Black Male Media Project Empowers Black Men To Reclaim Their Narratives

Read the original here:

T he National Association of Black Journalists is on a mission to combat the negative portrayals of Black men in the media. For the third consecutive year, the organization will host its “Black Male Media Project” as an avenue to empower and inspire Black men to reclaim their narratives. The organization has been dedicated to the advocacy of Black journalists worldwide. The Black Male Media Project was created as a safe space to foster discussions surrounding everything from the need for more diversity and inclusion in newsrooms to the improvement of positive Black male representation. One of the panels, dubbed #MoreThanMugshots, will take a deep dive into how Black men are portrayed in news coverage. The event is also utilized to align Black men with mentoring and networking opportunities. As part of the global event—which is slated to take place on June 1—nearly 20 NABJ chapters within the U.S. and other parts of the world will host workshops, panels, forums. There will be events hosted in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Philadelphia and other major cities. The organization hopes that the movement transcends beyond the physical safe spaces that they’ve created as part of the event and encourages individuals to connect and spread awareness about the efforts digitally through the use of the hashtag #InspireBlackMen on social media. “The overarching goal of BMMP is to counteract negative images of Black men often portrayed in the media,” said NABJ President Sarah Glover said in a statement. “We encourage all newsrooms across the country to make this a priority because how Black men are portrayed in the news can have a direct impact on issues such as racial profiling, discriminatory hiring practices, violence and more. Black men are intellectuals, professionals, innovators, spiritual leaders, activists, fathers, brothers and sons just like any other man and should be treated and portrayed that way.” Forums like the Black Male Media Project are needed. According to a study conducted by the Rutgers School of Public Health, there is a direct correlation between the media’s negative portrayal of Black men and how they are treated by the police. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” they said in a statement. Singleton “quietly struggled with hypertensions. More than 40% of African-American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe.” ***Update*** According to FOX 4 , legendary director John Singleton has died. He was 51. However, TMZ has a conflicting report that Singleton is still alive and on life support. According to Michael Blackmon, reporter at BuzzFeedNews, Singleton’s publicist reached out to him to deny death reports. I just got an email from John Singleton's publicist about that one report saying he died early Monday morning. She said: “John is still in life support. That reporting is inaccurate.” — Michael Blackmon (@blackmon) April 29, 2019 FOX4KC.com claims that Singleton’s family informed FOX4 film critic Shawn Edwards, Monday morning, that Singleton has died. The Boys N Tha Hood director suffered a fatal stroke two weeks ago and was in a medically coma until reports surfaced that he has passed. Singleton’s family is divided over his estate, TMZ reports. Singleton’s mother Sheila Ward is the conservator over his estate, however his daughter Cleopatra filed a motion in an attempt to gain control over his estate. But the battle isn’t limited to both Singleton’s mother and daughter, his girlfriend is also trying to gain control over his estate. Conflicting reports about Singleton’s death circulated last week after his daughter reportedly claimed his health was improving in an attempt to gain control out of fear Ward will “fleece” the estate and isolate the children out of their father’s $35 million fortune. Singleton was the first Black director to be nominated for an Academy Award for his prolific film  Boyz n the Hood. Debate Rages Over Whether Black Women Support Bernie Sanders

Source: Pacific Press / Getty T he lingering question of how much support Bernie Sanders has from Black women voters was exacerbated last week during his appearance at the She the People Presidential Forum in Houston last week. That debate continued in a major way Sunday when one of Sanders’ top campaign staffers, a Black woman, defended the Vermont senator’s appeal to the coveted demographic. But that appeal was uncertain after Sanders, one of eight Democratic White House hopefuls at the event billed as “the first-ever Presidential candidate forum focused on women of color,” was asked about his plan to stem the rise of white nationalism. The Vermont senator’s familiar refrain that he once marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. elicited groans, jeers and boos, suggesting the audience wanted to hear new talking points instead of those from the 2016 election. Former Ohio Sen. Nina Turner , who is Sander’s campaign co-chair, appeared on the AM Joy show on MSNBC Sunday morning and cited statistics to show the senator was support from the vital voting bloc of Black women. . @ninaturner : The @MorningConsult poll shows very clearly that almost half of #BernieSanders ' supporters are of color. He's polling over 50% with women in general. So yes the senator does have a larger vision… #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/dBXMKWslDJ — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 But Joy Reid , host of the show, and Dr. Jason Johnson , another panelist, begged to differ and said Sanders squandered the perfect opportunity for him to bolster his support from Black women voters. They both said Sanders failed to answer the question and instead relied on tired talking points that don’t move the dial on the conversation about white nationalism in America. . @DrJasonJohnson on #ShethePeople : This was Sanders' audience to lose… He got the largest number of cheers when he walked on stage & blew it… He was asked about what he would do about white nationalism… He failed to answer the actual question he was addressed with. #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/z46dT0lfFK — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 Watch the full exchange below. Turner previously blasted the Black women in the audience who booed, saying at a rally the day after the event that the jeers were disrespectful. “In what world when you are sitting on the stage telling folks about your history, and you mention the fact that you were on the March on Washington with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Fort Worth, in what world do people boo that?” she asked the crowd. “That happened to Senator Sanders yesterday, and I’m calling it out. In what world? You don’t boo folks for that. And I don’t care if it was somebody who I didn’t care about their policies, if they stood up with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other heroes and sheroes, we need to shout that out.” Bernie Adviser Nina Turner Blasts Audience From Black Women's Forum for Booing Senator's MLK Comments https://t.co/WAKJrDtx0V pic.twitter.com/x5GgU8Cql1 — Tormund XtopHodor, First of His Name (@tommyxtopher) April 25, 2019 That commentary prompted a response from LaTosha Brown , the co-founder of the elections advocacy group Black Votes Matter. She said that the last thing anyone should be doing was blaming Black women voters. I was disappointed at Bernie’s presentation at #SheThePeople but NOW I’m really getting pissed! Giving an uninspiring talk is one thing but blaming Black women for Sanders’ lack of preparedness, aloofness and poor performance is unacceptable. https://t.co/4yLWXroXAV — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) April 27, 2019 That wasn’t the first time that Sanders has ducked questions about his plans for Black America should he be elected president. Back in February, Sanders was in the middle of a CNN town hall event when a Black woman in the audience asked him about his stance on reparations . But the 77-year-old, who has been a bit iffy (some might say he’s flip-flopped) on the topic, further blurred the lines when he ended his very noncommittal answer by stating, “It depends on what the word means,” he said. His multitude of past racial blunders — remember when he said that white people who didn’t vote for Stacey Abrams “are not necessarily racist” because they felt “uncomfortable” voting for a Black candidate? — have also been far from a good look for Sanders. Nevertheless, Sanders was still in second place in the most recent Democratic presidential nomination poll published by Real Clear Politics. Agenda Watch: Elizabeth Warren Speaks On Discrepancy Between Black Women’s And White Women’s Health Care Treatment

Source: Sergio Flores / Getty Elizabeth Warren Talks Comparative Health Care Treatment Between Black And White Women Elizabeth Warren wants to be President of The United States. She can’t be President of The United States if she doesn’t pass the smell test with African-American women. During the She The People Forum in Houston on Wednesday, Warren spoke directly to the issues that she has her sights on that would directly improve the lives of Black women. Here’s what she said according to FoxNews : “And there is a specific problem, as you rightly identified, for women of color who are three, four times more likely to die in childbirth,” Warren said. “And here’s the thing, even after we do the adjustments for income, for education, this is true across the board. This is true for well-educated African American women, for wealthy African American women, and the best studies that I’m seeing put it down to just one thing, prejudice,” she added. “That doctors and nurses don’t hear African American women’s medical issues the same way that they hear the same things from white women.” That’s pretty direct. Warren’s plan to rectify this problem is to offer incentives to hospitals who manage to balance the infant mortality rate and remove certain funding if the rate begins to increase. What do you think about Warren’s take? Is this something that would make you vote for her in 2020?
