C onservative media outlets and their angry followers are maligning a Boston University theater professor on social media because she published a history of “Jingle Bells” that said it has racist roots. But her research is part of a necessary examination into this county’s racist past that should not exempt Christmas traditions. Its origins emerged from the racial politics of pre-Civil War Boston and from a group of commercial blackface performers traveling between Boston and New York. Hamill, who’s White, is not calling for the death of “Jingle Bells.” What she’s doing should be seen in the same light as the movement to delve into the racist past at educational institutions. None of that changes the past, but a simple acknowledgement goes a long way toward healing. That’s the case at Georgetown University , when the administration publicly recognized the wrongdoing and debt it owed to a mass slave sale in the 19th century that kept the institution alive. Harvard University’s president also understood that moving forward from racial conflict on campus required acknowledging that it was complicit in the slave trade. Rich Homie Quan Hit With Felony Drug Charges Rich Homie Quan is in a bad situation after getting arrested over the weekend, facing charges that could get him put away for a VERY long time. TMZ reports that the Atlanta rapper got booked on charges of felony possession with intent to distribute when cops caught him and five friends with drugs and guns over the weekend. It’s not clear how much weed Quan had on him, but that’s actually neither here nor there in Georgia, where the amount of contraband you have on you doesn’t determine whether or not you’re charged with a felony. For all any of us know, it may have been a small enough amount that it was meant for personal use. Either way, guns were also retrieved, but officers didn’t place that charge on Rich Homie Quan . His bail was set at $20,000. However, if he faces trial and gets a conviction, he could face a maximum of 30 years in prison for the drug charge. SMH! Honestly, you’d think he learned his lesson on the weed front after all the backlash from him smoking a blunt with his baby on his lap a few years back.
