So, the police just hunted Kimani down… for no reason? Huffpo A candlelight vigil to mourn a 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police turned violent Monday evening, as frustrated attendees threw bottles at cops, broke shop windows and looted a Rite Aid, officials and sources said. The 7 p.m. vigil started with heartfelt remembrances of Kimani Gray — who was shot and killed by two police officers in East Flatbush Saturday night after he allegedly pointed a .38 caliber pistol at them — but soon some of the teens at the vigil grew violent and began throwing trash cans, people who attended the event said. By 8:30 p.m., “a large, disorderly group [began] throwing bottles at police” at Church Avenue and East 48th Street, a few blocks from the vigil, an NYPD source said. As riot police filled the streets, the crowd also surged into the Rite Aid on Church Avenue near Albany Street and trashed it about 9:15 p.m., pulling items off the shelves and attacking the store manager, clerks and security guard, the FDNY said. The group stole some items from the store and cash from the register, sources said. One man who had been assaulted and was bleeding from the head was rushed to Kings County Hospital in unknown condition, the FDNY said. Some surrounding shop windows were smashed, sources said, as were the windows of a B35 bus, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said, adding that no one connected with the bus was hurt. huffingtonpost
NBC’s Meet the Press and host David Gregory are being investigated by officials after his display of a high capacity gun magazine on television Sunday. Some reports say Gregory was cleared by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to show the weapon on television (below). Others aren’t so sure. Ironically, Gregory’s display took place during an interview with the NRA President on Meet the Press , in which gun laws and gun safety were debated. If anything, he was making a point about the power and danger of such weapons during a gun control debate of sorts – not flashing it for any other purpose. In fielding NBC’s inquiry about the magazine, an ATF official contacted the D.C. police to find out if the District of Columbia had a law prohibiting such a display. The D.C. police official concluded David could legally show the magazine, provided it was empty, and told the ATF, who gave Meet the Press the green light. However, it appears district police are now conflicted about their own answer. Wayne LaPierre on Meet the Press D.C. police released a statement today, saying “NBC contacted the Metropolitan Police Dept. inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for this segment.” “NBC was informed that it was not permissible and the request was denied.” Basically, David Gregory is currently being investigated for displaying the magazine, despite apparently trying successfully to have the display cleared. Elmo impersonators roaming New York are nothing new, but one going off on racist tirades – ranting horrifically about Jews while harassing tourists – certainly is. The NYPD was forced to remove a man wearing the familiar furry, red Elmo costume from Times Square after he exploded into an obscenity-laced rant. It’s less funny and more scary than it sounds. In between posing for photos and harassing tourists for tips, the offending Elmo would go off on xenophobic and anti-Semitic tirades for some reason. The man, whose name was not released because he was not arrested, was taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center for a psychological evaluation. The man would shout “crazy stuff” about the other impersonators, said one witness, adding that people tried to keep a wary distance from Elmo. One can certainly see why. An enormous mushroom cloud over Beijing, China late last week, sparked fears that some kind of cataclysmic, Armageddon-like event was underway. Turns out it was just nature at work. The giant cumulonimbus cloud formation spanned several miles. Accompanied by late day lightning, it swallowed up the capital’s skyline for an hour. Photographers and videographers documented the ominous-looking formation, which gradually took the shape of an atomic bomb. British police are investigating David Nalbandian for injuring a linesman while kicking an advertising board during Sunday’s tennis final at Queen’s Club. Officials ruled that the Argentine had to default the match to Marin Cilic after smashing the sign – and the lineman’s legs behind it – with his right foot. Judge Andrew McDougal could be seen cringing in pain as the player sent part of the sign flying into his leg. Nalbandian was leading 7-6, 3-4 at the time but was forced to default the match. What’s more, criminal charges may be in the offing. “We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships on June 17,” a Scotland Yard spokesman said. “A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan police service is investigating the incident.
