Meet Stephenie Meyer’s New ‘Eclipse’ Vampires In ‘Bree Tanner’

Several newborns from ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’ could appear in the ‘Twilight’ film on June 30. By Terri Schwartz Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” Photo: Hachette Book Group With so much attention on the fact that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” swept the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, it is almost easy to forget that there was another exciting “Twilight”-related event this weekend: the release of “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” on Saturday. If you couldn’t get your hands on Stephenie Meyer’s new novella in the store over the past two days, it’s available to read online for free from Monday (June 7) until July 5 at BreeTanner.com . “Short Second Life” is more than just a companion story for “The Twilight Saga.” Meyer gave Jodelle Ferland and director David Slade the backstory of this character, so it seems pretty certain that some of Bree’s side of the story will make its way into the film when it opens on June 30. While Bree and Victoria’s henchman Riley were characters that readers met from Bella’s perspective in “Eclipse,” “Short Second Life” introduces a few key members of the newborn army that may get some screen time in the upcoming film. Bree Tanner After running away from home because her father beat her, Bree was so hungry, all Riley had to do was promise her a burger to trick her into becoming a vampire. She’s not sure if she was 15 or 16 when she was turned, three months before the battle in “Eclipse.” Raoul and Kristie Of the twenty-odd newborns Bree is living with in “Short Second Life,” these are the two that are most likely to appear in the movie. They each lead their own “gang” of newborns, with Raoul controlling most of the male vampires and Kristie directing most of the females. Neither is physically described in the book, so it’s not clear exactly what they look like, but from the exclusive photo MTV received of the newborns following Riley out of a body of water, it can be inferred that they are the male and female vampires flanking him. Freaky Fred The two newborns that Bree befriends in “Short Second Life” are a bit less likely to make it into the final cut of “Eclipse.” Fred, a tall, muscular vampire with curly blond hair who Bree guesses to be around college-age, has the special ability to be able to repulse those around him, and can slip by unnoticed by making it so that no one can lay their eyes on him. He protects Bree this way and leaves the rest of the newborn pack before they confront the Cullens in the final battle. Diego The clear-headed newborn teams up with Bree early on in “Short Second Life” and the two develop a chaste but sweet romantic relationship over the course of one day. Diego is older than most of the others (by a few months) and not as savagely driven by his thirst. He’s described as having “dark, dense, curly hair, big, wide eyes and really full lips,” and — like all of Meyer’s vampires — he’s very, very pretty. SPOILER : His second life barely lasts longer than hers does, and he doesn’t make it to the final battle against the Cullens. A few other newborns named in the novella: Kevin, one of Raoul’s lackeys, and Sara and Jen, who follow Kristie. None of them received physical descriptions in the novella, so unless they are referred to by name, it will be hard to pin them down amid the rest of the army. There is also a vampire whom Bree calls “the blond Spider-man kid” because he talks about the comic book hero and climbs walls like him in one scene. As anyone who has read “Eclipse” knows, Victoria’s army doesn’t fare well against the Cullens, and neither does Bree. Still, her novella offers a unique opportunity for fans to get to know those that had once just been nameless enemies, making for a more poignant battle when the third “Twilight” film hits the big screen starting June 30. Stephenie Meyer Explains Why Bree Tanner Deserves Her Own Book

‘Twilight’ author wants fans to read the spin-off novella before seeing ‘Eclipse.’ Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” Photo: Hachette Book Group Given the fanfare and publicity typically granted Stephenie Meyer whenever she types or breathes a new word, the famous author has been relatively quiet about this Saturday’s release of her “Twilight” novella, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.” But thanks to a Q&A posted on TheTwilightSaga.com by publisher Little Brown, fans now have a little more insight into why Meyer focused this book on the character Bree, and why she wants fans to read the story before they go see “Eclipse” in a few weeks. Meyer first explained that because “Eclipse” is so focused on Bella’s point of view, she wasn’t able to delve into the story of newborn vampires like Bree . “There was always in my mind a general idea of what they were up to,” she explained. “To keep it all straight, eventually I made a calendar of the months of May and June — which is all ‘Eclipse’ deals with — and wrote down on each square what was going on with Bella that day and what was happening in Seattle. … The story of the newborns was always a big part of the story of ‘Eclipse.’ And it made me kind of sad that there was no way to express any of that in the book.” Regarding the singling out of Bree, Meyer said she was the only newborn mentioned by name in “Eclipse,” and the only one who has

MTV’s Bree Tanner Cheat-Sheet – Everything You Need To Know

MTV.com compiled a list of everything you’ll need to know about Bree Tanner – the young newborn vampire that Victoria created in Eclipse – due to Stephenie Meyer’s recent announcement of a novella she will release about Bree An “Eclipse” Exclusive: If you’ve only been watching the “Twilight” movies or read the first two books, don’t be shocked that you have no idea who Bree Tanner is. In fact, don’t be upset if you read “Eclipse” and still have no idea who she is. Tanner is a character introduced a startlingly short amount of time before she dies in “Eclipse” and could be considered (to everyone except Stephenie Meyer) to be a throwaway character. A Short Life: Tanner is only introduced 10 pages before she is killed off in Victoria’s war against the Cullens and the Quileute werewolf tribe. However, of all the newborn vampires discussed in “Eclipse,” Tanner was one of the few to be named and introduced to the readers. Unfortunately, it didn’t take very long after she was turned into a vampire for her to meet her end … again. Dramatic Death Scene: It turns out Tanner isn’t the best newborn vampire among them all, and she isn’t a big fan of killing innocents and drinking their blood. She tries to join forces with the Cullen clan and adapt to their “vegetarian vampire” lifestyle, but ends up being killed by Felix on the orders of Jane, a member of the Volturi guard (played by Dakota Fanning in the film), in the final battle. Newborn Vampires: A big part of the story in “Eclipse” surrounds the bad-girl vampire Victoria creating an army of newborn vampires in the Seattle area so she can wage war on Edward Cullen, who killed her beau James way back in “Twilight.” When a vampire is first created, it is at its strongest, so Victoria went around recklessly creating vampires so she could have an extremely powerful army behind her. Tanner was just one of the fatalities. Seattle: The trouble with the first-person perspective of “The Twilight Saga” is that the reader can’t read what is happening firsthand beyond what Bella Swan sees with her own eyes. Much like “Midnight Sun” gave (some) of the details behind what happened elsewhere in “Twilight,” “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” will show what happened in Seattle with Victoria during “Eclipse.” But since much of “Eclipse” is devoted to the characters wondering what exactly was going on in Seattle, seeing it through the eyes of a secondary character like Tanner is a smart companion piece to the book. Unseen First Life: Unfortunately for Tanner, the world will never know what happened to her before she became a vampire. She was introduced into “Eclipse” after she was a newborn and “The Short Second Life” will start off the same way. There is a chance of flashbacks telling about her life before becoming a vampire, but the way Meyer described the novella on her Web site made it seem as though Tanner was the narrator solely so the reader could see what went on in Seattle, not to learn her past. In The Movies: “Eclipse” director David Slade at least had more of a heads-up than fans and retailers did about “The Short Second Life,” and he cast 14-year-old Jodelle Ferland in the role. Slade and Ferland, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria) and Xavier Samuel (Riley), were given advance copies of the book to read so they could have a complete knowledge of what went on in Seattle for the film. {via MTV }
