Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii has died at age 88 after battling a respiratory illness, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Monday. Inouye won the Medal of Honor in World War II—a conflict that cost him his right arm—and later became the first Japanese-American House member and then senator. His last word was “Aloha,” his office said. “I rise with a real heavy heart. Our friend Dan Inouye just died,” Reid said in an emotional tribute. “His commitment to our nation w
Serena Williams Wins Olympic Gold Medal For Women’s Singles Tennis And another win for Serena Williams ! Homegirl killed it in the Olympics final Saturday against Maria Sharapova, crushing the Russian on the world stage. Serena Williams became only the second woman to complete a career Golden Slam, winning the most lopsided women’s final in Olympic history Saturday by beating Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1. The victory completed a remarkable run of domination by the No. 4-seeded Williams, who lost only 17 games in six matches en route to her first singles gold medal. She went 13-0 this summer at the All England Club, where she won her fifth Wimbledon title a month ago. The career Golden Slam was first achieved by Steffi Graf, who did it when she won at the Olympics in 1988 after sweeping all four major titles. Williams can add the gold medal to her 14 Grand Slam singles championships, the most of any active woman. And she’s not done in London. Williams and her sister Venus, pursuing their third gold in doubles, were scheduled to play in the semifinals later Saturday. It took the No. 3-seeded Sharapova 45 minutes to win a game, and by then she trailed 6-0, 3-0. Williams dominated with her serve and repeatedly blasted winners from the baseline, taking a big swing with almost every stroke despite gusty conditions on Centre Court. The wind was so strong it blew the U.S. flag off its pole during the medal ceremony. When Sharapova wasn’t lunging or whiffing as the ball whizzed past, she was caught off-balance trying to block back shots at her feet. Williams finished with 10 aces, 24 winners and only seven unforced errors. Sharapova completed a career Grand Slam in June by winning the French Open, but Williams beat her for the eighth consecutive time. The most one-sided previous women’s final was in 1920, when Suzanne Lenglen of France beat Dorothy Holman of Britain 6-3, 6-0. When Williams closed out the victory with her 60th ace of the tournament, she let out a long scream. After shaking hands with Sharapova, Williams hopped a dozen times on the grass she loves, waved and then hopped some more. Williams was still jumping about as she put on her Team USA jacket for the medal ceremony. Then she began to dance. We love it that she busted out the cripwalk… Congrats Serena! Black girls are rocking the Olympics BIGTIME. Peep her dance below: Gotta love the GIF! Source GettyImages
SMDH … As owner of A-Z Outlet in Holland, Bryan Vandenbosch has purchased a lot of electronics, jewelry, and tools, but after almost 19 years in business, he bought something he never expected — a Purple Heart, a medal awarded to U.S. soldiers wounded in battle. This one was earned in Afghanistan in May 2010. “(The soldier had) been in here the week (before Thanksgiving),” says Vandenbosch. “He brought it in the following week, I purchased it from him, and put it on display.” Vandenbosch says the active duty solider, on leave from Afghanistan, was reluctant to sell the medal at first, but like a lot of people, he needed a little extra cash for the holiday season. So, the soldier gave up one of his two Purple Hearts — something he almost gave his life to get. As word began to spread about the medal, Vandenbosch says the phone has been ringing off the hook with people wanting to help. “I have people that have walked in already this morning that have asked me `hey, how much did you pay for it? I’ll pay for it so he can get it back,’” he says. One of those people is Garrett Vanderduim, a Vietnam veteran. “A purple heart is a treasured thing among service guys, and it stands for a lot,” explains Vanderduim. “I thought it would be a good thing to help out, especially during Christmas time.” But the medal is not for sale, and the store owner says he’ll keep it safe until the soldier decides to come back. “(In case) the gentleman wants it, it’s never going to be sold,” he says. Now, nestled between diamond earrings and a gold watch lies the military medal. It’s quite a sight for Carlos Mendez, who was born in Cuba, and doesn’t take his rights as an American for granted. “When I see something like that it’s just awesome that somebody is willing to go out there and defend our freedom,” Mendez says. Many items in the pawn shop have a story; from the green leather suit that gave a woman enough money to leave an abusive marriage, to a musical instrument that paid for cancer treatments, but the story behind each Purple Heart is one that affects every American. “It means the ultimate sacrifice for your country,” Vanderduim says. “(The soldier was) wounded, you can’t get much closer to the end than that.” This says so much about us as a country and the things and people we value most… Source
President Obama flubbed his remarks to troops at Fort Drum Thursday, when he told the US Army’s 10th Mountain Division about the time he awarded the first Medal of Honor to someone not receiving it posthumously. The medal, he said, went to Jared Monti. The only issue is that Jared Monti died in service, and did in fact receive the medal posthumously. Military Times believes Obama may have confused… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The Blaze Discovery Date : 24/06/2011 01:28 Number of articles : 2
They keep coming — horrific examples of bad behavior by the TSA during pat-downs and body scans. The lastest: A bladder cancer survivor was soaked by his own urine after a TSA agent broke the man's urostomy bag. “I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me,” said the passenger, Thomas Sawyer. “Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants. They never apologized. They acted like they hadn’t seen what happened. But I know they saw it because I had a wet mark. I am totally appalled by the fact that agents that are performing these pat-downs have so little concern for people with medical conditions.” From 3-year-old girls to nursing moms and now cancer patients, the TSA is racking up some major PR disasters, and they're heartbreaking, and they're infuriating, and there needs to be some additional sensitivity training, clearly. While a divided nation last Tuesday finally rallied around one bright shining moment of patriotic glory — President Obama's awarding of the Medal of Honor to Afghan hero Army Sgt. Salvatore Giunta — a popular right-wing Christian commentator sharply split opinions even within his own camp. He blasted the award as “feminized” because it honors Giunta for saving his comrades rather than killing the enemy. The Army's official citation details how Giunta “exposed himself to withering enemy fire” during a daring effort to engage the enemy and extract his wounded comrades from an ambush. But Bryan Fischer, a columnist for the American Family Association who has often provoked headlines and consternation with his commentaries, read the narrative as hardly the sort of thing American soldiers were once known for. President Obama awards Medal of Honor to Army Sgt. Salvatore Giunta”When we think of heroism in battle, we used the think of our boys storming the beaches of Normandy under withering fire, climbing the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc while enemy soldiers fired straight down on them, and tossing grenades into pill boxes to take out gun emplacements,” wrote Fischer, director of issue analysis for the AFA, a longtime lobby on the Christian right. “That kind of heroism has apparently become pass
