Spragga Benz Talks ‘Chiliagon,’ Jamaica’s Censorship

Source: press handout / tma A few days before this year’s West Indian Day Parade in New York City, Spragga Benz was a guest at SUNY Empire State in downtown Brooklyn. The dancehall pioneer was seated at the front of the room alongside two music executives and Dr. Carolyn Cooper, a professor at the University of the West Indies. They would be discussing the future of dancehall and reggae music as well as what that progression means for new artists. “The youth are doing their thing,” Spragga says, following the panel. “It’s a whole new generation from 1995. A different set of youth.  They’re expressing themselves and it’s not fair for us to say that what they’re doing isn’t right. Or lesser than that because we were free to do what we wanted and our parents were probably saying that what we were doing is stupid or wrong.” “A man may start out slack and end up conscious. It’s a journey.”—Spragga Benz On an elevated platform, Spragga offered stories of humble beginnings and incidentally finding his place in dancehall, although his personal business would have been better off without the cameras and the bright lights. “More people wanted me to record and I was like, ‘Alright. This thing is getting out of hand now…” The audience chuckled collectively. He continued earnestly, “Because my thinking at the time was about the type of lifestyle I was living, the type of friends that I had and the type of things we were doing… I’m not going up on no stage.”  View this post on Instagram See me with my spliff… big tune on the Grass Is Greener soundtrack #netflix @salaamremi production A post shared by Spragga Benz (@spraggabenz3) on Oct 13, 2019 at 5:56pm PDT That fear of exposure ended shortly thereafter as Spragga would go on to run the genre in mid-90s and now as he nears 30 years in the industry, there’s a sense of reverence that comes with his name. So much so that his first album in nearly a decade, Chiliagon , debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Reggae charts. Spragga Benz is out here breaking personal records for himself, even still. In a recent press release, Lem Oppenheimer, co-founder of Easy Star stated, “We are proud to have helped Spragga get to #1 for the first time in his career. What this shows us is that Spragga is still a vibrant artist, a current creative force, and an important voice in reggae worldwide.”    The album [ cop it here ] is a direct reflection of how Spragga defines the word ‘chiliagon’ — “a shape with a thousand sides.” The mix of roots reggae, drum and bass, dancehall, grime, garage and hip-hop highlights an evolution of sound, at least from his end. “That’s how I approach music,” he reveals. “I don’t really box into anything. I have different sides to myself and there’s an inclusion of all different genres of music, but to me a lot of different music comes from dancehall same way. So this album shows the connections and similarities and how a dancehall artist actually sounds over these different beats that actually aren’t that different.” Spragga claims that “No Regrets,” a wavy, roots reggae-inspired track from Chiliagon is his favorite on the album. Preceding the LP, Spragga’s “Count Tree” over the “Calaloo” riddim specifically highlights his spirited flow alongside synth-heavy production with just enough bounce to fall within the lines of traditional dancehall. Another single, “If Yuh Ready,” with UK DJ General Levy is specifically grime, or as Spragga describes: “Jungle Music!” His eyes light up, excitedly. “That same jungle music? It’s derived from dancehall music. It’s the same thing just sped up. They use our same bass lines and faster drums.” Naturally mellow, nothing seems to move Spragga Benz like music or talks of progression. As an OG in the dancehall world, Spragga has made it his business — his literal business, with Red Star Productions — to help motivate and encourage those coming behind him. Red Star is a sort of in-between, for young creatives trying to find their way. “We try to enhance the talent of young artists, bringing what they have out of them,” he explains. “Some may come to us as artists but they aren’t really artists. They might be a better producer or road manager or a writer, whatever it is that you want to do, we’ll push you to do it anyways, because that’s your desire until you find your growth and then you can always divert.”  “We try to just bring people in, let them be themselves but we try and guide them in the direction they want to go in without tying them to anything. You owe us nothing. It’s just doing you doing your own work and us giving you a platform.” View this post on Instagram #Repost @sunyuwicenter ・・・ Thank you to all of the participants who supported the successful launch of the SUNY-UWI Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development —Community Engagement Lecture Series entitled: “The Caribbean Music Industry 2019: What’s Next for Reggae, Dancehall and New Breakout Artists?” . . . #brooklyn #brooklynny #education #highered #suny #spraggabenz #sunyuwicenter #sunyuwi #clsd #music #breakoutartists #summerlecture @cristyofaragon @spraggabenz3 @irie_bobby @sunyempire @uwitv #empirestatecollege #carolyncooper #communityengagement #lectureseries #caribbeancommunityimpact #jamaicandiaspora #reggaemusic #dancehallmusic #artist A post shared by Spragga Benz (@spraggabenz3) on Aug 20, 2019 at 2:58pm PDT Earlier in the evening, during the panel, one man in the audience stood up and lamented, “It is the artist’s responsibility to censor your lyrics…” Attendees murmured in their seats. “You owe it to the youth.” It was only a matter of time before the topic arose of Jamaica’s unyielding moral code of conduct. Spragga held steadfast in his belief that an artist having to censor himself, defeats the idea of his being a creative. “They’re [the government] censoring dancehall artists, specifically,” he shares later. “Because those from other genres are able to say whatever they feel like saying. And I just think we should be free to say whatever we feel and express ourselves in our own way. Every man has his own idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. So leave a man to his own judgment and learning.”  “A man may start out slack and end up conscious. It’s a journey,” he continues. “Allow a man to walk his journey. Censorship comes in when some people want power over other people. Or when some people feel important and want to be ‘the God’ over what other people are doing and when you have enough people who feel that way, they form themselves into bodies and give themselves titles and feel even more important.”  “But artists only want to express themselves, we have our own moral compass to follow. A lot of us have children too and come from good homes with parents that give us certain  responsibilities and morals as well.”

Racks City: Tyga Inks Multi-Million Dollar Deal With Columbia Records

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN Tyga proved that he still had hits left in the chamber after his massive 2011 single “Rack City” with 2018’s “Taste” featuring Offset, and the release of his seventh studio album, Legendary . Now, the 29-year-old rapper is back in the major label fold after inking a multi-million dollar deal with Columbia Records. As exclusively reported by Variety , Tyga, born Michael Ray Stevenson, signed with Columbia Records after the success of the aforementioned “Taste” and appearances on chart-topping hits from Iggy Azalea on “Kream” and “Go Loko” from YG. Tyga told the outlet that the pairing between him and Columbia is something he’s looking forward to. From Variety : Joining the Sony Music label was a decision made with a global view, Tyga tells Variety. “They definitely understand the global brand,” he says of the company. “I have a lot of fans worldwide — in places I’ve never been like South America, and in places I have been like Asia and Europe. They can help bring that to a larger scale. Doing it independently, you don’t really have those teams to help worldwide. Sony, if you look at the history from what they’ve done from Pharrell to Beyonce to Adele — then you look at Lil Nas X, one of their new artists that’s blown up this year — they’ve done a lot for artists globally, for their brand. That’s why I wanted to partner up with them.” Congrats to Tyga! — Photo: WENN

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Bryne Talk Instant Family, The Red Sox & Parenting

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Bryne star in the new family comedy Instant Family from Paramount Pictures. Today on Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine I talk to the pair about their feel-good comedy. The movie follows Pete and Ellie, played by Mark and Rose, when they decide to start a family, only to end up in the world of foster care adoption. They in willing to take in one small child, but eventually fall in love with the idea of taking in three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl. Literally, overnight they go from zero to three kids and watching the new parents learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hope of becoming a family is completely hilarious. I went into this thinking a comedy about adoption, really! Surprisingly the movie really worked. Mark and Rose had instant chemistry on film, I asked them when did they know they had something. Mark said he knew it the moment Rose signed on to be in the film, “When we had our first table read rehearsal on the Sony lot, on a little soundstage and she is fantastic. Elle is such a great character, very well written, she is tough and no-nonsense. I loved the moment when she starts going in on her family and starts telling them what she’s going to do, after the idea of them being relieved that they weren’t going to adopt then she decides no we are going to do it, just to spite them.” The movie has some really funny moments that make you laugh but shows the difficulty of foster care. There is a scene where Pete and Elle are having dinner with the kids and the youngest daughter demands potato chips. You can see that clip in this episode. The pair kept showering each other with praise throughout the interview with Rose telling that Mark was a delight to work with revealing how he went to go serve the troops during his downtime filming. Instant Family is a funny film that is filled with heart and worth seeing if you need a feel-good movie or if this weekend’s big-budget blockbuster is sold out and you’re looking for another option. Instant Family is in theaters now.

Molly Shattuck, Ex-Ravens Cheerleader, Sentenced For Rape of 15-Year-Old Boy

Former NFL cheerleader Molly Shattuck must spend 48 weekends in a work-release program as part of her sentence for raping a 15-year-old boy. She will serve out that time in a work-release detention center in Delaware; Shattuck, 48, was sentenced today for committing the sexual offense. Shattuck apologized after pleading guilty in June to one count of fourth-degree rape, an offense that could have carried a maximum of 15 years. “I was the adult, and I’m sorry,” Shattuck said through years. “I never should have had the conversation with someone else’s son and I’m sorry.” “I will spend the rest of my life making this right.” Shattuck was arrested back in November 2014 on charges of third-degree rape, unlawful sexual contact and giving alcohol to minors. A plea deal later reduced the charge to a less serious offense. Police said she performed oral sex on the boy, last Labor Day weekend. Shattuck, according to court records, had connected with the boy through her teenage son , the same age as him, and via social media. Over the summer, police said in affidavits, Shattuck and the boy exchanged sexualized texts and emails, and met in parked cars. The mother and father of the victim asked Superior Court Judge E. Scott Bradley to sentence Shattuck to more than just probation. Bradley sentenced Shattuck to two years of level 3 probation, however, meaning 48 weeks of work-release and $10,650 in restitution. Shattuck must register in Delaware as a Tier II sex offender, and not contact anyone younger than 18 other than her own children. “The competing interests in this case are very difficult to weigh,” Bradley said, explaining his decision to hand down that punishment.

Sam Rader of Sam and Nia: Revealed to Be Ashley Madison Client

You might not know the name Sam Rader, but you there’s a very good chance that you’re familiar with his work. Earlier this month, Rader  “surprised” his wife Nia with news of her pregnancy , a feat he achieved by stealing her urine from a toilet. (It gets weirder.) Video of Nia’s reaction went viral, but just days later, the couple claimed to have  suffered a miscarriage , and they shared the news online in a heartbreaking follow-up clip that’s amassed millions of view on YouTube. Since the two videos took Sam and Nia from little-known religious vloggers to bankable viral sensations overnight, many vocally wondered if the whole thing had been nothing more than a publicity stunt. But rather than angrily put their accusers in their place, Sam and Nia issued a confusing statement explaining that the pregnancy had been staged…by God. Yeah, we have no idea what that means either, but we do know that we’re side-eyeing Sam and Nia harder than ever today, following the revelation that Sam had a paid account with Ashley Madison – the website designed solely to help married people cheat on their spouses. As you’ve no doubt heard, the site was recently hacked and it was publicly revealed that disgraced reality star Josh Duggar was an Ashley Madison customer . Now, Mr. Rader, who’s also based his career on preaching the importance of Christian family values, is the latest victim of the most damaging public information dump since the Fappening or the Sony hack. Of course, the big difference with the Ashley Madison scandal is that the dudes being busted totally deserve it. You can expect a groveling video apology from Rader any minute now.
