Black Male Media Project Empowers Black Men To Reclaim Their Narratives

Read the original here:

T he National Association of Black Journalists is on a mission to combat the negative portrayals of Black men in the media. For the third consecutive year, the organization will host its “Black Male Media Project” as an avenue to empower and inspire Black men to reclaim their narratives. The organization has been dedicated to the advocacy of Black journalists worldwide. The Black Male Media Project was created as a safe space to foster discussions surrounding everything from the need for more diversity and inclusion in newsrooms to the improvement of positive Black male representation. One of the panels, dubbed #MoreThanMugshots, will take a deep dive into how Black men are portrayed in news coverage. The event is also utilized to align Black men with mentoring and networking opportunities. As part of the global event—which is slated to take place on June 1—nearly 20 NABJ chapters within the U.S. and other parts of the world will host workshops, panels, forums. There will be events hosted in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Philadelphia and other major cities. The organization hopes that the movement transcends beyond the physical safe spaces that they’ve created as part of the event and encourages individuals to connect and spread awareness about the efforts digitally through the use of the hashtag #InspireBlackMen on social media. “The overarching goal of BMMP is to counteract negative images of Black men often portrayed in the media,” said NABJ President Sarah Glover said in a statement. “We encourage all newsrooms across the country to make this a priority because how Black men are portrayed in the news can have a direct impact on issues such as racial profiling, discriminatory hiring practices, violence and more. Black men are intellectuals, professionals, innovators, spiritual leaders, activists, fathers, brothers and sons just like any other man and should be treated and portrayed that way.” Forums like the Black Male Media Project are needed. According to a study conducted by the Rutgers School of Public Health, there is a direct correlation between the media’s negative portrayal of Black men and how they are treated by the police. Das Racist: New Zealand Pool Sign Taken Down After Parents Complain That It’s Shady AF

Source: Nattapool / Getty Apparently America isn’t the only place where racist are getting called out on their ish. A public health campaign in Auckland, New Zealand has been criticised for promoting casual racism after Labour MP Tamati Coffey posted it on Facebook. Some parents claim that the white girl in the campaign is only insinuating that the little boy will pee in the pool just because he’s Black. One concerned mom responded: “I am an older female of European descent and I don’t like the sign. I very much doubt a little girl would running around saying this kind of thing to other kids.” Another added: “It’s funny at first glance. But then you realise the racial profiling. And it’s not funny anymore. We are so conditioned to subtle racism, that we just laugh and say nothing.” But the complaints were sure ’nuff heard. Auckland Council general manager of parks sports and recreation, Mace Ward, released a statement saying, “This particular sign was part of a series and it was not our intent to upset anyone. The campaign was created in response to potential public health issues and as a result we’ve have fewer pool shutdowns and less risk to human health. We’re removing our signs from our leisure centres and will take a look at the whole campaign.” Thoughts?

Ayanna Pressley Calls Out Democrats For Not Supporting Black Women Candidates

View original post here:

M assachusetts Representative-elect Ayanna Pressley remained true to the message she shared with NewsOne before winning her primary race for Congress: The Democratic Party is at a crossroads and must support Black female candidates to succeed in the future. “I think our campaign is asking the question, ‘Democrats, are we really who we say we are or do we just roll out hashtags and bumper stickers to make for cute slogans’?” she told NewsOne when asked about the party’s failure to support her and other women of color. See Also: Blue Party: Say Hello To The Black Wave At a gathering Tuesday of party donors in Washington, D.C., Pressley talked to the audience about the record high number of Democratic female candidates who won elections in 2018, according to an audio recording of the event obtained by BuzzFeed News . “Now we must push ourselves to ask the tough questions about whether or not we provided them with the institutional support so we can break through more glass and concrete ceilings as rapidly as possible,” she said, adding that the party must invest in candidate diversity, as well as inclusion at the staff level. #NOTheOne is giving shine to all the Black women currently owning the political space this season. It includes several members who are the first African-American women to represent their state or district, including Pressley, Lauren Underwood of Illinois, Jahana Hayes from Connecticut and Georgia’s Lucy McBath . Unlike the other three, Pressley and many other Black female candidates received no support from the Democratic Party. Indeed, the party’s establishment backed Pressley’s primary opponent, 10-term incumbent Rep. Michael E. Capuano . Despite trailing in the polls leading up to the September primary, Pressley won 58.9 percent of the vote to his 41.1 percent. Pressley, who was a Boston city council member, vowed to champion bread-and-butter issues for her constituents, such as improved housing, public health and education, as well as economic development and criminal justice reform. She connected with struggling working-class families by promoting those progressive issues, she told NewsOne. At the gathering Tuesday in the nation’s capital, Pressley told her audience that she discovered a “mandate for hope” while running her own campaign and supporting the campaign of other insurgent candidates. She urged party leaders to take careful note as they navigate a course for the 2020 elections. Jenna Jameson: Down to 123 Pounds!! Weight Loss Out of Control?

In the years since she retired from the world of adult film, life hasn’t always been kind to Jenna Jameson. Jameson has struggled with addiction, endured brushes with the law, and battles with depression and anxiety, all before an audience of millions of social media followers. Thankfully, the mother of three has managed to turn things around as of late. In April of 2017, Jameson welcomed her third child , a girl named Batel Lu. In the months since giving birth, Jenna has devoted herself to living a healthier lifestyle and  Just last month Jameson showed off an astonishing 57-pound weight loss on Instagram, and it seems she’s continued making progress since then: The 44-year-old posted the above photo earlier this week along with a lengthy caption in which she discusses the lessons that she’s learned over the course of her weight loss journey. “One aspect of fear that we all trip over is fear of failure,” Jameson wrote. “This was the major component in my procrastination on getting healthy after having Batel. I kept trying to convince myself I was ok with my “new” size. I wasn’t,” she continued. “It really was fear of failing. I was so afraid I couldn’t reach my goals like I was so accustomed to, I just told myself ‘why bother?’ I conquered sobriety, but that came with a whole set of new issues… actually FEELING my feelings. Raw, painful feelings.” Jameson went on to reveal that she’s now lost 63 pounds in a matter of months. She says she’s officially reached her ideal weight of 123 pounds. “Batelli is 17 months and I’m 123. I did it,” she said. “So to finish up this long a— post, just know it’s normal to fear failing at losing your weight… but if you don’t try, you’ll never know the utter triumph when you do achieve your goals.” But despite shedding an astonishing number of pounds in a very short period of time, Jameson says she has no intention of slowing down: “When I do make these before and after pictures it motivates me to continue!” she recently wrote on Instagram. Jenna deserves to be commended for her weight loss thus far, and it looks as though she achieved the awesome feat through commitment, exercise, and devotion to the ultra-low-carb keto diet. But at 5’7”, 123 pounds makes for a mighty thin frame, and fans have begun imploring Jameson to slow down in her fitness routine. As far as we can tell, there’s no cause for concern just yet, but here’s hoping Jenna continues to prioritize being healthy over being thin.

Tess Holliday Claps Back After Piers Morgan Body-Shames Her Cosmo Cover

Piers Morgan can be such a mixed bag. It’s nice ot see him berate that vulture Samantha Grant . It’s gross to see him ask Caitlin Jenner creepy questions about her body . This time, he’s making gross comments about another woman’s body — plus size model and trailblazer Tess Holliday. Tess graced the cover of Cosmopolitan , and Piers was apparently unable to resist commenting on her body and accusing her of being some sort of public health hazard. Before Piers decided to insert his opinion into the narrative, Tess was delighted with her cover. “Phew,” Tess writes on Instagram. “I’m literally a COSMO GIRL!!” “Can’t believe I’m saying that!” she continues. “Thank you @CosmopolitanUK for this incredible opportunity ” Tess discusses the impact that body positivity can have, writing: “If I saw a body like mine on this magazine when I was a young girl, it would have changed my life ” Tess advises her fans: “Issue hits stands 8/31!” Unfortunately, Piers Morgan is one of those dudes who worries about other people loving themselves on their terms instead of on his. “As Britain battles an ever-worsening obesity crisis,” Piers laments. “This is the new cover of Cosmo.” “Apparently,” Piers continues. “We’re supposed to view it as a ‘huge step forward for body positivity.’” “What a load of old baloney,” Piers declares. ” This cover,” Piers continues. “Is just as dangerous & misguided as celebrating size zero models.” Tess took to Twitter and hit back. “To everyone saying I’m a burden to the British health care system,” Tess begins. “I’m american,” Texx explains. “So you don’t have to worry about my fat ass.” She is such a delight and doesn’t hesitate to use humor when speaking truth to power. Good for her. (Naturally, we shouldn’t conflate body size with health, and no one should be seen as a “burden” because of their health) Tess says that the people who are uncomfortable with the size of her body, which literally does not impact them at all, should have more important things on their minds. “Worry about what horrible people you are,” Tess suggests to her detractors. That’s harsh — but considering that Piers just accused her of being the next Typhoid Mary and he was far from the worst person to comment, it’s fair. She says that they have demonstrated that they’re horrible “by whining about how me being on the cover of a glossy magazine impacts your small minded life.” It’s difficult to understand why so many people feel like they have the right to tell other people what to do with their own bodies. Tess’ body does not impact the rest of us. It just doesn’t.  But a photo of her on the cover of a magazine could have a very real and powerful effect on little girls (or others, but girls especially) who are struggling to love themselves. When people like Piers say that body positive images of Tess and women like her will somehow make the “obesity epidemic” worse, it is clear what they really mean. They mean that people who have learned to love themselves won’t go on dangerous starvation diets that ultimately don’t work in a desperate attempt to get their bodies looking how Piers wants them to. If you think that one body type is more attractive than another, that’s fine — we all have preferences. But women are allowed to just exist without you wanting to bang them.

Yuck Daddy!! ANOTHER Freaky Flick Star Contracts HIV While Filming Movie Scene

Ewwww Another Adult Film Star Tests Positive For HIV While freaky flick actors continue to protest the mandate requiring them to use condoms while filming, yet ANOTHER one of their own has contracted HIV while on set. via Fox News California public health officials issued an alert Monday after finding “very strong evidence” that an adult film actor became infected with HIV as a result of unprotected sex on an out-of-state film shoot. The Department of Public Health said the male actor tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS after engaging in unprotected sex with several other male actors during two separate film shoots. He had tested negative before the shoot. “During the second film shoot, he had symptoms of a viral infection,” the alert states. “The actor went to a clinic and had another blood test that showed he had recently become infected with HIV.” One actor from the second shoot has since tested positive for HIV. According to the health department, lab results indicate the first actor who tested positive “probably transmitted” HIV to the second. A health department official was unable to immediately release further details regarding the lab testing and investigation. The alert notes that very early in an HIV infection, the test can be negative “even though the actor really does have HIV.” This is just gross….SMH. Continue reading
