How Justin Bieber Found His Hip-Hop Swag

Following the release of his hip-hop-heavy Believe, MTV News looks at the young pop star’s swaggiest moments. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: You’d think a 1995 collaboration between the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and rap’s widely recognized G.O.A.T., the Notorious B.I.G., would have made a bigger wave, but when MJ released “This Time Around” with Biggie Smalls 17 years ago, mixing pop with hip-hop was still very taboo. Despite the top billing, the track hit with a relative thud. The truth is it just didn’t feel organic, it’s not like Mike grew up listening to rap in Gary, Indiana, in the 1960s, the art form as we know it today just didn’t exist. Justin Bieber was a 1-year old when the King of Pop snagged the King of Hip-Hop for a feature. And unlike Jackson, he grew up during an era when rap stars like Biggie, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur were just as big as their pop counterparts — sometimes bigger. That’s why Bieber mixes hip-hop so seamlessly on his new album Believe. “One, I think they know it’s authentic and two, you got to remember Justin’s past,” JB’s manager Scooter Braun told MTV News. “I was the vice president of So So Def Records and then I left and Justin was the second artist I found after Asher Roth. So here’s this 13-year-old living in Atlanta, no one knows who he is, and he’s just riding around with me and we’re in the studio with Ludacris. We’re in the studio with T.I. We’re in the studio with Big Boi from OutKast, hanging out and he got exposed to that really early.” Ludacris, Drake, Big Sean and Nicki Minaj all appear on the 13-track Believe, but JB’s hip-hop jones didn’t develop overnight. It’s been years in the making. MTV News takes a look back at seven of Justin’s defining hip-hop moments. “Baby” featuring Ludacris JB didn’t have much rapper swag when he dropped “Baby” with Ludacris at the top of 2010, but the track sounded good, especially when Luda dropped his rapid-fire bars over the feel-good track. When he performed a remixed version of the track with fellow Canadian Drake at the 2010 Juno Awards, Justin further proved that he can rock with rap’s finest. “We Are the World 25 For Haiti” After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Quincy Jones assembled an all-star cast of musicians like Kanye West, Usher, Janet Jackson and Justin Bieber to remake the 1985 classic. During the recording, the Biebs got to kick it with notable MCs like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and his long-time friend Nipsey Hussle. “Runaway Love” Remix Featuring Kanye West and Raekwon Justin Biebs proved he “ain’t nothing to f— with” in August 2010 when he linked up with Kanye West and Raekwon for his “Runaway Love” remix. The Chef and Yeezy rapped on the track which sampled Wu-Tang Clan’s dusty underground favorite “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F— Wit.” JB and Nicki Sitting In A Tree So what do Nas and Justin Bieber Have in common? OK, kissing Nicki Minaj on the cheek at the 2010 Video Music Awards doesn’t really give Justin that much rap cred, the voluptuous Nicki could sing country music and we would’ve been just as jealous. “Speaking in Tongues” Freestyle Let’s face it, if you plan on spitting rap bars, the name Justin Bieber just isn’t going to cut it. Enter Shawty Mane: JB’s swagged-out alter-ego. Back in October 2010, Justin showed that singing wasn’t his only talent when he rapped over Vado and Cam’ron’s “Speaking in Tongues.” The freestyles didn’t stop there; Shawty Mane also spit bars over the Throne’s “Otis,” Gang Starr’s “DWYCK” and the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya?” The Biebs Shuts Up Tyler, the Creator It takes a lot to quiet Odd Future’s resident loud mouth Tyler, the Creator, but when he and JB met in February 2011, the multiplatinum pop star didn’t let Wolf Haley get a word in edge wise. “When I got in there, he was talkin’ about the ‘Yonkers’ video and sh–. It was weird, because I was sitting here starstruck, like, ‘Oh, f—, it’s Bieber. He’s asking me questions.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f— up so I can talk to you,’ ” Tyler told MTV News. Lil Swaggy Is Born Not only did 2 Chainz bless JB with a killer verse for his “Girlfriend” remix, the ATL hit-maker also blessed Bieber with a new moniker. “I call him Lil Swaggy,” 2 Chainz told MTV News. Sounds like a winner to us. Related Videos ‘Bieber Live’ Related Artists Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber: Kanye West ‘Doesn’t Even Use a Phone’

Justin Bieber and Kanye West worked together on a remix of his track “Runaway Love”, which will be included on Justin’s new LP Never Say Never – The Remixes , but the 16-year-old pop star insists the creative process was made harder due to Kanye’s reluctance to speak on any telephone. Bieber said: “It’s funny, because he doesn’t even use a phone, he just sends email. It’s so crazy. I’m like, ‘How can you not use a phone?'” Despite his aversion to telephone chats, Justin insists it was great working with Kanye because he was such a talented and “nice” guy to be around. He added to MTV News: “He reproduced the Runaway … joint, and I’m really excited. It was amazing. He’s such a cool guy, and he’s just really laid back and just nice, and at the end of the day, he’s just a nice person.” Meanwhile, Justin’s manager Scooter Braun has revealed the 16-year-old music sensation has been working with Kanye, 33, on several tracks which could make his next studio LP. Scooter said: “Justin is working on new music. He and Kanye had a call the other day about a song they’re trying to work on together – Kanye wants to produce a bunch of new songs for the new album.”

Kanye West wants to produce Bieber

Kanye West wants to produce Justin Bieber ‘s new album. The ‘Power’ hip-hop star has previously collaborated with Justin on a remix of his track ‘Runaway Love’, which he released last year, and teen sensation singer’s manager, Scooter Braun confirmed yesterday (05.01.11) they are planning to work together again. In an online web chat, Scooter said: “Justin and Kanye had a call, about a song they’re trying to work on together. Kanye wants to produce a bunch of new songs for his new album.” He wouldn’t, however, give away the title of the song or any ideas as to how it will sound. Justin, 16, has long had ties with the hip-hop and R ‘n’ B worlds, having been mentored by Usher after he was discovered on YouTube, and he recently appeared in a video from a studio with rapper P. Diddy where he was initiated into his Dirty Money crew, and taught how to do their trademark swaggering walk. Justin’s album, ‘My Worlds’ was named the third most successful of 2010, selling 5.8 million copies.

RZA Wowed By Kanye West’s ‘Runaway Love’ Remix

Justin Bieber remake with Raekwon takes ‘the past generation to the next level,’ says Wu-Tang Clan super-producer. By Shaheem Reid RZA Photo: MTV News Kanye West recently mixed music worlds like a Ron G blend. The Chicago icon flipped the beat from Wu-Tang’s “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F’ Wit,” poured in Justin Bieber’s syrupy vocals from “Runaway Love” and created a b-boy-approved remix. Kanye and the Clan’s Raekwon Chef , of course, also rap on the new rendition. Before the VMAs on Sunday, MTV News hit the white carpet and spoke with the RZA — the producer of “Ain’t Nothin’ ” — who said ‘Ye definitely had his blessing to bring back his classic 1993 beat. “That was crazy,” RZA said of the Biebs’ remix. “[Kanye’s] boy called me up like, ‘Yo, we got the remix. Check this out.’ I was like, ‘Wow. Yo. What a collabo.’ I think that’s good to see. It’s always good to see each generation take the past generation to the next level, man. That’s what we do. We all inspire each other. As artists, we’re allowed to do that. So it’s all good love, man.” RZA is now on his way to China to begin directing a kung-fu flick called “The Man With the Iron Fist.” But music is still heavy on his radar: He’s contributing to Kanye’s upcoming LP and he and Nas have been in talks about working on the Queens legend’s new opus. “Escobar is one of the best MCs to ever bless the mic,” RZA said about Nas. “We’re still trying to figure our schedule out. We both got a lot of big life ahead of us. But we’re getting in. We’re gonna make that classic. You know what it is. Last time, Nas did a verse for me that was on ‘Verbal Intercourse.’ That was a classic. To get back in and make another classic like that would be real good.” What other generation-spanning hip-pop collabos would you like to hear? Tell us your ideas in the comments! Kanye West Drops Justin Bieber ‘Runaway Love’ Remix

Track channels old-school Wu-Tang Clan, with two new verses from Raekwon. By Jayson Rodriguez Justin Bieber and Kanye West Photo: Getty Images On Kanye West’s re-engineered vision of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love,” which arrived online Monday (August 30), ‘Ye and Raekwon take turns trading Wu-homage rhymes in between the teen’s vocals. West sampled the Wu-Tang Clan ‘s 1993 breakout smash “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F— Wit” for the number. In his verse, Kanye pays homage to Raekwon’s standout verse on Jodeci’s “Freek’N You” remix, among other nods to the Staten Island collective. The veteran Wu lyricist also gives a nod to that same verse. “Yo, ‘Ye, what up,” Rae spits, opening the track like he did on the Jodeci hit. “You got stacks like the International House of Pancakes/ All alone, ready to phone me and your hand shakes/ Palms is wetted, don’s regret/ Never to walk miles for love, I sit in the starter’s deck.” “Last name West, and my teeth diamonds,” West rapped. “She said, ‘Yo, what’s your occupation: crazy rhyming?’ ” Bieber’s vocals are the same as on the original. Raekwon anchors the song with two verses, and Kanye has one verse on the track. Raekwon spoke to MTV News earlier this month and revealed that only he and West joined forces in the studio for the track. The wordsmith made no mention of Bieber among the celebrities who were present during the session at New York’s Electric Lady Studios. “Kanye was just being Kanye,” Rae said. “He was definitely excited. The energy in the room was already speaking for itself. It was time to get up and have fun on the track together. We was drinking, laughing, being normal cats. At the same time, we had a houseful of celebrities in the house as well. [Kanye] was moving through the facility, checking out the studios he had. He had three studios in there. “You had Akon in the building. Mos Def was just chillin’. Mos is a good friend of ‘Ye’s,” Rae added. “You had Charlie Wilson, the legendary cat from the Gap Band. Chris Rock walked in. These are guys that really respect who ‘Ye is. ‘Ye’s energy is cool. He’s a normal cat. A normal Chicago/world cat. Very mature. Having a great time.” The record came together after Kanye West and Justin Bieber talked to each other via Twitter. “Listening to @JustinBieber ‘Run Away love,’ ” West wrote “I love Sunday mornings in the crib.” Bieber responded and the two traded messages about their mutual admiration. West then added Raekwon in the mix. The producer revealed that the Wu-Tang Clan star performed on one of his favorite remixes of all time, Jodeci’s “Freek’N You” redux. “Maybe me and Rae should hop on Runaway Love! FLEX would drop bombs,” West wrote on Twitter, referring to Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex’s method for showing his approval of records. What do you think of Kanye West’s “Runaway Love” remix?
