During a moving speech toward the end of the DNC, Khan paid tribute to his child; gave credit to Hillary Clinton; and offered a stark, brave repudiation of Donald Trump. “We are honored to stand here as the parents of Capt. Humayun Khan, and as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to our country,” Khizr Khan said to a standing ovation. He spoke of his son's dreams of becoming a military attorney and how Clinton had referred to his son as “the best of America.” And then he went after Trump. “If it was up to Donald Trump, [Humayun] never would have been in America,” Khan said. “Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country.” He continued: “Donald Trum, you are asking Americans to trust you with our future. Let me ask you: Have you even read the U.S. Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy.” With those words, he pulled a copy of the Constitution from his pocket. “In this document, look for the words 'liberty' and 'equal protection of law,'” he said, once again to a raucous ovation. Earlier this month, Trump promised congressional Republicans that he would defend “Article XII” of the Constitution. There is no such Article. “Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?” Khan said. “Go look at the graves of the brave patriots who died defending America — you will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing. And no one.” Pretty powerful stuff. Watch the full speech below:
Katy Perry didn't need a colorful wig or revealing outfit to garner a lot of attention on Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention. The artist, who has been one of the most outspoken famous supporters of Hillary Clinton for months now, took to the stage in Philadelphia and first gave a brief, passionate speech. “Both my parents are pastors and staunch Republicans,” she said, adding: “I didn’t finish high school. Unfortunately, I don’t have a formal education, but I do have an open mind and I have a voice.” (NOTE: It's true about her parents. They aren't the biggest fans of their own daughter .) Perry continued: “I’m asking you to have an open mind, and to use your voice, because on November 8th, you’ll be just as powerful as any NRA lobbyist. “You’ll have as much say as any billionaire, or you can cancel out your weird cousin’s vote. “Here’s how I’m going to use my voice: I’m going to vote for Hillary Clinton. I love Hillary.” Perry and Clinton actually met up back during a book tour in 2014, with the beloved pop singer writing on Instagram afterward: “I told @hillaryclinton that I would write her a ‘theme’ song if she needs it…” Last year, Perry was there when Clinton celebrated her birthday, as the two teamed up for a campaign event in Iowa. On Thursday, meanwhile, Perry concluded her remarks and then performed in front of the thousands inside Wells Fargo Arena and the millions watching at home. She debuted the song “Rise” in public and she also broke into a rendition of her classic, “Roar.” Perry was just one of numerous of musicians to sing during the DNC this week. On Monday night, Demi Lovato gave a speech and performed at the convention on Monday, while Alicia Keys, Andra Day and Lenny Kravitz have all provided live entertainment as well. Nash Grier, a 16-year-old who is somehow the most followed person on Vine, is seen in this video yelling a gay slur. And we mean full-on yelling, angrily. It’s pretty shocking. The video, which he posted in April and quickly deleted, surfaced only after Tyler Oakley, another social media star, posted it online. The Vine clip features a TV commercial about HIV, in which several men seek to debunk the notion that the disease that leads to AIDS is “a gay thing.” Grier clearly does not agree with the message of the PSA: Nash Grier Gay Slur Play it yourself if you want to see exactly what he says. It’s not clear how Oakley got his hands on Nash Grier’s stunning Vine reaction to the HIV ad – whether he was kidding or not – and was appalled, blasting it out. TMZ then shared the clip as well. Grier, owner of some of the most-viewed snippets in the history of Vine as well as the most followers, has yet to address the controversy on his account. Celebrities Who Are Anti-Gay and Proud 1.
