Dancing With the Stars: Was It Rigged for Laurie Hernandez?

Laurie Hernandez is the youngest person to win Dancing With the Stars.  The Olympic gymnast managed to win the title on last night’s season finale . Her win was thrilling watch, but it was not all the surprising. Being a gymnast, you could say she already had an advantage in the competition.  She already knew what she would have to do if she had any hope of winning, and that would mean she would have to undergo rigorous coaching.  It was evident way back on the season premiere that producers were betting big on Hernandez. She was given the closing performance on the opener and that generally means the producers thought she was the real deal.  View Slideshow: Dancing with the Stars Pros: Ranked! We already knew that votes from the audience counted and Hernandez was basically America’s sweetheart before even setting foot in the ballroom.  She got a lot of publicity throughout her stint on the Olympics and it was all good. America watched as she went from strength-to-strength.  Laurie Hernandez Breaks Down on Dancing with the Stars She and her team from the Rio Olympics were practically everywhere after taking part in the Olympics.  Additionally, producers opted to show clips of Laurie’s now deceased grandmother, who was very positive about her appearing on the show.  Showing things like that definitely makes it look like the producers were gearing Laurie up for the win. If America’s influence was not helping Hernandez before that, then it most definitely was after that.  Some people have started being able to accurately predict how the season will play out just based on the blatant favoritism in the premiere.  America does love people winning who have great stories, and there’s no denying that Laurie’s journey this year has been anything short of amazing.  It is difficult to rig a show with a scoring system, unless the judges play a part in it, but we’ll probably never find out.  What do you think about all of this? Sound off below! View Slideshow: Dancing with the Stars Season 23: Cast Announced!

Laurie Hernandez Breaks Down on DWTS: Watch! Be Inspired!

Laurie Hernandez is only 16 years old. We just had to write that out in order to believe it. Because you would not be blamed, after watching this gymnast perform on Dancing with the Stars, for thinking she's about four decades older than that. Such is the sort of maturity on display each Monday night this fall, as Hernandez achieved a pair of perfect scores during Week 10 of the dancing competition. But what everyone is talking about today is less Laurie's dancing ability and more the tears she shed after completing a Foxtrot last night. Joined by partner Val Chmerkovskiy, Hernandez said ahead of time that she dedicated the routine to her grandmother, who recently passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Nearly as soon as she stopped moving and shaking and processed the moment, standing in front of the judges on Monday, Hernandez simply broke down. No one could blame her. “I just went out there and just gave it my all, I kind of look at dance as a way to express my emotions and my feelings,” Laurie told E! News after the show. “Instead of having to say anything I was able to dance my way through it. It was kind of like a way for me to let it go. I feel like a totally different person. I feel like I've grown up a couple of years. It's been amazing. I've met some amazing people including big bro over here. “This journey has been incredible. I'm never going to forget it.” WATCH HER INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOW:

Rick Ross Praises Keri Hilson’s ‘The Way You Love Me’ Video

Hilson’s video co-star compares the racy clip to Janet Jackson’s ‘Control.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Audrey Kim Keri Hilson Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Keri Hilson may have stirred things up with her steamy “The Way You Love Me,” but her video co-star, Rick Ross, is giving props to the clip, comparing it to Janet Jackson’s “Control.” “When I got the record, I most definitely knew she was going to another level and I was excited for her,” Ross told MTV News. “I love to see the creative side. She’s a sexy female and I think she showed that. When I think of Janet Jackson when I was coming up and she was doing her Control thing, I loved it. So if that’s the feeling that young people [are getting] or whoever is feeling the music, if that’s the inspiration they get, I think it’s dope.” “The Way You Love Me” premiered online last week and immediately drew attention for its explicit lyrics and the limited amount of clothing — bikini and boots — Hilson wore. Directed by veteran choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson (Diddy’s “Making the Band”), the NSFW video made some fans cry foul over Hilson’s unladylike moves. Others, meanwhile, praised the singer for her forward-thinking boldness. In an interview with gossip hound Perez Hilton, Hilson defended the “The Way You Love Me” clip, calling the video “racy” but in line with the perspective of her forthcoming album. “You know what? If you put it in context with my album, my album is called No Boys Allowed but really it means no bullsh– allowed,” she said. “In this album, I was screaming in a room — just like I was screaming in the song — I was screaming in a room with all my girlfriends, yelling all the sh– we really say.” No Boys Allowed hits stores on December 21. Nicki Minaj Debuts Some Dance Moves In VMA Rehearsal

‘Making the Band’ choreographer backs up Young Money queen for pre-show performance. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj at her VMA pre-show rehearsal on Saturday Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News LOS ANGELES — Nicki Minaj is so popular right now she can shut down the scene anywhere she goes. On Saturday (September 11), her fans who happened to be downtown got a big surprise as Nick rehearsed her VMA pre-show performance , practicing “Your Love” and her brand-new single with Will I Am, “Check It Out.” Although Nicki’s performance was outside, fans, members of her entourage, various MTV crewmembers and anyone sitting in one of the J.W. Marriott hotel’s lounges could see Nick go to work. “Get it! Get it!” veteran choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson — who MTV viewers will remember from Diddy’s “Making the Band” — yelled after every Minaj “ow ow!” at the beginning of “Check It Out.” “Get it, girl!” Gibson encouraged again. Two female dancers started in front of the crowd and grooved to “Your Love,” then there was a reveal of the Young Money queen, who stood with her head down and arms folded. Wearing a pink tank top, black leather jacket and black leggings, Minaj moved forward and danced in sync with her backup ladies. Expect plenty of movement and plenty of energy come Sunday night. Nicki — who’s known for her lyrical acumen and facial expressions (she made those faces in rehearsal too!), but not for dancing — can hold down some steps. “Amaaaazing,” Gibson yelled at the end of another run-through. There were a few mechanical problems with a key piece of equipment for the stage that’s also an integral part of Nick’s reveal. However, the crew seemed to have the matter under control toward the end of rehearsal. During her last practice round, Nicki and her dancers switched up the entire beginning of the show. Instead of just playing “Your Love,” Nicki went right into “Check It Out.” There was also smoke that time and more applause from Nick’s biggest cheerleader today, Laurie Ann. After the rehearsal, Nicki walked through the lobby taking pictures and even giving a couple of hugs to fans. “Oh my God. She is so real!” one lady said after taking a pic with Nicki. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Sandra Bullock Finalizes Divorce From Jesse James

Papers were filed in Texas formally ending the five-year marriage. By Jocelyn Vena Jesse James and Sandra Bullock Photo: Jordan Strauss/ WireImage After her split from Jesse James earlier this year, Sandra Bullock has finalized her divorce from her husband of nearly five years. According to UsMagazine.com , the pair filed sealed papers last week in Texas to finalize their divorce. The papers were filed in Travis County Court in Austin, where Bullock currently lives and where James reportedly plans to move to be near his ex-wife, who is close with his three children from previous relationships. TMZ reports that in original documents filed on April 23, Bullock claimed that her marriage to James “has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.” She can now continue adopting her son, Louis, as a single parent. The news comes hot on the heels of several high-profile appearances by Bullock. She appeared at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards , the MTV Movie Awards and just last week at the star-studded Nashville Rising benefit show. Back in April when Bullock sat down with People to talk about her split from James, she said that she was now focused on raising her son and that her relationship with her future ex-husband is “a different one. A bittersweet one. One of new understanding. One of support for his recovery. One that changed my life.” Though she is adopting Louis as a single parent, she said she hopes that he can still have a great dad like she’s seen James be to his own three kids. “I really don’t know how our paths will intersect in the future,” she said. The Band From TV ‘Take Over’ Chicago

TV stars-turned-charity-rockers Greg Grunberg, Bob Guiney talk to MTV News before series of gigs. By Tami Katzoff Band From TV plays gigs in Chicago with “House” star Hugh Laurie Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — The fun started on Friday at Chicago’s Harry Caray’s Tavern, as the star of TV’s “House,” Hugh Laurie, introduced Band From TV in his distinctively gravelly British accent. “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, friends, acquaintances, lovers, fighters, tax attorneys, pickpockets and hockey fans … for your entertainment, edification and sheer shuddering pleasure: Band From TV!” Laurie bellowed. The concert kicked off a blitz of weekend gigs in Chicago by the band of musicians who also happen to appear regularly on your TV screen. The group, which plays for charity, is made up of Laurie and TV stars Greg Grunberg (“Heroes”), James Denton (“Desperate Housewives”), Jesse Spencer (“House”), Adrian Pasdar (“Heroes”), Bob Guiney (“The Bachelor,” “GSN: Live”) and Scott Grimes (“ER”). Performing rock-and-roll covers, the band played the Windy City steakhouse on Navy Pier on Friday, continuing the next day with a show on the main stage in Grant Park, as part of the Taste of Chicago event. The same night, they played another gig at the Vic Theatre (this show benefitting the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago). They wrapped up on Sunday with a short set before a Cubs/ White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field. “Yeah, Band From TV is basically taking over Chicago. It’s pretty crazy,” said drummer Greg Grunberg, who stars in the upcoming NBC comedy “Love Bites.” A founding member, Grunberg first met Laurie in 2006 when he was cast in guest-starring role on an episode of the Fox medical drama “House.” “He’s such a wonderful guy,” Grunberg told MTV News of his bandmate when we caught up by phone a few weeks before their series of shows. “And I knew he had played music because I followed his career, all the British comedy stuff that he did, and [in] a lot of the sketch comedy he did back there, he would do musical numbers.” Grunberg was already playing around Los Angeles in a garage band, so the two actors got together to jam. James Denton soon joined the group, followed by lead vocalist Bob Guiney, who met Grunberg at a charity event. “Greg was like, ‘Hey, I’m going to jam with some friends, why don’t you come?” Guiney recalled. “So I go to the rehearsal space … and in walks James Denton, and then in walks Hugh Laurie. And this is the first time I’m meeting these guys. And we immediately hit it off.” Two weeks later the band played its first gig, opening in L.A. for Mick Fleetwood and Macy Gray — and Band From TV was born. Guiney added, “We got such great feedback from it that we were like, ‘Let’s keep this going, this is fun.’ Eventually more actors were added to the mix, Grunberg explained. “Hugh brought in Jesse Spencer from ‘House,’ I brought in Adrian from ‘Heroes,’ … before I knew, it we had this band.” Scott Grimes was a recent addition, and the band often brings in special guests — mostly other TV actors — to perform at various shows. While audiences might go in expecting something less than top-notch from these TV stars-turned-rockers, Band From TV are the real deal. They bring some professional musicians and backup singers onstage for extra support and the result is a polished sound. “We see the jaws drop when we come out because people expect us to fall flat on our face, or sound like every other ‘actor band,’ ” Grunberg said. “But we’re really pretty tight.” Laurie seems to be the virtuoso of the group. At the Chicago gigs, he played piano while singing Ray Charles’ “Mary Ann” and later grabbed a mandolin for Pasdar’s rendition of Charlie Robison’s “John O’Reilly.” “The guy is the best musician I’ve ever met in my life. And it’s amazing because he’s so completely humble about it,” Guiney, who had a career in music before he ever appeared on TV, said of Laurie. Because they’re on television, the bandmembers must work rehearsals and performances into already hectic working schedules. And it’s more than the love of music that drives them: The money made from shows — as well as their 2008 CD/DVD, Hoggin’ All the Covers — is divided among the actors’ favorite charities. “It just takes a lot of effort,” Grunberg said. “But we enjoy it so much and the end result is, in the last four years we’ve given away over $2 million in charity, so it’s worth it.” Their only Chicago gig with an admission price was Saturday night’s show at the Vic. Grunberg is the official spokesperson for the National Epilepsy Foundation and the cause is personal to him. “My oldest son has epilepsy and he actually had brain surgery at Rush [University] Medical Center in Chicago. The doctors at Rush Medical Center basically saved my son’s life, and I really wanted to do something special for Chicago.” Judging by the near-ecstatic reaction of their fans, Chicago did indeed get something special.
