One Direction, The Wanted And Boy-Band Explosion 3.0

Our columnist comes to terms with the latest wave of tween heartthrobs, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery One Direction Photo: Getty Images No matter what my detractors (or therapist) might claim, I am not a 13-year-old girl. This probably explains why, up until this weekend, I remained largely unaware of the entire One Direction phenomenon — which is sort of indefensible, considering they made chart history with their #1 debut just last month, have spent quality time with Justin Bieber and display the kind of comb-over acumen that a slightly balding man like myself should probably be taking note of. Though now, thanks to their (genuinely not totally terrible) performance on “Saturday Night Live,” and a creeping sense of inevitability that only comes from living through the previous two boy-band eras (O-Town 4 Ever), I am willing to admit that it’s probably time I get to know the guys in 1D. Their names are Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis, they were formed from the ashes of the U.K.’s “X Factor,” and they are the logical successors to everything that has happened in the past five years of tween pop: a tight-trousered hybrid of the Disney factory’s saccharine hooks, Bieber’s hair, Miley’s Ziplocked vocals, Cody Simpson’s looks and the clean-cut camaraderie of the Jonas Brothers (or AllStar Weekend, who must really be jealous right now). In short, they were basically destined to happen. And happen big. In fact, One Direction might end up being the biggest thing to happen in a long time. Either them or fellow band-of-heartthrobs the Wanted, who only seem to be different in that they are older, hornier — their biggest hit to date is called “Glad You Came” — and able to unbutton their shirts (though, it should be noted that 1D’er Harry could probably be an honorary member of the Wanted, since he ). Perhaps both of them can coexist peacefully. After all, one need only look back to the last great era of boy bands — the late ’90s and early ‘aughts, when ‘NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys battled for supremacy — to realize that the music industry truly is big enough for two titans of tween. If that’s the case (and it probably is), well, then 1D are unquestionably this generation’s ‘NSYNC, and the Wanted the new BSB, since the former display a youthful exuberance and the latter, well, they’re not afraid to (which was A.J.’s only notable contribution to the Boys). All joking aside, though, I can’t help wonder if we know what we’re getting ourselves into here. I am aware that most 1D or the Wanted fans are probably too young to remember the last wave of boy-band mania, but suffice it to say, it was pretty terrible. Dudes had frosted tips and wore baggy neon pants. Aaron Carter got a recording contract. Are we really prepared to live in a world where boy bands are king? Are we ready for the dozens of coattail riders that will surely follow? Can we live with LFO version 2.0? The new Dream Street? 99 Degrees? All of this will happen, mark my words. Be prepared. And yet, I am beginning to realize that perhaps my opinion does not matter. After all, I am a 33-year-old music critic. I like the Cloud Nothings record and was not aware until today that Harry sleeps naked and Louis likes girls who eat carrots. And these are important things to know! By now, I’ve been around long enough to realize that pop music is eternally cyclical, that boy bands were bound to rise again, and that, as always, youth is king. Perhaps I’d be best served to just step out of the way, watch as the same mistakes are made and marvel at the sheer spectacle of history repeating itself. It is as inevitable as One Direction’s rise, really, if not more so. Enjoy it, kids, because I guarantee: Eventually you’ll look back on all this and laugh. And if that sounds like the ranting of a bitter old man, well, so be it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to do my hair like Liam. He’s “the sensible one,” after all. What do you think of the latest wave of boy bands? Do you think there will be more to come? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Tour Will Be ‘Exaggerated’

Producer Fernando Garibay tells fans to ‘use your imagination’ for Mother Monster’s upcoming tour. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias and Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage When Lady Gaga released Born This Way earlier this year, she had just wrapped up the Monster Ball Tour . Now, with 2011 coming to an end, it’s only a matter of time before she launches her next stage spectacle. So what should fans expect? Anything and everything. “This album was the most personal [because of] the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion [and] emotion from her and the team,” Fernando Garibay, Gaga’s producer, told MTV News last week. “Every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. We’re excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level. “You can imagine what happened on the Monster Ball, so use your imagination,” he said. “That’s what’s going to happen, exaggerated.” For now, Gaga is playing radio shows — smaller shows like KIIS-FM’s Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, which she headlined last weekend. “I would love to go out there and do my entire new album, but everyone out there wants to hear the songs that [radio] has made hits for me over the years,” she told us backstage at Jingle Ball. “So I wanted to honor the radio station as well as the fans tonight and give them a little bit of my new record, but also all the songs from the past three years.” She explained to MTV News that these mini-gigs are a good tease of what fans will see on the Born This Way trek. Gaga’s recent performances have been pop shows full of spectacle, including bouncy, hospital-themed dance numbers (an homage to the “Marry the Night” video ) and dedications to metal culture with gang-inspired fashion that certainly reflects the looks she wore on parts of the Monster Ball Tour. But they are on such a smaller scale that Gaga admitted she couldn’t do everything she wanted to do. “I couldn’t fit my Olympic-size moon onto [the] stage,” she laughed. “It’s going to have the feeling of it in some ways. It’s hard to explain. It’s very different aesthetics. But the vision of the show tonight is sort of a continuation of this junkyard motorcycle gang mixed with a dark Christmas. I’m excited; we worked really hard on it.” In addition to beginning to conceive the Born This Way Tour , Gaga just dropped her “Marry The Night” video , is up for three Grammys and is beginning to work on her next album . Katy Perry Gets ‘SNL’ Advice From Russell Brand

‘I’ve only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties,’ Perry jokes during rehearsals for this week’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ episode. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry on the set of “Saturday Night Live” Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — On Saturday when “Saturday Night Live” goes, well, live, Katy Perry will be the lady of the night. The pop singer is currently in rehearsals for her hosting gig , and despite some butterflies, she has in her corner someone who really understands the responsibilities of hosting helping her out from afar: her husband, comedian Russell Brand . “I’ve only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties. This is a bit more than that,” she joked on set with MTV News. “It’s not as intimidating when you get here because it’s a bit smaller than it looks on TV, and I’m up for a challenge, for something new. I love to be challenged … I married Russell Brand.” Speaking of the devil, Brand hosted the show back in February and his wife has been reaching out to him for any and all advice he might be able to offer. “My husband, of course, every day I call him and I’m like ‘this happened’ and he’s like, ‘I know what that means and here’s the next play-by-play for tomorrow,’ so he’s gotten me really prepared for this week, thankfully.” He’s not the only past “SNL” host that Perry is looking to for guidance. She’s also obsessing over Melissa McCarthy’s October hosting appearance. “Well, I saw the Melissa McCarthy episode and I thought she did a great job,” she said. “She’s so fun to watch and she really brings it, so that’s what I was soaking in this week — Melissa McCarthy and all of her nuances.” This marks the second time this year that Perry has been on the show. She was the musical guest back in 2010, but still managed to show off just how funny she can be during a sketch in which she poked fun at some controversy regarding her ample bosom and a canceled “Sesame Street” appearance . “Well, you’re gonna see some Hello Kitty, some cockney accents, maybe, and some me flubbing my lines, probably laughing out loud at Kristen Wiig ’cause she’s amazing,” Perry teased of this week’s show, which will also include musical guest and past tourmate Robyn. “They’re all really amazing. I feel supercool to be able to be in the same breathing space as them.” Speaking of Wiig, Perry recalls one interesting encounter the two have already shared on set. “It’s a bit stalkerish ’cause last time I was here, I Twittered that I would like a lock of Kristen Wiig’s hair so that I can put it under my pillow every night,” she explained. “And she read it and she actually gave me a card with a lock of her hair with a tiny blue bow in it. … Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed.” Related Artists Katy Perry

Justin Bieber’s ‘Mistletoe’ Co-Star Dishes About Kiss

Ali Williams calls smooch ‘very professional’ in video for first single from Under the Mistletoe, which drops Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Ali Williams and Justin Bieber in “Mistletoe” Photo: Island Def Jam In the time since Justin Bieber dropped his “Mistletoe” video, his leading lady, Ali Williams , explains that things have been a little different for her. The18-year-old college freshman is still reeling from the experience and all the attention she’s been getting. “My friends were freaking out a little more than I was,” Williams dished to MTV News. “I wasn’t really prepared for all the stuff that was happening. I think that pretty much everyone has been pretty supportive. There’s some things out there that are untrue, just as far as my age and stuff, but everyone has been really nice and supportive about that.” The big role came after a last-minute email from her agent about the audition. And while director Roman White and his crew kept the project pretty secretive at the audition, Williams used context clues and research to figure out she might be starring in a Bieber video. Eventually, she landed the gig, and the day before the Nashville-area September shoot, she learned who the video was for. “I definitely admire him. He’s very successful in what he’s doing. I wasn’t too familiar with his music, but I was very excited to meet him, and I’m glad that I did,” she confessed. “He was really nice. He was a good person. I heard that he was a nice guy, just from what you read in magazines and stuff, so I wasn’t really worried about meeting him. He was … really easy to get along with, really polite. As far as the kissing, it was very professional. It’s just a job.” She said she hopes the video opens doors for her as she continues to pursue an acting career while also attending Nashville’s Belmont University, where she’s studying journalism. “I was really happy about [the video]. I think it was edited well, and it all came together. I really liked it,” she said. “I would definitely say this is one of my favorite jobs I’ve done so far. Overall, I just thought the whole set was a lot of fun ’cause they made it look exactly like Christmas, and they have fake snow and everything. “It looked really good, and it was weird because it was 75 degrees outside, and we had Santa and snow. It was really good, and it was fun.” “Mistletoe” is the lead single off Under the Mistletoe . The album, which drops Tuesday, features Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Usher, Busta Rhymes and the Band Perry. Share your thoughts on the “Mistletoe” video in the comments below!
