Remind us never to go to Coney Island Hospital . Man Dies From Botched Blood Transfusion According to The NY Post There’s bad blood at Coney Island Hospital — and it’s deadly. A 40-year-old male patient died at the city-run hospital last week after receiving the wrong type blood during a transfusion, The Post has learned. Transfusions that don’t match a patient’s blood type — giving Type-A to a person who is Type-B, for example — causes the body to attack the new red blood cells, a violent and painful reaction that can lead to shock and a fatal kidney shutdown. “The blood was mislabeled in the lab. It wasn’t a nursing issue,” said one hospital professional who spoke yesterday on condition of anonymity. “It shouldn’t have happened. It’s just carelessness. “It’s a huge problem,” he added. A source said the fatal error occurred in the hospital’s sixth-floor lab, where blood drawn from patients is screened and “typed.” A technician labeled the patient’s blood as the wrong type, and the patient was given the wrong blood during a transfusion. Yesterday the lab was shuttered. Blood for Coney Island Hospital patients is now being typed by technicians at Kings County Hospital Center, with the results then phoned in to Coney Island. Coney Island continues to maintain its own stores of banked blood, and surgeries and ER treatment have not been curtailed. Still, emergency-surgery patients are for now all being given Type-O blood, because it can be used universally. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family . . . We are working with the state to resolve the situation as quickly as possible,” said Ian Michaels, spokesman for the city Health and Hospitals Corporation. We feel for his family. Woman Sexually Abused Four Boys According to Mail Online A 38-year-old woman was arrested twice for allegedly sexually assaulting four young boys at her Virginia home after her boyfriend bought them alcohol. Police alleged Crystal McBride abused the four boys, who were reportedly friends with her teenage child, at her Waverly Drive, Virginia Beach, home on two separate occasions. Her boyfriend James Owens Jr, 39, allegedly bought alcohol for the boys who were aged between 13 and 14. The couple is allegedly known for entertaining teenage boys at alcohol-fueled parties at their home. Police say McBride had sex with two children and performed sexual favors on two others on two separate occasions in May and June. Another three boys at the house may also have been abused, according to police. WAVY.com reports one of the boys’ mothers called Virginia Beach Police Department’s Special Victims Unit claiming her son had been sexually abused by a woman known to the family. Neighbors reacted with horror to the news, shocked that a mother in their area would prey on young boys. Michele Paciello, who used to be friends with McBride, said she did not appreciate how the woman acted around her teenage son. ‘I look back now and I’m not surprised,’ she told wtkr.com. ‘But I’m still like is this really happening. ‘I just didn’t think it was appropriate for a 30-year-old woman to dress like that and act very flirtatious and going a little overboard sometimes and that’s when I kind of eased my way out of the friendship.’ Jon Tari, who knows the couple and lives nearby, said: ‘They seemed like nice people. Shocked.’ The couple was arrested on Wednesday – although McBride was arrested a second time on Thursday after further allegations emerged – and have now been released on bond. McBride faces four counts of custodial Indecent liberties, three counts of carnal knowledge, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. 8 People Shot And Injured At Brooklyn House Party So much for NY’s gun control law… Via NY 1: Police are investigating after eight people were shot and injured early this morning at a house party in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Police say four men and four women were shot at a barbecue on Clarendon Road and East 52nd Street just before 1 a.m. Investigators say the shooter crashed the party, opened fire and ran off. “Of course I was scared, I ran in my house. I saw the helicopter, I said ‘I’m going to follow the helicopter and I saw the police go ‘Wooo’ coming up. I don’t know,” said one onlooker. A teenage girl originally listed in critical condition has been upgraded to stable at Brookdale Hospital. Huffpo A candlelight vigil to mourn a 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police turned violent Monday evening, as frustrated attendees threw bottles at cops, broke shop windows and looted a Rite Aid, officials and sources said. The 7 p.m. vigil started with heartfelt remembrances of Kimani Gray — who was shot and killed by two police officers in East Flatbush Saturday night after he allegedly pointed a .38 caliber pistol at them — but soon some of the teens at the vigil grew violent and began throwing trash cans, people who attended the event said. By 8:30 p.m., “a large, disorderly group [began] throwing bottles at police” at Church Avenue and East 48th Street, a few blocks from the vigil, an NYPD source said. As riot police filled the streets, the crowd also surged into the Rite Aid on Church Avenue near Albany Street and trashed it about 9:15 p.m., pulling items off the shelves and attacking the store manager, clerks and security guard, the FDNY said. The group stole some items from the store and cash from the register, sources said. One man who had been assaulted and was bleeding from the head was rushed to Kings County Hospital in unknown condition, the FDNY said. Some surrounding shop windows were smashed, sources said, as were the windows of a B35 bus, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said, adding that no one connected with the bus was hurt. huffingtonpost
Don’t be surprised if she ask, “where the cash at?” Seventeen people and five “corporations” connected to a New York City escort service were indicted in Brooklyn Wednesday, charged with running a high-price prostitution and drug ring. The alleged racket earned more than $7 million in three years, catering to high-rolling customers who could drop more than $10,000 a night, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. The 144-count indictment includes allegations of enterprise corruption, promoting prostitution, money laundering, and criminal sale of a controlled substance against High Class NY, an escort service based in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn. Among the individuals named in the documents are High Class NY’s owners: Mikhail Yampolsky; his wife, Bronislava; a son, Alexander; and a stepson, Jonathan Yampolskaya. Eleven High Class NY managers and two of the escort service’s largest financial investors, Efim Gorelik and Yakov Maystrovich, also are indicted. They could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. “We are not going to run from this. We intend to fight these charges,” said Joseph Mure, attorney for Yampolskaya and the younger Yampolsky. The attorney’s in charge of the indictment seem to think this case has legs but we’re not so sure… Escorts, called “models,” were required to sign employment contracts prohibiting sexual contact with clients in an effort to mask the illegal nature of the business, the indictment says. “There is no such thing as a high-class pimp, and as we do with all other pimps, my office will prosecute these defendants and seek the maximum sentences available under the law,” said District Attorney Charles J. Hynes. Faizon Love laid hands on somebody late Thursday night… or maybe Friday morning… no one is sure who it was or exactly what happened. But as of yesterday morning, he was still in jail. Then yesterday, he bailed himself out and went back to work as if nothing had ever happened. Faizon Love bailed out of a Seattle jail Saturday afternoon and went straight to a comedy club where he was the scheduled headliner, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. The funnyman – famous for roles in Elf and Couple’s Retreat – was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence by Seattle cops early Friday morning. Love was released from the Kings County Jail at 4.01pm Saturday and the popular comedy venue, The Parlor, confirmed to us that he will be performing at 7:30 pm. 31-year-old accused of killing his mother with a sword in their Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment. The 31-year-old Brea stands accused of holding his mother hostage and then slaying her with a 3-foot-long sword. Citing police sources, the New York Daily News reports that Brea was convinced his mother was possessed by Satan and that he yelled such statements as “Sinner! Sinner!” and “You never accepted Jesus” as neighbors listened in horror early Tuesday morning. Neighbors in his Prospect Heights apartment eventually called the police. “I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he’s just saying a bunch of [Bible] passages like ‘Repent, Repent, Repent,’ ” neighbor Gregory Clare told New York’s WPIX . “I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream, and so I have my father call the cops, call 911.” Officers responding to the call reportedly encountered an extremely bloody scene and the butchered body of Brea’s mother. Brea himself was said to be clutching a bible and a sword (initial reports claimed it was a samurai sword, but the Daily News now says it was a Masonic ceremonial sword). The actor was aggressive and had to be Tasered before being placed on a stretcher and brought to Kings County Hospital for psychological evaluation. WPIX reports that neighbors described Brea and his mother as “quiet people,” and that Brea showed no previous indication of mental illness. The actor has had roles on “Ugly Betty” and, most recently, in this summer’s “Step Up 3D.”
