Recovering comedian Artie Lange said he would give anything to get his job back on the Howard Stern Show. He has not, however, asked Howard about it. Lange left the show in early 2010 after a sudden hospitalization. He later went to rehab to get his alcoholism under control, but is reportedly better now. Stern discussed Artie this morning, saying Lange’s comments “stirred up a whole bunch of conversation that I don’t even know how to begin to address.” Asked if Artie ever personally approached Howard to ask for his job back, Howard replied, “No, but I think he would if he could get a hold of me.” As for Artie’s possible return to radio with a new show , Howard said, “Of course I support it. I think it would be great. I’d like to listen to Artie.” Howard, whose show Lange was a fixture on for years, added, “I’m glad to hear he’s feeling better … I’m pulling for him. I hope he does okay.”

A story posted on the New York Post’s Page Six this morning claims that Howard Stern funnyman Artie Lange attempted to commit suicide over the weekend. He apparently stabbed himself nine times. The story reads: “Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange’s frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six “hesitation wounds” and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange’s management team confirmed that the Howard Stern sidekick stabbed himself, adding that his mother had come to visit him that day to drop off food. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding.” Stern mentioned the report this morning but decided not to read it on the air. “I’m sorry. I just feel sick about this, I don’t know what to do,” Stern said. Artie Lange has been absent from the show for the past several weeks. If he survives this, let’s hope Artie gets the help he needs…and soon! Stand-up comic, published author and co-star of The Howard Stern radio show Artie Lange was quietly rushed to the hospital Sunday night . At that time, there was no further explanation and Stern remained tight-lipped about it on his show. But now, Page Six is reporting that the troubled comedian, who has a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, gambling addiction and depression, tried to commit suicide by cutting himself nine times. Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding. “We all have our demons,” Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange’s past battles with addiction. “Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He’s a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don’t forget how great he is.” [From Page Six] Lange is a textbook example of a “Crying on the inside” comedian. Love him or hate him, this is pretty darn sad. Stabbing yourself is a desperate act, indicative of someone at the end of their rope. Anyone who listens to the show knows that Artie has been in a bad way for quite some time, but hasn’t been ready to do the work needed to stay off drugs, treat his depression and take better care of himself. At least, not for more than a couple of weeks at a time. I hope he takes some time off and focuses on his mental and physical health. 6 comments Subscribe Subscribe Howard Stern made revealing statements Wednesday morning about his relationship with co-host Artie Lange and why he trusted the heroin-addicted comedian’s claims that he was clean and sober in the months before his violent suicide attempt. The Artie Lange discussion launched from one of Robin Quivers’ news stories about the domestic violence charges levied against ultimate fighting champ Tito Ortiz by porn star and frequent Howard Stern Show guest Jenna Jameson. Ortiz is now stating that the altercation with Jameson erupted over the porn queen’s addiction to Oxycontin pills. Tito Ortiz arrested for assault on porn star Jenna Jameson (video) “Did it seem to you that she was on any drugs?” Quivers asked Stern regarding Jameson’s most recent in-studio Howard Stern Show appearance. “How would I know Robin?” sighed Stern. “No. She seemed coherent. Then again you’re talking to a guy who said Artie was clean and sober. I believed him. Don’t go by me. I’m not good at picking out anyone who’s high. That has been proven. I am just not keyed into that.” Watch the Artie Lange ‘Hurt’ video below Quivers then made a surprising critique of Stern’s handling of the Artie Lange issue. “Well maybe it’s because you’re just not interested in anybody but yourself?” she prosed. “That would be one of the reasons,” said Stern. “The other reason would be I’m not a ‘drug person’ and I’m not aware of that.” Quivers wasn’t letting Stern off the hook that easily. “No,” she stated. “But I mean you could notice if somebody’s SLEEPING.” Video: Bob Levy blames Howard Stern for Artie Lange’s suicide attempt During the 2009 Howard Stern Show season, co-host Artie Lange fell asleep on-air multiple times. At one point, Lange’s lack of consciousness became a featured bit on the show. The comedian was laid out on the in-studio couch with a microphone propped up next to him and the show proceeded live with Lange snoring along heartily as accompaniment. “That-that…I thought he was tired,” said Stern earnestly. “I honestly did. I said: ‘The guy’s worn out. He doesn’t know how to put himself to bed at night. He can’t-he’s busy with the game. He’s excited.” Chris Kanyon talked about suicide with Howard Stern and Artie Lange (photo slideshow) Quivers kept pressing: “You could notice that somebody’s, you know, losing the hair on his arms,…and,…eating out of control.” “I did notice that. I was the one who noticed that,” said Howard defensively. “I saw all that. But I still-I believed him. I believe people. I believe in man’s honesty. I didn’t think he would lie to me.” “All right,” replied Quivers with what sounded like a heaping spoonful of judgment, and then moved on to discuss the plight of Bret Michaels who is recovering from a brain hemorrhage in an Arizona ICU. NPH sang with Mr. Schue, and did a different kind of duet with Sue Sylvester. By Jean Bentley Neil Patrick Harris in “Glee” Photo: FOX Remember the weeks before “Glee” came back from hiatus and all we had to tide us over were glimpses of upcoming scenes in promos? And there was one promo that showed Mr. Schuster making out with Idina Menzel’s character, and for a hot second you were like “OMG he’s making out with Rachel!”? Well, you weren’t crazy. Anyone with eyes can see that the Broadway legend and Lea Michele are pretty much identical. But it wasn’t until tonight’s episode that we learned for sure what everyone had suspected all along: Shelby Corcoran, you are the mother. Rachel’s birth mother is, in fact, the Vocal Adrenaline coach, and Rachel’s foxy new boyfriend, former VA star-turned-New Directions transfer Jesse St. James, has been but a pawn in Shelby’s evil plan. Except the plan isn’t all that evil. Shelby explained to her young minion that the only thing she regretted in life was not being able to meet her daughter. Unfortunately, the surrogate contract wouldn’t let her contact Rachel until Rachel turned 18. To meet any sooner, it had to be Rachel’s idea. Shelby had Jesse get close to Rachel (seducing her was his idea) and encourage her to try to find her birth mother. He planted a tape from Shelby in the box of baby stuff Rachel dug out from her basement, helping her realize that no, her birth mother wasn’t Patti LuPone or Bernadette Peters. It took some pressing, but he finally got Rachel to listen to the tape of Shelby singing “I Dreamed a Dream,” which turned into a lovely mother/daughter duet. Speaking of dreams, Neil Patrick Harris dropped by William McKinley High to crush a few. NPH is always great when he’s playing a jerk (which seems incongruous since he appears to be such a nice guy in real life), and last night’s douche du jour was Bryan Ryan, Mr. Schue’s former glee club nemesis and the current school board member in charge of extracurricular funding. He was at the school deciding which arts program to cut and had his eye on the glee club, since it had brought him nothing but pain when his dream of becoming a famous performer didn’t pan out. He advised the gleeks that their dreams, too, would one day come crashing down around them and lead to a crack addiction. Schuester pleaded his case to keep the club and let the kids have their dreams, but Bryan wouldn’t relent. That is, until his love of performing (and zeal for competition) was reignited. Will and Bryan both went out for the part of Jean Valjean in the local Lima production of “Les Mis#233;rables,” and a tight audition schedule meant they had to try out together by dueting on “Dream On.” Schue got the part, but wound up trading it to Bryan Ryan to save the glee club. Also, somehow Bryan Ryan and Sue Sylvester totally DID IT. Yeah. Try to get that mental picture out of your brain before we continue. Since the drama with his rival prevented Mr. Schuester from giving the kids an assignment this week, Tina created her own assignment to help Artie achieve his dream of being able to dance. But instead of helping Artie deal with his reality and come up with his own way of dancing, Tina told him that he would definitely be able to walk (and dance) one day. In a particularly heartbreaking scene, Artie tried to use crutches to walk around the choir room, but fell on his face instead. Artie daydreamed leading an intricate mall-set dance number to “The Safety Dance,” which gave former boy-bander Kevin McHale a chance to get out of the wheelchair and show off his sweet dance moves. It was also a cute homage to the “Glee” flash mobs that dedicated fans have organized in cities like Seattle and Rome. But Artie eventually realized that this dream would never happen. Tina choreographed a tap dance number to “Dream a Little Dream of Me” with Mike Chang instead, while Artie sang. What did you think of Neil Patrick Harris’ guest appearance on “Glee”?
