‘Behind the Bias’: Hannity Examines ‘Double Standards’ in American Media Coverage

Flashback: In 2009, Time Saw GOP As ‘Endangered Species’ Unless Party Moved Left

With all but one of the House races now resolved, Republicans have picked up at least 63 seats, the most in a midterm election since 1938. So, it might be fun on this Thanksgiving Day to recall how, just 18 months ago, Time's Michael Grunwald was arguing in a big cover story that demography and its “extremely conservative” philosophy meant the Republican Party could be on the verge of extinction. Back in May 2009, Newsbusters Brent Baker picked up on Grunwald's piece for the ridiculous way he painted the GOP as extremist: They are extremely conservative ideas tarred by association with the extremely unpopular George W. Bush, who helped downsize the party to its extremely conservative base. But re-reading the piece today, it's even more striking how Grunwald's “analysis” was based on liberal wishful thinking that small government conservative policies were like political arsenic, and how Republicans had to drop tax cuts and cultural conservatism if they ever hoped to come back from the wilderness. In other words, move left. But the GOP instead moved right, and was rewarded by voters. Which is why conservatives should probably not take strategic advice from their ideological adversaries in the media. read more

Nick Jonas, Jordin Sparks Launch Leadership Committee to Honor Reagan

It’s been nearly 100 years since the birth of former President Ronald Reagan, and the Gipper is still inspiring lives. What’s surprising is his latest fans weren’t born until after his presidency. Singers Nick Jonas and Jordin Sparks have joined forces as co-chairs for the National Youth Leadership Committee, a committee comprised of 38 prominent young athletes, musicians and student leaders. Age hasn’t stopped these members from being inspired by the life of the nation’s 40 th president – members of the group are all under the age of 25. According to a press release , the committee is partnering with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and will represent “America’s next generation of leaders” at the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration, which will kick off in Los Angeles on Feb. 5, 2011, the day before what would have been Reagan’s 100 th birthday. Jonas expressed his pride in being a part of the group. “My father and my family were supporters of Reagan,” he told the AP . Jonas also called Reagan a “personal hero” because of “the way he stood up for causes he believed were right, no matter what.” Sparks also spoke of Reagan as a model in her career, praising his “optimism” and “graciousness.” According to the Reagan Centennial website, Sparks said that being a part of the committee will enable her to “give back just a fraction of the blessings I’ve received.” Other recognizable members of the committee include Olympic gold-medalist gymnast Nastia Liukin, Indy car racer Marco Andretti, Olympic swimmer Katie Hoff, recording artist Jordan Pruitt and Chicago White Sox player Ross Wilson. While a group of influential young people honoring a president’s legacy on his birthday should seem laudable, USA Today’s David Jackson didn’t let his coverage of the committee go without downplaying Reagan’s legacy, calling the 100 th anniversary of his birth a “big political event next year (at least for conservatives).”

Bozell: The Price Is Right — Newsweek Only Worth $1

Managing Editor’s Note: NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell issued the following statement about The Washington Post Company selling Newsweek to the guy from RoboCop Sidney Harman, for a grand total of one dollar : There’s something entirely believable about the Newsweek sale.  A left-winger pretending to be centrist sold it to another left-winger pretending to be centrist. Newsweek is a dying magazine because no one wants to read their left-wing propaganda masquerading as ‘news.’ The $1 price tag, then, is probably just about right. For more information on the sale, read the NewsBusters’ story here .

CNN’s Kurtz & CBS’s Logan Miss the Point of MRC/NewsBusters Clip of Media Touting Obama’s ‘Brilliant’ Choice of Petraeus

On Sunday’s Reliable Sources on CNN, host Howard Kurtz played a clip that was posted both on NewsBusters and on NB’s parent organization the Media Research Center’s Web site showing that correspondents on several broadcast and news networks lavished excessive praise on President Obama by calling his decision to replace General Stanley McChrystal with General David Petraeus a “brilliant” decision. The CNN host played a portion of the clip which was played on Thursday’s The O’Reilly Factor on FNC. But, as he brought up the clip with guest Lara Logan of CBS News, Kurtz missed the point as he suggested that the MRC/NewsBusters was somehow complaining that the “liberal media are in love with David Petraeus and they’re falling into line,” when, in reality, the point was that since Petraeus is so obviously well qualified for the position, it hardly takes genius or “brilliance” to name him to the post. Logan, accepting Kurtz’s flawed premise, responded: “Well, if they had said it was a bad decision, then it would be ‘the liberal media hate David Petraeus and they’re not falling into line.’” She later concluded that the decision was, in fact, “brilliant” on Obama’s part: “The only way he had to ensure, to silence the critics and really to move on, this reassured the troops, this reassured the commanders, this reassured people who were in favor of it – the Afghans, the allies. That’s why people are calling it brilliant, maybe because it ‘was’ brilliant.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the June 27 Reliable Sources on CNN: HOWARD KURTZ: Bill O’Reilly, on his Fox News show, played a clip – some clips had been put together by the conservative Media Research Center, the Newsbusters site. I want to show that to you now. CHIP REID, CBS NEWS : Sounds like a pretty brilliant decision really. JIM MIKLASZEWSKI. NBC NEWS : This is nothing less than a stunning development, Brian, and, quite frankly, at a quick glance, almost brilliant. CHUCK TODD, NBC NEWS : Politically, in this town, it’s going to be seen as a brilliant choice by the President- WOLF BLITZER, CNN: -a very brilliant move to tap General Petraeus- KURTZ: So the suggestion is that the liberal media are in love with David Petraeus and they’re falling into line. LARA LOGAN, CBS NEWS: Well, if they had said it was a bad decision, then it would be “the liberal media hate David Petraeus and they’re not falling into line.” The one line is it’s very hard to find something wrong with this decision by the President because there was only one general in the United States Army who has the political weight and influence in Washington to survive this. Anyone else going into that position who wasn’t tested, who wasn’t proven, who didn’t have political connections, would have been a lame duck. They would have been able to do nothing. President Obama faced a serious choice here. Was his strategy going to die with General McChrystal? Because there’s a lot of opposition from very powerful people in Washington who want to move to a very different model of counterterrorism and not counterinsurgency. The only way he had to ensure, to silence the critics and really to move on, this reassured the troops, this reassured the commanders, this reassured people who were in favor of it – the Afghans, the allies. That’s why people are calling it brilliant, maybe because it “was” brilliant.
