It was probably just a matter of time before French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius broke through in the United States: His OSS 117 diptych of spy spoofs had already acquired something of an international audience, and his curiosity about Hollywood has grown alongside his reputation. But no one — least of all Hazanavicius himself — likely foresaw him breaking through with The Artist .

The Artist Leads HIFF Award Winners

Big ups to The Artist , the Oscar-contending silent-film throwback that took home the Audience Award at this weekend’s Hamptons International Film Festival. Michel Hazanavicius’s film led a class that also included the superb documentarian Marc Levin and breakout stars Emily Browning , Anton Yelchin and Alexander Skarsgård . Silent Cannes Favorite The Artist Gets Poster: The Golden Age of Black and White

Cannes crowd-pleaser The Artist — a black-and-white, silent (save the musical score) film about Hollywood in the ’20s — isn’t tampering with the poster that ushered in its success: The Weinstein Company is reusing the gorgeous shot that led to the movie’s best actor prize for Jean Dujardin. Michel Hazanavicius’s Gallic flick hits the states on Nov. 23. Can you handle the intense Clark Gable/Claudette Colbert throwback?

SNL Scorecard: Where the Hell Was Ed Helms?

It’s apparent that there are certain Saturday Night Live hosts whom the show really has no idea how to use — Elton John is a good example from earlier this season. Then there’s the strange case of Ed Helms: For whatever reason, the show decided to pretty much ignore the fact that Helms was host altogether.

CANNES REVIEW: Satiny Black-and-White Silent The Artist Emerges as a Palme d’Or Frontrunner

In a curious but pleasant development, a latecomer to the Cannes competition lineup, announced just a week before the festival began, has suddenly become a possible front-runner for the Palme d’Or. Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, a silent film shot in Hollywood in black-and-white, screened this morning, and its sly charms seemed to win over a sizable portion of the audience — including me.
