REVIEW: ‘Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning’ Is ‘Apocalypse Pow!’ With Van Damme In Kurtz Role

Not so much a traditional sequel as a hallucinogenic riff on an entire franchise, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning   plays like the fevered fantasy of a die-hard genre fan who requires only the haziest sort of dream logic to connect extended sequences of hand-to-hand, foot-to-ass, machete-to-arm and bullet-to-head combat. There’s something perversely fascinating about helmer John Hyams’ freewheeling yet deliberately paced mashup of noirish mystery, splatter-movie intensity, first-person-shooter vidgame and Apocalypse Now -style surrealism. But it’s questionable whether the pic will develop anything larger than a cult following when Magnet unleashes it as a late-fall VOD and theatrical release. Franchise mainstays Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren are back in action as UniSols, genetically enhanced and fantastically resilient bionic commandos. But they serve more or less as supporting players here, while most of  Day of Reckoning focuses on Brit martial artist/action-pic thesp Scott Adkins as John, a fuzzily defined family man who awakens from a nine-month coma with jumbled memories of having witnessed brutal home invaders kill his wife and young daughter. Left with amnesia, John remembers only one thing with vivid clarity: The leader of the killers was a fearsome fellow identified by a helpful FBI agent (Rus Blackwell) as Luc Devereaux (Van Damme). Devereaux, the agent explains while questioning John, used to work for the government, and now is classified as a deserter. But Devereaux himself more likely would call himself a messiah. With the help of comrade Andrew Scott (Lundgren), the seemingly indestructible special op has been methodically recruiting and deprogramming other UniSols, freeing them of control by government-employed overlords and readying them for revenge. John repeatedly encounters an especially ferocious deprogrammed UniSol (Andrei Arlovski) while following a trail of clues that might lead to info about Devereaux — and, just as important, about John’s own forgotten past. Of course, this being a genre pic, that trail brings him to a topless bar, where he meets a beautiful dancer (Mariah Bonner) who claims to know him. Then things get really weird. Hyams and co-scripters Doug Magnuson and Jon Greenhalgh reference a wide range of sources throughout, with Blade Runner and Apocalypse Now being only their most obvious influences. (That Van Damme is made to resemble a leaner, meaner Col. Kurtz certainly isn’t coincidental.) There’s also a plot twist on loan from a classic Twilight Zone segment in which George Grizzard played another man trying to solve the puzzle of his past. To their credit, however, the filmmakers make mostly clever use of their borrowings, and they play fair: That surprise twist is signaled early on by clues hidden in plain sight. In any event, the twisty storyline serves primarily as an excuse to get the aud from one long stretch of mayhem to the next. Adkins may not be the most emotionally expressive of actors, but his formidable physicality serves him well during impressive action scenes that are additionally enhanced by the extra depth of field provided by 3D lensing. The grand finale is a series of what appear to be single-take sequences of bone-breaking, bullet-blasting violence, almost all of it presented with a practical-effects, minimal-CGI approach bound to impress genre devotees. Better still, the climax allows Lundgren to exuberantly deliver a line that, in this context, comes off as the pic’s only moment of comic relief. Even in their limited screen time, Lundgren and Van Damme demonstrate that you can teach old dogs new kicks. Other supporting players, including Arlovski, a Belarusian mixed-martial-arts champ, are adequate to the tasks at hand. For the record, Day of Reckoning is the fourth pic in a series that began with 1992’s Universal Soldier (directed by Roland Emmerich), and continued with Universal Soldier: The Return (1999) and Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009), which was also directed by Hyams and went direct to video in the U.S. There were two unrelated cable spinoffs ( Universal Solider II: Brothers in Arms and Universal Solider III: Unfinished Business , both toplining Matt Battaglia) that have evidently joined the ranks of Exorcist II: The Heretic ,” Jaws 3-D and just about every Halloween pic between Halloween II and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later as sequels that true fans like to pretend never existed. FANTASTIC FEST: Silly, Serious Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning At Least Makes A Star Out Of Scott Adkins

The new Universal Soldier picture, the latest in the series about genetically-modified supermen raging against their government creators, is a curious exercise in cognitive dissonance; here you have an action flick high on gory, bone-crunching slicing and dicing and kicking and punching — everything star and Ben Affleck doppelganger Scott Adkins ( Undisputed II and III ) can possibly do to evoke oohs and aahs in 3-D in the serious-faced, beefy fashion of his ’80s and ’90s predecessors — and yet director John Hyams didn’t sound completely delusional this week at Fantastic Fest when he said his UniSol fourquel was influenced by David Cronenberg, Michael Haneke, and (yes, I see it, kinda!) even art house provocateur Gaspar Noe. Stylistically these references are obvious, even if they add little to the overarching point of Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning 3D . Hyams opens with a neat, tricksy sequence that sets up the plot (and makes the best use of 3-D) through the first-person POV of family man John (Adkins); forced to watch as masked intruders murder his wife and child, we see through John’s eyes as he’s beaten to near-death, the only lasting clue left in his brain being the stone-faced mug of Jean-Claude Van Damme (reprising his role as veteran UniSol Luc Deveraux). When John comes to in a hospital recovery bed with nothing but the lingering memory of that night, he sets out to put the missing puzzle pieces together, which leads him to a strip club and a dancer (Mariah Bonner) who seems to know him. Meanwhile, an agent nicknamed The Plumber (Belarusian MMA fighter Andrei Arlovsky) is activated to wipe out his own kind but is re-educated by a swaggering, confident ex-UniSol ( Dolph Lundren ) bent on spreading the gospel of his boss — Van Damme as cult figure, not a crazy stretch — who seeks to build an army of disgruntled Unisols into raging against The Man. Few elements of the Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning script make much sense (John’s line of vengeance-logic; The Plumber’s proclivity for wearing his plumber uniform everywhere he goes ), and the film meanders through some interminably long, wannabe noir-ish plot stretches to set up reasons for its stars to brawl and, y’know, grow back severed body parts. But Hyams satisfies where it matters — in his slashing, limb-severing, body-pounding action, and the physically impressive Adkins, a stunt performer turned leading man. Saddled with the tough job of playing a vacant-eyed man-machine with no memories and a vague sense of self, Adkins at least comes alive when he’s in his element. (A seemingly seamless single-shot sequence — beautifully and brutally choreographed, though stitched together via subtle CG movie magic — is one for the highlight reel.) Notably, Adkins, Van Damme, and Lundgren turn in far more compelling work than they did in their last film together, Expendables 2 , though maybe that’s not saying much. Van Damme, gloriously off-kilter in that picture, is a study of coiled restraint in Oreo cookie Apocalypse Now face paint; Lundgren might be at his career best – again, perhaps not saying much. In the least, and most significantly, Day of Reckoning should propel British martial artist/stunt veteran Adkins out of the niche genre world — action cinema’s Adkins diet? Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning hits VOD October 25, followed by a theatrical run November 30. Read more from Fantastic Fest . Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Recession Is TOO Real: Injured Afghanistan War Vet Forced To Pawn Purple Heart Medal For Christmas Money

SMDH … As owner of A-Z Outlet in Holland, Bryan Vandenbosch has purchased a lot of electronics, jewelry, and tools, but after almost 19 years in business, he bought something he never expected — a Purple Heart, a medal awarded to U.S. soldiers wounded in battle. This one was earned in Afghanistan in May 2010. “(The soldier had) been in here the week (before Thanksgiving),” says Vandenbosch. “He brought it in the following week, I purchased it from him, and put it on display.” Vandenbosch says the active duty solider, on leave from Afghanistan, was reluctant to sell the medal at first, but like a lot of people, he needed a little extra cash for the holiday season. So, the soldier gave up one of his two Purple Hearts — something he almost gave his life to get. As word began to spread about the medal, Vandenbosch says the phone has been ringing off the hook with people wanting to help. “I have people that have walked in already this morning that have asked me `hey, how much did you pay for it? I’ll pay for it so he can get it back,’” he says. One of those people is Garrett Vanderduim, a Vietnam veteran. “A purple heart is a treasured thing among service guys, and it stands for a lot,” explains Vanderduim. “I thought it would be a good thing to help out, especially during Christmas time.” But the medal is not for sale, and the store owner says he’ll keep it safe until the soldier decides to come back. “(In case) the gentleman wants it, it’s never going to be sold,” he says. Now, nestled between diamond earrings and a gold watch lies the military medal. It’s quite a sight for Carlos Mendez, who was born in Cuba, and doesn’t take his rights as an American for granted. “When I see something like that it’s just awesome that somebody is willing to go out there and defend our freedom,” Mendez says. Many items in the pawn shop have a story; from the green leather suit that gave a woman enough money to leave an abusive marriage, to a musical instrument that paid for cancer treatments, but the story behind each Purple Heart is one that affects every American. “It means the ultimate sacrifice for your country,” Vanderduim says. “(The soldier was) wounded, you can’t get much closer to the end than that.” This says so much about us as a country and the things and people we value most… Source
