Ari Graynor on Lucky, Her Dramatic Plans, and Being a Funny Lady in Hollywood

Chances are you first laid eyes on former Verge designee Ari Graynor as a gum-snapping party girl in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist , the breakout role that put the 28-year-old actress on Hollywood’s radar back in 2008. Since then, she’s continued to steal scenes in films like Youth in Revolt , Whip It , and Holy Rollers , but as she prepares for another big comedic year ahead of her (plus a run on Broadway), Graynor’s ready to take her next big leap — right into leading lady territory for the first time — in the indie black comedy Lucky .

The Verge: Justin Bartha

For years, Justin Bartha’s been a dependable supporting player in comedies ( The Hangover ), tentpoles ( National Treasure ) and even misfires ( Gigli ), but his days of second fiddle may be coming to an end. In the new drama Holy Rollers , Bartha still plays support to Jesse Eisenberg, but through his role as the debauched Hasid who lures Eisenberg into a life of drug running, Bartha gives the movie its jittery intrigue. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old actor has the lead in Stanley Tucci’s Broadway musical Lend Me a Tenor , and though he was gone for most of the first Hangover , he’s due to have an expanded role in the second. Last week, Bartha spoke to Movieline about the perils of indie filmmaking, Eisenberg’s habit of self-deprecating, and the job he’d take on the next Hangover if director Todd Phillips asked him.

REVIEW: Holy Rollers Blinks in Its Glimpse at Unseen World

The Hasidic community is mysterious to outsiders, and for good reason. This isn’t a group that reaches out to strangers, preferring to keep themselves isolated in their own neighborhoods, where they can follow their own long-established mores and customs while avoiding dangerous distractions. We’re not supposed to look at them as if they’re time travelers from the 19th century, but seeing the men dressed uniformly in their somber, loose-fitting suits, the women in their ankle-grazing skirts and dark helmet-shaped wigs, it’s hard not to. These are people who don’t want the modern world to find them. How could outsiders — all of us swept up in the modern world whether we like it or not — not be curious about that?

Jesse Eisenberg on His New Films, Old Insecurities and Nice Guy David Fincher

It’s purely accidental that Jesse Eisenberg should have three movies opening in theaters in the next 10 days. Still, it’s all the reminder you need that the 26-year-old New Yorker is as in demand as virtually any young actor in the business. Coming off 2009’s mainstream tandem of Zombieland and Adventureland , Eisenberg begins an all indie May this Friday in New York with the microbudget marvel The Living Wake . He follows that next week with the drug-running drama Holy Rollers and the Michael Douglas showcase Solitary Man (as well as Wake ‘s L.A. opening). And then there’s David Fincher’s The Social Network , which he just completed as well. Needless to say, we had plenty to catch up on recently when Eisenberg called Movieline HQ.
