No Chill: Twitter Hilariously Slams ‘Green Book’ By Comparing It To “Non-Racist” White People

Visit link:

Source: Frazer Harrison / Getty It’s that time of year again when the post-Oscar buzz either has you on a big high, or it has you highly pissed off. Sadly, when it comes to representation for Black people, the latter usually happens more than the former. At this year’s Oscars, however, there were some notable wins for Black people. Black Panther swept some important technical awards with Ruth E. Carter winning for Best Costume Design and Hannah Beachler  winning for Best Production Design, making them the first Black women to win in either category. Regina King also won Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk while Mahershala Ali snagged the gold statue for his supporting role in Green Book. Add a Best Adapted Screenplay win for Spike Lee , and Black people are winning, right?! Meh. When time came around for the Best Picture announcement, many people were surprised or just plain outraged when Green Book took home the gold. A lot of folks took their pain out on Twitter in the most hilarious way. But before we get to that, if you haven’t seen or heard of Green Book, the movie based on real characters has developed quite a notorious reputation. Although Mahershala’s performance in the movie was praised, the flick centers around Bronx-bred racist Tony Lip (played by Viggo Mortensen), who serves as the tour driver for acclaimed musician Dr. Don Shirley (played by Ali). The movie explores race relations on a very shallow level, with Lip being portrayed as a White savior who defends Shirley from Southern White racists and introduces him to things like fried chicken and Little Richard …as if Shirley, a Black musician, couldn’t have possibly had fried chicken or heard of Little Richard.   Regardless if certain scenes were true or not, the movie painted Lip as a regular working-class White man who just happened to have some prejudices. More importantly, we should sympathize with him because he’s supposedly less racist than the Southern racist caricatures that we’re all-too familiar with in movies. Many people slammed this one-note approach to race relations with shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers and Desus & Mero making parodies of the movie.     The family members of the real-life Dr. Shirley also dragged the film with Shirley’s younger brother Maurice Shirley labeling the movie a “symphony of lies,” according to Shadow and Act . The title of the movie wasn’t even appropriate. The real-life Green Book, “The Negro Motorist Green Book” published by postal worker Victor Hugo Green in 1938, listed priceless info of safe eating establishments and lodging for Black people in the Jim Crow South. The Green Book movie barely covered this important info aside from a scene when Lip was handed a copy of the Green Book by a recording label executive. All of these issues made Green Book ‘s Best Picture win feel like another smack in the face to Black stories. When competing with Black-led films like Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman, the white-washed, White savior narrative won again. Even creatives like Spike Lee couldn’t contain their frustration, considering the BlacKkKlansman  director reportedly stormed out his seat when Green Book was announced as Best Picture. Of course, many frustrations were let out on Twitter with White and Black users alike clowning the movie’s shallow take on race. Green Book was not for Black people. It was to make white people feel good about doing little to stop racism beyond the interpersonal. Also, the other movies were better. ALSO, Regina, Ruth, Spike & more amazing Black folks won last night so I’m done talmbout Green a Book. — Brittany Packnett (@MsPackyetti) February 25, 2019   Because the Internet has no chill, many people also hilariously made fun of Green Book by comparing it to that one White person who tries waaay too hard to prove they’re not racist. Some of Green Book’s best friends are black movies. — Alex Seitz-Wald (@aseitzwald) February 25, 2019   Hit the next pages for more spot-on tweets of how Green Book strikingly resembles your allegedly “non-racist” White friend.

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Bryne Talk Instant Family, The Red Sox & Parenting

Mark Wahlberg and Rose Bryne star in the new family comedy Instant Family from Paramount Pictures. Today on Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine I talk to the pair about their feel-good comedy. The movie follows Pete and Ellie, played by Mark and Rose, when they decide to start a family, only to end up in the world of foster care adoption. They in willing to take in one small child, but eventually fall in love with the idea of taking in three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl. Literally, overnight they go from zero to three kids and watching the new parents learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hope of becoming a family is completely hilarious. I went into this thinking a comedy about adoption, really! Surprisingly the movie really worked. Mark and Rose had instant chemistry on film, I asked them when did they know they had something. Mark said he knew it the moment Rose signed on to be in the film, “When we had our first table read rehearsal on the Sony lot, on a little soundstage and she is fantastic. Elle is such a great character, very well written, she is tough and no-nonsense. I loved the moment when she starts going in on her family and starts telling them what she’s going to do, after the idea of them being relieved that they weren’t going to adopt then she decides no we are going to do it, just to spite them.” The movie has some really funny moments that make you laugh but shows the difficulty of foster care. There is a scene where Pete and Elle are having dinner with the kids and the youngest daughter demands potato chips. You can see that clip in this episode. The pair kept showering each other with praise throughout the interview with Rose telling that Mark was a delight to work with revealing how he went to go serve the troops during his downtime filming. Instant Family is a funny film that is filled with heart and worth seeing if you need a feel-good movie or if this weekend’s big-budget blockbuster is sold out and you’re looking for another option. Instant Family is in theaters now.

The Rewind: Mahershala Ali Motors Through Jim Crow’s America & Sade’s Got A New Track

Source: Global Grind / Global Grind You already know what time it is! It’s time for another episode of Global Grind’s The Rewind  hosted by none other than DJ Franchise and Landon Lavarius. Like we do each and every week, The Rewind is going to break down some of the things you may have missed out on a week ago, recap, share our take and then wrap it all up with a 1 to 10 rating to let you know whether it was worth living under a rock over. On today’s episode, Landon Lavarius and DJ Franchise will discuss Mahershala Ali’s new movie Green Book which dropped today, November 16th. The film also stars Viggo Mortensen and is about Ali, who plays a world-class pianist who’s about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962 and hires a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx as his driver and bodyguard.  It’s like Driving Miss Daisy but in reverse. Landon and Franchise both got to watch the movie, however, they have conflicting views as to whether the film is hot or not. Landon Lavarius brings up a great point about Viggo Mortensen’s recent N-word controversy. During a question and answer session for the movie, Viggo dropped the N bomb while explaining racism in the 1960s. Ali actually discussed the incident during an appearance on The View. He said, “In this case and with Viggo who I absolutely love and adore, there’s a difference between racism, insensitivity and a lack of awareness. Any time a debate can be had in black culture about the appropriateness of the word, that should be left in black culture to have that debate, [in the] black community. But any time a non-black person says it in a space, there’s a mini-explosion that goes off within you because you suddenly haven’t processed the intention behind it, the relationship behind it.” Find out what Landon and DJ Franchise rate the film by clicking play. Have you been itching for some new music from Sade? Well, on November 10th, the songbird released a new track ‘The Big Unknown’ which appears on the soundtrack for the Steve McQueen-directed film Widows  starring Viola Davis. Did our girl Sade deliver a smash? Landon and DJ Franchise weigh in! Also, we couldn’t let an entire episode of The Rewind go by without wishing a heartfelt farewell to the creative genius that is Stan Lee. Check out the latest episode of The Rewind above!

David Cronenberg Talks ‘Cosmopolis,’ High Frame Rates, And ‘Bullshit’ Oscars

2012 brought us two whacked-out limousine-set films from auteurs bearing all the markings of future cult classics. But while Leos Carax’s Holy Motors received universal critical praise, David Cronenberg ‘s Robert Pattinson -starring Cosmopolis left critics a little more divided , although how anyone could dislike a film featuring an R-Pattz prostate exam is one of life’s great mysteries. Movieline spoke with Cronenberg, a man who at this point seems physically incapable of tolerating bullshit, about his career, Oscar hopes and realities, and new advances like the High Frame Rate Peter Jackson used on The Hobbit . Along the way he riffed hypothetical on what he’d do for awards season glory, assessed the comfortable niche he’s carved out for himself on the fringes of the studio system, and revealed what he really thinks about… cats. Happy New Year! The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn’t bug you too much that this film isn’t being discussed more as a contender. Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it’s been very easy because we haven’t been nominated for any awards. It’s not sour grapes, it’s not compensation; it’s a relief. It’s very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won’t be watching any of the awards shows. It’s not just showing up that night, there’s months of campaigning. Oh, yes. I’ve talked with several people, one of whom was Denys Arcand, a French Canadian director who won the Best Foreign Language Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions — I know him well. He said he would never, ever do it again. He said it was a year, an incredibly intense year, and ultimately rather boring. Because he’s not doing anything creative at all, just selling. For a guy like Denys Arcand, though, does an award affect his bottom line? Does it affect his career? Will he be able to buy a new house after winning? No, not really. On the contrary, it’s caused him to retreat. He’s decided he doesn’t want to be involved in anything remotely Hollywood. He wants to make Quebecois films. He attempted to make some movies in English with emerging stars and it was a disaster — it’s not his sensibility. For an actor, though, perhaps it’s a different story. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for some of your films, Keira Knightley was discussed for A Dangerous Method . But let’s say she had won — would that have elevated her, and gotten her roles she wouldn’t have gotten otherwise? I don’t think so. She’s incredibly sought after — despite the fact that the British critics are often on her, but they like to eat their own, let’s face it. She’s too smart and beautiful and too talented, it drives them crazy. I don’t see [an award] doing anything for her. End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema ‘s top ten of the year. Yes and on Sight and Sound ‘s list, as well. So the snooty-pants Euros are digging the movie. And, it’ll no doubt end up somewhere on my top 20, I think. [Note: it came in at #12.] If I gave you money would you put it higher? No. Well? Depends how much money. C’mon, let’s talk. A hundred grand goes a long way. Would you give me a hundred grand to write that Cosmopolis is the best movie of the year? No! [Laughs.] But it’s a thought. Let’s be honest — at this stage in your career, let’s say you met the most reputable critic in the world, you met him at a bar and he said, “Oh, man, I’m in a real money crunch right now, I will make Cosmopolis my #1 of the year for X amount of dollars,” do you consider it for a second? No. But that’s because I’m too cheap. But… fact is, I have been on those lists, New York Times has been very positive on my last few movies, we got three great reviews from three critics at the New York Times for A Dangerous Method . But we still didn’t get…[laughs]…it didn’t… Still nobody in the States sees your damn movies, it’s Europeans only! That’s right. It doesn’t do much. But, listen, you like the validation, especially when they are intelligent people who write beautifully and when they applaud your movie it is terrific and gratifying. Pragmatically, it doesn’t do much. Better to get good reviews over bad, obviously, but we all know terrible movies that got terrible reviews that made a lot of money. There’s no one to one relationship. You just have to get very ’60s… just go with the flow.

Kristen Stewart, On the Road Coming to America Via IFC Films/Sundance Selects

The 2012 Cannes Film Festival remains a week away, but the wheeling and dealing is already underway — and probably not coincidentally, for competition films starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Last week it was Pattinson’s edgy David Cronenberg collaboration Cosmopolis going to E One , and tonight it’s Stewart’s long-awaited Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road — just announced as the proud acquisition of IFC Films and Sundance Selects. Read on for the full details, and stay tuned to Movieline for more fest news as Cannes 2012 approaches. =========== New York, NY (May 8, 2012) – AMC Networks announced today the acquisition of all US rights to acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles’ ON THE ROAD to be released jointly by the company’s film distribution labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects. Based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, the film stars Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst and features performances by Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga, Elisabeth Moss and Viggo Mortensen. The screenplay is by Jose Rivera (Academy Award® nominee for THE MOTORCYLE DIARIES). The MK2 Production was produced by Nathanael Karmitz, Charles Gillibert, Rebecca Yeldham and Roman Coppola for American Zoetrope. Executive producer Francis Ford Coppola has been developing the project since 1978. The World Premiere for ON THE ROAD is set for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in the Competition Section. A major theatrical release is planned for late Fall. Josh Sapan, CEO and President of AMC Networks said of the film, “Walter Salles has made an ambitious and accomplished film out of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel. It’s a classic road movie with career-making performances from Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley, and a terrific showcase for Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst. This exceptional piece of filmmaking is the cinematic equivalent to the ground-breaking original content that our company produces for its networks.” Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films said: “This is a major step forward for us, and we plan to work across AMC Networks in putting all our resources together to make this theatrical release into a significant cultural event. We will show the same passion in releasing this film as the team took behind producing it. We’re honored to be working with our friends Nathanael Karmitz and Charles Gillibert at MK2, Walter Salles, Rebecca Yeldham, Roman Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola.” Nathanael Karmitz (President-MK2) and Charles Gillibert (Producer-MK2) said: “ON THE ROAD changed the lives of many people, it changed the life of MK2 and it will also have that effect on AMC Networks and its labels’ IFC Films and Sundance Selects. We had a lot of interest from US distributors but thecombination of AMC Networks great promotional appeal with IFC Films and Sundance Selects’ experience in distribution is an innovative and ambitious way to bring ON THE ROAD great success in the US. We were also very touched by the passionate approach of Josh Sapan and Jonathan Sehring and by the enthusiasm of their team.” This marks the fourth time that the two companies have collaborated following Olivier Assayas’ SUMMER HOURS, Abbas Kiarostami’s CERTIFIED COPY, Gus Van Sant’s PARANOID PARK and Assayas’ upcoming SOMETHING IN THE AIR. ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner, and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Together, Sal and Dean travel cross-country in a quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them, in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” — the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women — Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), and Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each adding meaning to their desire for a new way of life. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Walter Salles is credited with helping Brazilian cinema return to international prominence in the late 1990s. His credits include THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES about the life of young Enresto Guevara who later became known as Che. The acclaimed film was a success at the box office and received Academy Award® nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jose Rivera and Best Song. Most recently he directed with Daniela Thomas the film LINHA DE PASSE, which won Sandra Corveloni the Best Actress at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. ###
