For the first time in the 17-year history of The X Games, a participant has passed away due to injuries suffered in an accident. The family of snowmobile rider Caleb Moore confirmed today that the 25-year old died as a result of bleeding around his brain and heart, problems that arose after a horrific crash on January 24 in Aspen. “He will be truly missed and never forgotten,” Moore’s family said in a statement. “The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for all the prayers and support they have received from all the fans, friends and family around the world that Caleb has inspired.” Moore was the first individual to perform in the freestyle competition on the day he crashed. It’s believed he fell short on a rotation and was knocked off his vehicle, with the skis of the sled landing on top of him as he tumbled down the ramp. Said host network ESPN in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by Caleb Moore’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Wade and Michelle, his brother, Colten, and the entire Moore family. He will be remembered for his natural passion for life and his deep love for his family and friends, and he will always be an inspiration to everyone he touched in the action sports community. As a result of this accident we will conduct a thorough review of this discipline and adopt any appropriate changes to future X Games.”
