Lupe Fiasco’s ‘T.R.O.Y.’ Remake Is ‘Wack,’ Pete Rock Says

Catch Lupe Fiasco on ‘RapFix Live’ this Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Lupe Fiasco Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage When Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth dropped “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” 20 years ago, the celebrated rap duo was still reeling over the unexpected death of their dear friend Troy “Trouble T” Dixon of Heavy D & the Boyz. What began as the most personal of lyrical eulogies soon became an iconic hip-hop track, so when Lupe Fiasco reworked the “T.R.O.Y.” instrumental for his new single “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” on Monday, things were all good until Pete Rock chimed in. “No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one,” Rock tweeted on Monday after hearing the track. While Lu’s new single clearly is a nod to “T.R.O.Y,” the original track isn’t exactly an original composition, as it samples from jazz musician Tom Scott’s 1967 song “Today.” It’s possible that “Around My Way,” which was produced by Simonsayz and B-Sidet, sampled a portion of their track from Scott’s version. This isn’t the first time that Lupe has paid homage to Pete Rock either, he once freestyled over the “Reminisce” beat for his “Dopeboys” freestyle with Wale and Kardinal Offishall. Lyrically, Lu continues to push rap’s topical boundaries on “Around My Way,” choosing to rhyme about social-political ills in Ghana and corruption in the oil industry. Rock stressed that he did not have a personal problem with the Chicago rapper, he just didn’t appreciate the remake. “I’m not flattered @ all. Dat sh– is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f–kin self. Smh,” he wrote . On Tuesday, Lupe began tweeting links to other “T.R.O.Y.” remakes, including Mann’s J.R. Rotem-produced “Reminisce” and a remixed version of the song which featured Journalist, Mr. Cheeks and Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth themselves. Finally Lupe took the high road and tweeted a YouTube link to the original Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth video with the hash tag “#20YearsLaterStillTheBest.” Catch Lupe Fiasco on this week’s “RapFix Live,” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Do you side with Pete Rock? Lady Gaga Responds To Islamic Threats Over Show In Indonesia Show

Gaga’s tour promoters are negotiating with government officials for Jakarta concert to go forward despite threats from extremist groups. By John Mitchell Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Lady Gaga has responded to the increasingly volatile situation surrounding her “Born This Way” concert in Indonesia, saying on Twitter that she has been asked by authorities to censor her show and has received threats of violence from Islamic hardliners should it go on as planned. Earlier reports indicated that Gaga’s planned June 3 concert at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium had been canceled after Indonesian national police refused to issue a permit, citing objections from Islamic groups who worried that Gaga’s performance would corrupt the nation’s youth. However, Gaga’s tour promoters are currently negotiating with government officials and police for the concert to go forward as planned. “The Jakarta situation is 2-fold: Indonesian authorities demand I censor the show & religious extremist separately, are threatening violence,” Gaga tweeted Tuesday (May 22). “If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone.” Fifty thousand tickets for the show have been sold. While Indonesia is a secular state governed as a multi-party representative democratic republic, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims, most of whom practice a moderate form of the religion. However, there are also more extremist fringe groups that have in recent years become increasingly vocal, particularly regarding Western entertainers visiting the country. Beyonc

Lady Gaga Cancels Show In Indonesia After Protests

Islamic hard-liners worry that sexy clothes and dancing will corrupt youth. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Lady Gaga’s Twitter Lady Gaga lives to provoke and push the envelope. But not everyone is up for her antics. The “Americano” singer has been forced to cancel her sold-out June 3 “Born This Way Ball” show at the 52,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia after Islamic hard-liners and conservative lawmakers said her sexy costumes, suggestive dance moves and “vulgar” style could corrupt the nation’s youth. According to the Associated Press , a spokesperson for the national police said on Tuesday (May 15) that the permit for the show has been denied after religious conservatives worried that the concert could undermine the nation’s moral fiber. Some of the critics actually threatened to use physical force to prevent Gaga from getting off her plane. Though Indonesia is a secular state, it has the world’s largest population of Muslims and a small extremist fringe of religious leaders has been more vocal in recent years. “She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching,” said Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of hardline Islamic Defender Front (FPI), according to Reuters . “This is dangerous.” Local police worried that they might not be able to guarantee security at the show and suggested to national police that the permit for what was to be Gaga’s biggest gig on her current Asian tour be pulled. Every seat at the Karno stadium had been sold, with half of them going in the first two hours. The AP reported that permits for shows are typically issued three weeks before concerts in Jakarta, so it is not uncommon for tickets to be sold well ahead of receiving a final permit. Gaga’s Asian tour started last month and the Indonesian flap is not the first bump she’s faced along the road. Gigs in South Korea
were 18-and-over because conservatives in that country also raised objections over the concert’s content. Related Artists Lady Gaga

SUNDANCE: Everything You’ve Heard About Indonesion Actioner The Raid Is True

Expect Twitter to explode shortly with reactions to the Sundance premiere of Gareth Evans’ The Raid , the Indonesian actioner that blew minds at Toronto but has been kept largely under wraps until now by Sony Classics, who smartly snatched up the pic and will distribute it this March. I caught The Raid last week at a pre-Sundance screening with its new score by Mike Shinoda — yes, of Linkin Park — and can attest that the early praise was well-earned because holy crap, it’s amazing . Everything you’ve heard about it? True. I know, I just got done ranting about film festival goggles and inflated pre-release hype. But being mindful of falling into that trap, I’ve thought a lot about The Raid in the days since, and it’s stuck. Not only that — it’s the rare film that I can’t wait to see again. I’ve described it by pointing to the famous one-take staircase fight in Tony Jaa’s The Protector : It prompts the kind of rush of that scene, only for the entire runtime. Briefly, the simple premise of The Raid : SWAT agents in Jakarta, Indonesia, descend on an apartment building run by a local crime lord, only to find that the place is infested with criminals and the odds are stacked against them. The action emphasis is on gun battles and a form of martial arts called silat, which Evans previously used in his 2009 film Merantau , and to say the very least, it’s a brutal, stabby, bone-crunching kind of action pic. Pairing Evans’ film with a new electro-ish score by Shinoda works extremely well as their energies are well-matched, though I can’t say what the original score sounded like. Suffice to say it may be the best thing to come of Linkin Park, like ever, and it adds a strangely perfect universality to the proceedings — as if of course even halfway across the world in Indonesia dubstep is a thing, and folks imagine their every move underscored by a badass, grimy soundtrack. Who doesn’t? There are plot intricacies that are best left unspoiled, touching on the documented predominance of crime and corruption in Jakarta, but human relationships at the center of the chaos work well; in star Iko Uwais, Evans found a performer who can balance character while pulling off great, believable fight choreography right in front of your eyes. Even the extras seem like seasoned martial arts pros, and there are dozens, maybe a hundred who play nameless thugs and cops, battling it out in this feature-length melee. As for those fights, The Raid features some of the bloodiest, impressive, and most inventive action sequences in recent memory. It’s a movie packed with highlights and few moments of rest, full of bruising elbows and machetes and machine gun blasts and axes to the neck where most action flicks these days throw stage punches in the wind. This is the unrelenting action tour de force we’ve been waiting for, and a window into the world of silat, heretofore largely unexplored in film. Need more proof? Watch a few redband clips below. The Raid will be released on March 23. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter . Get more of Movieline’s Sundance coverage here.

Kelly Clarkson’s Jakarta Concert Is Banned

According to an Indonesian Islamic organization, the upcoming concert by Kelly Clarkson in Jakarta is banned under Islamic law for it is being sponsored by a tobacco company. The Muhammadiyah is the second largest Islamic organization in the world’s most populous Muslim country. It has recently proclaimed all smoking forbidden under Islam. According to Yanuar Ilyas, head of the organization’s fatwa, there was no smoking fatwa applied to Clarkson’s concert. It is made clear that smoking is forbidden under Islam. Kelly Clarkson’s Jakarta concert is scheduled for April 29 and is being sponsored by L.A. Lights cigarettes. Even the U.S.-based campaign for Tobacco-Free kids also raised objections and asked Clarkson to cancel the sponsorship. According to Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, if the singer pursues with this concert, she is choosing to be a representative and a spokesperson for the tobacco industry and further more, helping them to market cigarettes to children. On the other hand, if she rejects the sponsorship, she can send a strong and powerful message to children not only in Indonesia but all around the world. Indonesia still has to sign on to such ban before it becomes official. Clarkson’s fans also gave their comments on her Facebook page to drop the tobacco sponsorship. According to a posting entitled “Jakarta Mishap”, the singer said that it is going to be a lose-lose situation and that she’s not happy about it, but the damage has been done and she can’t refuse to cancel on her fans.
