As previously reported Dravon Ames and his fiancé Iesha Harper were driving with their daughters, ages 1 and 4, before they were terrorized by police . Officers approached the family after the 4-year-old slipped a Barbie into her backpack unbeknownst to the parents. Police overreacted to the alleged theft and pulled out their guns threatening to kill Iesha who’s currently pregnant, in front of her children. An officer also told Dravon  “I’m going to put a cap in your a**, I’m gonna shoot you in your (expletive) face” before pulling him out of the car, kicking him in the right leg, and punching him in the back. The couple says the officers committed battery, unlawful imprisonment, false arrest and infliction of emotional distress in addition to violating their civil rights. AZ Central reports that Team ROC is not only offering to provide legal support, Team ROC’s calling for the termination of the police officers and “ensuring the well-being of the children,” according to Didier Morais, a PR spokesperson for the organization. Team ROC has secured high-profile attorney Alex Spiro to join the family’s legal team and they’re planning to pursue a child neglect charge against one of the officers. “There is no place for that behavior in our world – let alone our justice system – and we are calling for the immediate termination of the police officers in question,” said Roc Nation Managing Director of Philanthropy Dania Diaz. “We are committed to supporting the family to ensure that justice is served.” In case you forgot, Team ROC is known for getting results. The legal team stepped in to stop the deportation of 21 Savage. Kudos to Roc Nation for helping this family get the justice they deserve.

Taco Bell Foundation Awards $4.6 Million In Live Más Scholarships, More Than Half Go To Students Of Color

The fast-food chain’s foundation is announcing that it’s dishing out more than just fourth meal curbing cravings, The Taco Bell Foundation is awarding $4.6 million in scholarships. Dubbed the Live Más Scholarships, the scholarships were created for students with passion, not academic merit or athletic ability. All that the application requires is a 2-minute video describing what they love to do. No essays, test scores or GPA are considered for the awardees. This year after receiving nearly 13,000 applicants, TB’s awarding money to 531 students, over half which are students of color. This is especially important considering the racial disparities in education. According to  EdBuild , predominantly white school districts receive $23 billion more than with districts that serve mostly students of color. According to  Brookings , black graduates with bachelor’s degrees owe $7,400 more on average in college loans than their white peers. The Taco Bell Foundation gave out $25,000 worth of Live Más moola, the scholarship’s top prize, to several deserving students including: Dwalyn Bryant a former Taco Bell employee who will use the scholarship to study biomedical health at Penn State, in hopes of becoming a surgeon one day. After her mom was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, she knew that wanted to make an impact in the medical field. In addition to maintaining straight A’s and her job at Taco Bell, she has participated in programs with the National Institute of Health and the Army Education Outreach Program. In 2016, she founded her own non-profit, the Yes She Can Campaign, to provide educational opportunities to girls and young women. She has volunteered over 9,000 community service hours, reached over 1,000 students nationwide and chartered two college chapters of her non-profit. Zaniya is a renewal winner. She won $25,000 this year, $10,000 last year, and $2,500 the year before, bringing her total awards to $37,500. Curious about how to increase his airflow and become a better trumpet player, Miles combined his passions for music and science to learn more about human anatomy. The Bordelons are back in the trailer for season 4 of Ava Duvernay’s “Queen Sugar.” In it, we see the family continuing their fight to save their farm and preserve their father’s legacy. Charley isn’t stopping her battle against the Landry family all while trying to ensure Micah’s safety and future. As for her sister Nova, she’s successfully published her memoir and while she goes on a book tour around the country sharing her family secrets and shaking things up at home, she unexpectedly encounters significant relationships from her past along the way. Inexplicably chocolatey panty melter Ralph Angel is managing fatherhood and yes, Darla’s around even though Ralph Angel is well aware that he’s not the biological father of his son, Blue. We’ll see a more level headed Ralph Angel this season, one who’s encouraged by an old friend to create opportunities for formerly incarcerated men like himself. Once again (our girl) Ava is continuing the series’ use of an all-female directing team. Season 4 directors will include Cheryl Dunye, who will also serve as producing director, Carmen Marrón, Numa Perrier, Heidi Saman, Bola Ogun, and Tchaiko Omawale. For the first time, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss America are all Black women and the three appeared on CBS to describe their journey and groundbreaking wins: “It’s symbolic, I think, and it sends a message across the world really that you can be anything you want to be, and there doesn’t have to be just one of us at a time up here,” Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin said on Tuesday. “It can be all. And I think it showcases diversity as well.” Cheslie Kryst, who won the title of Miss USA last Thursday also added, “It’s also a reminder of how far we have to go.” She continued: “I believe when Ursula Burns was no longer the CEO of Xerox, there were no more Black female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and that is an unfortunate statistic to know. So I think this celebration or this landmark should we celebrated, but it’s also a reminder we have a lot to do.” Kryst currently serves as an attorney in North Carolina who practices civil litigation, and she also represents prisoners in pro-bono work. Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris , who ignored advice and proudly showcased her natural curls during the competition, also explained how representation matters: “I have all these influencers that I look up to on social media. Now I’m getting messages from moms of biracial kids, and kids themselves that are biracial. And girls that are scared to wear their hair naturally, and them saying that I have been a big influence in their lives and that they’re going to start wearing their hair naturally or that they’re more proud to just be themselves. It fills my heart with joy,” Garris said. Garris explained how she used to always straighten her hair for pageants: “It’s just kind of what I did. I looked up to my mom a lot, and she had straight blond hair. I really wanted to embody the same characteristics and I thought I had to do that physically. But as I grew up, I realized I can do that while being myself and still be powerful,” she said. You can watch more of what the icons had to say in the clip below!
