Hi Haters: J. Lo Defends THAT Tribute, But What Did Motown Think?

Source: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images / Getty Jennifer Lopez Defends Motown Tribute J. Lo knows you had strong opinions about her shaking her Sazon seasoned cakes during a tribute to Motown Records and she issued a response. Right after (like seriously, as soon as) she performed during last night’s Grammys, Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier stopped her to ask how she felt. He also asked her to respond to critics who think she wasn’t qualified to hit the stage to pay homage to Berry Gordy’s Detroit record label. According to Jenny from the Block, she was “humbled and honored” to sing alongside Smokey Robinson. She also shut down critics with this; “Any type of music can inspire any type of artist… You can’t tell people what to love. You can’t tell people what they can and can’t do — what they should sing or not sing.” “Any type of music can inspire any type of artist… You can't tell people what to love. Lo’s work and Smokey Robinson himself CLEARLY loved being by Jenny’s side. THANK YOU! New Music: Motown Magic Soundtrack Set To Release November 16

Melodia/Motown Records will release Motown Magic Original Soundtrack – a 13-song collection of classic Motown hits newly recorded by some of today’s most acclaimed artists – just days before the November 20 premiere of Josh Wakely’s animated Netflix series Motown Magic. The album will be available in CD and digital formats on Friday, November 16. The series’ theme song – and the soundtrack’s lead-off track – is “ABC,” with 11-year-old Zacary James (Melisizwe Brothers) singing lead. “ABC” is one of the Jackson 5’s signature songs and charted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April of 1970, knocking The Beatles’ “Let It Be” off the top of the tally. Three-time GRAMMY® winner NE-YO covers Steve Wonder’s No. 1 hit “Superstition.” Other artists featured on the album, produced by Wakely, include Becky G, BJ The Chicago Kid, Skylar Grey, Calum Scott and Trombone Shorty. Motown legend Smokey Robinson, Executive Music Producer for the series, contributes newly recorded versions of two hits that he co-wrote for other artists: “My Girl,” which was The Temptations’ first No. 1 hit, and “I’ll Be Doggone,” which was Marvin Gaye’s first single to top the R&B chart and has never before been recorded by Robinson. The soundtrack’s recordings were produced by Don Was, Harvey Mason Jr., Bob Mothersbaugh and Sean Carey. Throughout its illustrious history, the Motown music label has released some of the world’s most beloved songs, many of which are featured in MOTOWN MAGIC.

A3C 2018: Atlanta Is Set To Host The Best Music Conference Ever Featuring Lil Wayne, Wu-Tang Clan And A Dipset Reunion

A3C 2018 In Atlanta Is One You Do NOT Want To Miss Atlanta has been the epicenter for rap music and hip-hop culture for nearly the past 20 years. So what better place to hold an all-emcompassing hip-hop conference/festival than the city that accounts for the most influential music in the industry right now? A3C (All Three Coasts) has been an Atlanta staple for several years now, getting bigger and better each go-round, but the 2018 version of the lauded event might just be the best EVER. One of the many, many things that people are looking forward to is Lil’ Wayne’s headlining set on Sunday, October 7th. The anticipation for Weezy F. Baby was already sky high, but now that it looks like this will be his first show after the release of The Carter V tomorrow, the city is gonna go apes#!t. In addition to Wayne, the entire Wu-Tang Clan is scheduled to perform in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their debut opus, Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers , AND a Dipset reunion show is on deck. Jim Jones, Juelz Santana AND Cam’ron. If you live in the Atlanta area and you miss this, then you are playing yourself and we hope your FOMO is acute. As lit as all that will be, concerts aren’t the only facet of A3C that will have people flocking to the city. The conference draws just as much excitement because the music industry’s biggest behind-the-scenes faces will also be in attendance. Folks like Ethiopia Habtemariam, president of Motown Records, industry vet and Translation CEO Steve Stoute, State of the Culture co-host and former Complex News personality Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins and our own Senior Content Director, Pop Culture, Janeé Bolden (if you ever wanted to meet someone from Bossip). Suffice to say there is a LOT going on and we haven’t even scratched the surface of the experience that A3C is offering to those who attend. BOSSIP will be giving you a deeper look into what you can expect throughout the week, but one thing’s for sure, YOU need to there! Michael Jackson’s pop-culture defining Thriller music video helped usher in MTV era of music yet the song itself isn’t even among his top 50 Billboard charting hits, according to Billboard . Below we list Jackson’s best charting hits of his almost mystical music career as determined by Billboard. The selections aren’t as obvious as it may seem. His collaborations with former Beatle Paul McCartney have generated the most chart success for Jackson. The widely-coined “King of Pop” is recognized as one of most successful entertainers of all time. Debuting in the music spotlight in 1964 as the front man and youngest sibling of Motown’s popular boy group the Jackson 5 before kicking off a solo career in 1971. Jackson became a transformative figure within music and pop culture with the release of his 1982 Thriller album and its supporting videos, which not only spawned the 14-minute horror cinematic opus that was the “Thriller” video but also MTV defining hits for chart toppers like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It”. Thriller would go on to be recognized as the greatest-selling album of all-time with over 100 million copies of the album sold, but Jackson, while still amassing a dizzying amount of fame as a performer (he’s garnered countless awards and has sold more than 750 million albums worldwide from Thriller and his other solo projects including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995)) also became as much of a caricatured celebrity for the bizzare headlines was linked to. 10. The Girl Is Mine (1982) Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney Billboard: “A duet with McCartney, the song was released in October 1982 and quickly debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 45, eventually rising to No. 2. “The Girl Is Mine” also famously kicked off an incredible run of hits from the “Thriller” album.” 9. ABC (1970) The Jackson 5 Billboard : “In somewhat of a case of chart fortune-telling, it was perhaps fitting that the Jackson 5′s second Hot 100 No. 1 dislodged the Beatles’ second-to-last No. 1, “Let It Be,” from the top of the chart, as arguably the most influential group in the history of pop music symbolically passed the baton to the format’s future King.” 8. I Want You Back (1970) The Jackson 5 Billboard : “Michael Jackson’s six-decade tenancy on the Billboard charts began the week of Nov. 15, 1969, when the then-11-year-old and his four brothers entered the chart at No. 90 with “I Want You Back.”” 7. Man In The Mirror (1988) Michael Jackson Billboard : “When “Man in the Mirror” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1988, Jackson became the first artist in the chart’s history to pull four No. 1 songs from one album.” 6. Dancing Machine (1974) The Jackson 5 Billboard: “”Dancing Machine” was the final Hot 100 top 10 for the group on Motown Records, as the act departed the label for Epic in 1976, re-christened as The Jacksons.” 5. Rock With You (1980) Michael Jackson Billboard : “Jackson’s third No. 1 spent four weeks in the Hot 100′s top slot, the longest of any of his singles at the time.” llowScriptAccess=”always” width=”640″ height=”360″> 4. Beat It (1982) Michael Jackson Billboard : “The dancefloor gem tallied 25 weeks on the Hot 100, the most by any single in Jackson’s career solo or with the Jacksons.” 3. I’ll Be There (1970) The Jackson 5 Billboard : “This single was the last and longest-reigning (five weeks) of four consecutive Hot 100 No. 1s in 1970 for the brothers from Gary, Ind.” 2. Billie Jean (1982) Michael Jackson Billboard: “”Billie Jean” propelled the singer to a true worldwide sensation. With seven weeks at No. 1, the song introduced the “Thriller” album to the masses.” 1. Say Say Say (1983) Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Billboard : “At six weeks, “Say” marks Jackson’s second-longest reign at No. 1 on the Hot 100. While “Billie Jean” spent one more week at No. 1 and two more weeks on the Hot 100 than “Say Say Say,” Jackson’s collaboration with McCartney spent more weeks in the top 10 (13 to 11), the top 20 (16 to 12), and the top 40 (18 to 17) than “Jean” did, making it his all-time biggest hit on the Billboard charts.”

‘Red Tails’ Proves All-Black Cast Can Soar At Box Office

‘I feel like this was a matter of just proving them wrong,’ Ne-Yo tells MTV News of the George Lucas-produced flick. By Rob Markman Ne-Yo in “Red Tails” Photo: Lucasfilm Ltd. It wasn’t easy getting “Red Tails” into theaters, but singer/actor Ne-Yo believes that after opening at #2 at the box office , it was well worth the fight. “I feel like we definitely did what we set out to do, which was make sure these incredible men, the Tuskegee Airmen, got the recognition that they deserved for the incredible things that they did for this country,” Ne-Yo told MTV News of the George Lucas-produced film on Wednesday. “And [we] proved to Hollywood that an ensemble cast of black faces can put asses in the seats, basically,” he laughed. “So I feel like we served our purpose.” “Red Tails” tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African-American fighter pilots who battled deep-rooted racism, while fighting in World War II. Both Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in the flick, while Ne-Yo, Method Man and Tristan Wilds have supporting roles. The historical piece hit theaters January 20, the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day and opened second behind “Underworld: Awakening.” Not bad for the singer/songwriter, who was also named senior vice president of A&R at Motown Records . Considering the movie wasn’t especially well-received by critics, “Red Tails” did well in its first weekend, surpassing initial expectations. Lucas appeared on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” earlier this month and claimed that major studios showed no interest in the film when he went to pitch it. “It’s because it’s an all-black movie,” he said. “There’s no major white roles in it at all. It’s one of the first all-black action pictures ever made.” “We’ve come a long way from when Martin was marching in the streets and getting rocks thrown at him. We’ve come a very, very long way,” Ne-Yo said. “However, even with that being said, we got a long way to go. As a black person, period, we’re kinda constantly in a state of proving, which is something that I came to wraps with a long time ago.” Despite the studios’ lack of interest in the film, Ne-Yo decided to let the success of “Red Tails” speak for itself. “At the end of the day, you complain about it, or you prove them wrong,” he said. “I feel like this was a matter of just proving them wrong.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Red Tails.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Ne-Yo Leaves Def Jam To Become Motown Exec

‘I’m honored that I’ve been given such a prestigious title,’ Ne-Yo says of new role as SVP in statement to MTV News. By Rob Markman Ne-Yo Photo: WireImage When you think Motown Records, you think of artists like Diana Ross, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, just to name a few. Now Ne-Yo joins the legendary list of soul and R&B singers that will record under the iconic brand created by Berry Gordy in 1959. The Grammy Award-winning singer (and co-star of the George Lucas-produced “Red Tails” ) has moved from Def Jam to Motown Records, according to a statement sent to MTV News on Wednesday (January 25). Not only that, Ne-Yo will also take over as the label’s senior vice president of A&R. “I’m honored that I
