New ‘Super 8’ Trailer’s Five Key Moments

We take a look at the most fascinating scenes featured in the new promo clip for the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed adventure film. By Eric Ditzian Photo: Paramount Pictures “What the hell?” says a boy at the very end of the first full-length trailer for “Super 8,” neatly summarizing our own thoughts about the footage from the mysterious action-adventure film: Um, what exactly did we just see? Well, what we saw, first off, was an incredibly effective promo clip courtesy of director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg. It managed to maintain the spirit of a teaser trailer — withholding far more information than is ever unleashed — while expanding our understanding of, and getting us seriously more excited about, what we’ll see in the flick when it hits theaters on June 10. Here are our picks for the new trailer’s five key moments: What Kind of Military Trucks Are Those? In we’d already seen the fiery train crash that unleashes some sort of very angry, possible very alien creature. So what we’re focused on here is what’s new, like those military trucks rolling through town with red cargo bins. What kind of military vehicles haul cargo like that? We see them pull right up to the train’s wreckage, so we’re guessing whatever is in them is important. As an Air Force leader, played by Noah Emmerich, says to Kyle Chandler’s local policeman, “I understand you have concerns about our cargo,” before telling him there’s nothing to worry about. Right … 9/11 … for Dogs? Though the film is set in 1979, there’s no mistaking the allusion to September 11, 2001, in this shot of missing-dog posters. Apparently, all the dogs hightailed it out of town after the train crash. Why is it that animals always seem to grasp potential sci-fi terror before humans? And what ever happened to man’s best friend, after all? That Looks Like It Hurts So dogs and people start to go missing. Things, no doubt, start to go from bad to worse. Just look at this bloody-faced guy who has a gun in his hand, a terrified look in his eyes, and one word of instruction: “Go!” This raises a question about “Super 8” that we’ve had for a while. Early reports seemed to suggest that this movie would be more of an alien-invasion film in the vein of “Cloverfield.” But most of the footage we’ve seen thus far gives an impression of something more akin to “E.T.” So which is it? Or is it both? In the new trailer, we definitely get a sense of a Spielberg-like focus on family-oriented fare, yet things clearly get very intense and very dangerous at some point. Boom! Boom! Throughout the trailer, we’ve seen how this alien presence can somehow manipulate electricity and exert a telekinetic power on objects. Here we see a prime example of that ability, as the local electronics store goes boom. At others points, power lines explode, a bus tips over, and, well, it’s all leading to… Look, Up in the Sky The most eye-popping scene in the entire trailer comes at nearly the very end. Main Street is trashed, the citizenry is freaked out and the military is nowhere to be seen as vehicles rise up into the air. The kids (portrayed by Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning) — both looking very much like characters from “E.T.,” he Elliot, she Gertie — take in the craziness. Like in “E.T.,” it seems that only the children fully understand the implications of what’s actually going on. For example: No one believes a man in the hospital, for instance, who claims to have seen the creature … except the boy. As he tells the man, “I believe you.” What are your favorite moments in the new “Super 8” teaser? Tell us in the comments. Hey guys, MTV News “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello here with everything you need to know about this week’s “Idol” in 60 seconds. [ Deep breath! ] This week, season 10 finally kicked off and everyone was excited … except for those two. [ Shot of Jimmy Iovine and Berry Gordy as the lone sitting ducks in an audience packed with screaming people on their feet. ] The top 13 performed songs from their personal idols, which included two dudes who were accused of raping children [ Jacob Lusk tackled R. Kelly, Thia Magia worshipped Michael Jackson ], one former heroin addict [ Paul McDonald’s Ryan Adams homage ] and Celine Dion?! Ugh! But this ain’t your grandma’s “Idol.” Jimmy Iovine was added to the show to make the songs sound contemporary! [ Clip of the lame lite-jazz arrangement Thia Megia was saddled with. ] Oh, but we have a new judging panel. They brought their A-game, right?! [ Clip of J. Lo saying pitch doesn’t matter, clip of Steven Tyler name-checking International Women’s Day for no reason. ] [ Jim is disappointed. ] This is the remix?! It wasn’t all a wash, though. Paul McDonald did his best Gollum impression. Casey Abrams got high … praises. And admit it: You totally loved watching those two teenagers cry. [ Shots of Lauren Alaina and Thia Megia fighting back tears. ] But my favorite was Naima, who proved with “Umbrella” that she can dance … sort of, and she can rap … sort of, and she can sing … sor— OK, two out of three ain’t bad. On Wednesday night’s results show: Werrrrrk! [ Shot of Jacob Lusk being fierce in the group number. ] [ Clip: Pia Toscano sings the line, “I’m starting with a man in the mirror.” ] She is?! Werrrrrk! WERRRRRRRRRRRRK! [ Shot of Adam Lambert performing “Aftermath.” ] [ Clip of Adam telling J. Lo, “So I want you to teach me how to dougie.” ] OK, Adam, there’s no need to lie. And results! “You’re all safe except for you.” [ Shot of Karen Rodriguez’s awkward bottom three placement. ] “Just kidding, except not.” There’s your bottom tres. There’s your bottom two. And scene. Casey Abrams Hospitalized During ‘American Idol’ Results Show

‘I got some nice fresh blood in me and feeling better,’ finalist tweets. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” Finalist Casey Abrams Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There was a conspicuous absence on Thursday night’s “American Idol” elimination show, long before Ashthon Jones got booted out of the top 13. That didn’t happen until the end of the show. It was judges’ darling and bushy-bearded budding sex symbol Casey Abrams . After another impressive performance on Wednesday night, when he took on Joe Cocker’s version of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” the 19-year-old film-camp counselor was nowhere to be seen on the stage. Host Ryan Seacrest announced at the top of the show that Abrams was hospitalized for the second time this season and would not be joining his pals for the results broadcast. “You’ll notice that Casey is missing from the group. He is unfortunately sick and in the hospital right now,” Seacrest announced. “Wave to him. … We know you’re watching buddy, feel better — shout-out to the nurses. Get back here soon, OK?” While a spokesperson for “Idol” told MTV News that no further details were available on Abrams’ illness on Thursday night, the bass-playing singer tweeted about the situation after the show, writing “Hey guys, thanks for the well wishes, I got some nice fresh blood in me and feeling better. People at Idol & Cedars are treatin me real good.” An unnamed “Idol” insider reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter that Abrams received two blood transfusions while in the hospital to treat a condition called ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory condition that affects the lining of the large intestine. Earlier this season, on February 23, Abrams was rushed to the ER after complaining about stomach pains and almost missed the subsequent taping of the top-12 men’s performances, which potentially would have eliminated him from the competition before the finals. Abrams was in no danger of going home on Thursday night’s show, but if his condition continues and he is unable to perform next week, he could be sent home. Last season, eventual runner-up Crystal Bowersox nearly missed out on her chance to stay on the show when she was rushed to the hospital, necessitating a rare lineup shuffle that forced the men to perform a night earlier than scheduled. Had Bowersox not recovered in time, producers said that she was in danger of being eliminated from the show. ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Sammi Reveals Her ‘American Idol’ Favorite

It’s all about Casey Abrams: ‘I love him — his attitude, his charisma,’ closet ‘Idol’ fans says on ‘Idol Party Live.’ By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Sammi Photo: Jonathan Goldner/ MTV News “Idol Party Live” took a trip to the Jersey Shore on Thursday (March 10), when Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola stopped by to chat with MTV News “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello. Who knew Sammi was a closet “Idol” fan? “I think I just really like watching it this time around because there’s so many amazing singers,” she said. “Everyone’s unique in their own way and brings their own flair to the show.” We had to find out who the reality-TV star is rooting for this season, and she had to praise her #1 guy: Casey Abrams. “I love him — his attitude, his charisma, he’s funny, he brings something new every week,” she gushed. “I just like his style. I get chills. Whenever I get chills when I watch ‘American Idol,’ I know I love somebody.” In honor of Sammi’s “Jersey Shore” catchphrase — “I’m done” — we played a round of “Done or Fun” with the “Idol” contestants. So who did Sam find fun, and who was she over? She gave a thumbs-up to Casey (of course) and also Stefano Langone, James Durbin and Thia Megia, but it wasn’t sunshine and rainbows all around. While Sammi thinks Jacob Lusk is “fabulous, don’t get me wrong,” she “didn’t like his song choice.” But she isn’t quite “done” with him yet: “Let’s put him as a maybe.” Lauren Alaina, on the other hand, has been completely written off by the “Jersey Shore” starlet. “I think she’s so cute, but I think she’s still young and has a long way to come to progress,” she explained. “Maybe I’m just done because she’s up against these other amazing singers.” We had to slip in a few “Shore” questions, and Cantiello brought up Sam’s recent Ronnie dis when she told her ex he looked “pale.” This prompted recent “Idol” castoff Rachel Zevita, also an “Idol Party Live” guest, to wonder: “If he’s pale, what would I look like in that house?” “We’ll give you a spray tan before you come to the house,” Sammi promised. ‘American Idol’ Finalist Pia Toscano Plots Her Strategy

Cover of the Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You’ secures her spot in top 13. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s easy to think big when you’re the underdog. And that’s definitely the position New Jersey “American Idol” auditioner Pia Toscano is coming from. After wowing America last week and earning a spot in the finals, Toscano spoke to MTV News at Thursday night’s post-elimination bash about her plans for putting together a successful run on the show. “I definitely want to have those big ballads. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always taken to those huge voices: Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey. So I definitely want to bring that back,” she said of her plan to stick to the strategy that got her where she is now. “But I also want to have those fun dance hits as well.” After flying mostly under the radar so far this season, the raven-haired singer made headlines Wednesday when she performed a stunning cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” which stole the thunder of the rest of the female competitors that night and locked in her place in the top 13. Toscano, 21, was stunned by the reaction from the audience and the judges following her performance. Holding her hands in front of her mouth as Randy Jackson reminded her of the standing ovation she had just received, she seemed floored when he told her that her performance immediately ranked among the best performances in the show’s history. “That was unbelievable,” Jackson told her. “That’s how you do it!” Steven Tyler, after invoking one of his nonsensical Tyler-isms (“You know, after Monday and Tuesday, even a week says WTF” — WTF??), agreed with Jackson’s assertion that she was “unbelievable,” adding as well that it was “gorgeous.” Jennifer Lopez kicked the praise up a notch, calling the performance “out of this world.” “You were saving that for when it counts!” she teased Toscano. Talk about saving your best for last. Toscano said that after not getting much screen time during the early rounds of the show, she was glad that she peaked before the final cut-down. “I felt like I never really showed all that I could do on the show, and I’m so happy that I did save it for when it counted,” she said. “I’ve grown so much as a person and as a vocalist throughout this competition, and I’m so happy that that was my moment to shine.” Toscano will have to prove that she’s more than a one-trick pony Wednesday, when the top 13 take the stage for the first round of live performance and results shows and get a taste of the pressure that comes with singing on live TV every week. Can Pia Toscano win “American Idol”? Sound off below! ‘American Idol’ Wild-Card Choice Was ‘Awful’ For Jennifer Lopez

Judge laments that ‘a lot of kids [went] home who deserved to be there.’ By Kara Warner “American Idol” season 10 top 13 at the top 13 after-party Photo: FOX The first elimination show of the new season of “American Idol” has come and gone in history-making fashion. Host Ryan Seacrest announced on the show Thursday (Mar 3) that around 40 million votes were cast, narrowing the field of 24 hopefuls to 10 contestants, the biggest cuts in the show’s history. Three more wild card contestants sang for their lives and were later added by judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson to make a top 13. When MTV News caught up with the involved parties at Fox’s afterparty to celebrate the “Idol” finalists, there were feelings of relief, joy and, for one judge, discomfort. “Ugh. It was awful!” Lopez said of the deliberation that went on between the judges to select the three wild cards at the end of the show. “It was so tough. It was so hard, even up until the very last second. It was like, wait a minute, we really didn’t know who to choose at the last minute. It could have gone any way. Even when we did it, when we announced it, we were like, ‘Did we do the right thing?’ I don’t know.” Lopez went on to say that there was not really a right or wrong with so many talented contestants in the mix this year. “[We] were going to send somebody home that maybe deserved to be there,” she said. “Probably a lot of kids [went] home who deserved to be there.” Stefano Langone snagged one of the lucky three wild card spots with his rendition of Smokie Norful’s “I Need You Now,” a decision he said he made for several reasons. “I knew if it got to the point where I had to sing for the wild card, that I’d be singing for my life,” Langone explained. “I needed a song that I’d done prior to this point that was the absolute perfect song for my voice, to show my soul, everything that I have, everything I could bring to the table as a musician.” Despite the anxiety involved in singing for his life, Langone said it was a great experience. “I had to work for that spot. I had to work to where I wanted to be, and I feel really blessed to have gotten that. I’m so thankful and honored and blessed. It’s a dream.” Fellow wild-card winner Naima Adedapo felt the same way about her song choice, Donny Hathaway’s “For All We Know.” “It really talks about what I wanted to talk about,” she said. “That is, ‘Love me tonight. I need you to put me through tonight. Let me show you who I am.’ ” Adedapo added that hearing her name called as part of the top 13 had her almost floating on air. “Words can’t really express it, but it’s like a high,” she said. “It’s like being elevated somewhere. I feel like I wasn’t even on earth anymore, I just kind of was happy and in the moment. I felt like I had an opportunity to really show them how much I really want it.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” at 10 p.m. Thursdays on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty !
