The Voice Recap: Knocked Out Cold

The Voice knockout round concluded during a two-hour Tuesday episode, with the singers picking their own songs and hoping to outperform a teammate. At stake? A spot in the live shows, starting next week. For the first time, each coach can steal during this sudden-death round as well. So who’s on to the finals and who’s going home with a broken dream? Let’s break down The Voice knockout round below! Lina Gaudenzi vs. Preston Pohl – The Voice Knockout Lina Gaudenzi vs. Preston Pohl (Team Adam) Gaudenzi opted for Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” to spotlight her, while Preston stayed upbeat with a rendition of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry.” Both were strong performances and came down to a matter of taste, not a win on technical merit. And as such, Levine went with his gut and saved Pohl. WINNER: Preston! E.G. Daily vs. Ray Boudreaux – The Voice Knockout E.G. Daily vs. Ray Boudreaux (Team Blake) E.G., on Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” and Ray, Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle,” were both solid, but Blake felt Boudreaux had better control. WINNER: Ray! Anthony Paul vs. Jacquie Lee – The Voice Knockout Anthony Paul vs. Jacquie Lee (Team Christina) Aguilera’s steal from Cee Lo’s team chose Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side,” which could not compare to Jacquie’s take on Serena Ryder’s “Stompa.” WINNER: Jacquie! Stephanie Anne Johnson vs. Tamara Chauniece – The Voice Knockout Stephanie Anne Johnson vs. Tamara Chauniece (Team Cee Lo) Green’s steal from Aguilera ended up back on her team after performing Norah Jones’ “Don’t Know Why” and losing this battle, despite her best efforts. The veteran gospel singer went for a reggae version of Alicia Keys’ “No One,” and was just too good in Cee Lo’s mind. But we’ll see both of them again. WINNER: Tamara! STEAL: Anne, by Christina! James Wolpert vs. Juhi – The Voice Knockout James Wolpert vs. Juhi (Team Adam) Boston’s “More Than A Feeling,” while shaky, was enough to get James through over Juhi’s take on Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” WINNER: James! Austin Jenckes vs. Brandon Chase – The Voice Knockout Austin Jenckes vs. Brandon Chase (Team Blake) Jenckes changed the lyrics of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be” to reflect a father-son relationship and emoted more than enough to overshadow his lack of dynamics. Chase upped the range of Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” and left Shelton with a very touch call. In the end he chose to save Jenckes. WINNER: Austin! Caroline Pennell vs. George Horga Jr. – The Voice Knockout Caroline Pennell vs. George Horga Jr. (Team Cee Lo) The young indie pop singer initially stayed safe on Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” in rehearsals, but Cee Lo pushed her to put power on the track. It worked. Green agreed that she won this knockout round and saved Caroline: “She realized herself today, and I think she knows that she’s a star.” WINNER: Caroline! Matthew Schuler vs. Will Champlin – The Voice Knockout Matthew Schuler vs. Will Champlin (Team Christina) Schuler took a big risk with Florence and the Machine’s “Cosmic Love.” Will added a raspy vulnerability to Bruno Mars’ hit “When I Was Your Man.” Going big paid off for both singers, as they earned standing ovations, Aguilera saved Schuler, and Levine pressed his button to steal back Champlin. WINNER: Matthew! STEAL: Will, by Adam! Were the right singers sent home? Who has the most talent? What coach has the best teams? Who do you think has the right stuff to win The Voice Season 5?
