‘Virtually Heroes’ − Video Game Characters Search For Meaning At Sundance

We’ve come to expect high-concept portrayals of the human condition from the Sundance Film Festival , but next year, virtual humans will get some art-house love, too. I’m talking about  G.J. Echternkamp’s  feature-film debut, Virtually Heroes , which will get a Park City at Midnight premiere at the festival in January.  This is the Sundance synopsis for the film:  Two self-aware characters in a  Call of Duty -style video game struggle with their screwy, frustrating existence. To find answers, one abandons his partner and mission, seeking to unravel the cheat codes of life. Soldiers searching for meaning as they try to escape an endless cycle of pointless violence? If screenwriter Matt Yamashita set the story in Eastern Europe and Echternkamp shot it in black and white, you’d probably already be hearing Oscar buzz. But Virtually Heroes is set in a video game, which is why it will be a lot more fun.  I’m going to see as soon as physically possible for the following four reasons: 1. Produced by Roger Corman Roger Corman  has propagated the careers of a  a remarkable array of filmmakers via his prolific B-movie production. I’m talking such little-known directors as  James Cameron , Francis Ford Coppola  and Martin Scorsese and low-level actors  Jack Nicholson , Dennis Hopper and Robert De Niro . So when he decides that Virtually Heroes director Echternkamp and screenwriter Matt Yamashida are worth a chance, you should too. 2. Expert Video Gamers You know a film is low-budget when it doesn’t have a trailer. But like any upcoming video-game release, the producers have been flooding the Internet with screenshots, many via the movie’s  Facebook page . And these shots show they know what they’re talking about.  You also know the director knows video games when he laments that he couldn’t afford as many rocket launchers as he wanted. Also, Virtually Heroes  doesn’t just incorporate the standard gaming status display on the screen, which you can see in the above shot. That display features a baseball bat with the infinity symbol, which is a classic shooter-game conceit. Every other weapon has limited ammunition, but the melee weapon — in this case, the bat — can be used forever.  Oh yeah, and anyone who includes teabagging in a live-action movie knows what they’re doing. For those who haven’t been beaten in Halo , teabagging is a gamer taunt that involves repeatedly crouching your character over the body of a defeated enemy. That’s the closest you can come to sexual innuendo when your character has a smooth armored crotch and a “crouch” button. 3. Parody Plot Virtually Heroes isn’t set in a specific shooting game, which means it can effectively be set in all of them. With no established canon to respect, it can hop from setting to setting, reference to reference — each scene in a different level in video game lingo — to make whatever jokes it wants. The movie’s settings range from Vietnam to the Old West to Pirate-themed  combat and it appears that  the damsel in distress is immediately re-kidnapped every time the soldiers in question save her. This requires them to trek through another level, questioning their existence while taking the piss out of Nintendo’s Mario. The parody theme is continued with Mark Hamill turning up as “The Monk”, a wise, brown-robed hermit the heroes consult in search of true wisdom. When you can ask Luke Skywalker to make fun of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and he says yes, that’s worth the price of admission alone. 4. The Director Knows His Satire This may be Echternkamp’s first feature film, but his directorial debut was another sharp parody project. His 2002 short Resurgence II    is about an inept film director dedicated to creating an avant-garde masterpiece by using, it’s revealed, a mail-order “Art Film Flo-Chart” Corman must have seen that and thought: Yes, this man is ready for the B-movie big time.  I agree. Luke McKinney loves the real world, but only because it has movies and video games in it. He responds to every tweet . Follow Luke McKinney on Twitter.  Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Drafthouse Films Starts a Trailer War [VIDEO]

We love trailer compilations of vintage grindhouse sleaze (think 42nd Street Forever ) here at Skin Central, so we’re all fired up and ready to enlist in the Trailer War , a new feature-length compendium of the bizarre, the outrageous and the totally tasteless from the archives of Austin, TX’s own American Genre Film Archive . The AGFA is producing Trailer War in partnership with Drafthouse Films , who earlier this year brought us The FP (2012) and Klown (2010). And in case you’re still unclear about what kind of mind-melting, spine-shattering, blood-boiling experience you’re in for, we quote from the official press release: ” From the high flying, explosive metal mayhem of STUNT ROCK to THUNDER COPS ’ disembodied flying head chaos, each 3 minute masterpiece is like a beckoning portal to another, more exciting dimension. It’s a crippling overdose of towering flames, mechanized destruction, lurking fear, poor sexual choices and spiritual devastation on an apocalyptic scale. You might want to have a cornea donor standing by just in case…because THIS IS GOING TO BURN! ” Following a theatrical tour in early December, Trailer War hits DVD and Blu-ray on December 18 ; the DVD/Blu-ray comes complete with an interview with filmmaker Joe Dante , a former trailer artiste for sleaze master Roger Corman whose Trailers from Hell site we’ve covered on this very blog. But will there be skin, you ask? How about you check out the censored, but still NSFW trailer and tell us, smart guy? Pre-order Trailer War at the Drafthouse Films site now!

Trailers from Hell is Heaven for Film Fans [VIDEOS]

Trailers from Hell , the movie-review site founded by The Howling (1981) director Joe Dante , is the next best thing to sitting down with your favorite director and talking about movies. So why haven’t more people heard of it? Since the site launched in 2007, Dante and his “grindhouse gurus” have provided insight on over 750 classic movie trailers , including quite a few titles from the Mr. Skin Nudity Hall of Fame. Each trailer is presented with commentary from industry pros who were involved in the movie (like Roger Corman ‘s story about being sued by the Hell’s Angels over his 1966 flick The Wild Angels ) or are just big fans (like The People Vs. Larry Flynt writer Larry Karaszewski revealing what those coprophiliacs were really eating in Salo – turns out it was a combination of Swiss chocolate, broken biscuits, and marmalade). But shooting, editing, and hosting hundreds of online videos ain’t free, and so Dante & Co. are now asking the public to chip in with a Kickstarter campaign that’s looking to raise $30,000 to produce more trailers and promote the site. See Jack Hill talking about his WIP classic The Big Doll House (1971), Poison Ivy director Katt Shea on The Pom Pom Girls (1976), and Saw director Darren Bousman on re-making Mother’s Day (1980) after the jump!

John Waters & Provincetown Film Festival Fete Roger Corman

The Provincetown International Film Festival feted Roger Corman over the weekend with John Waters taking to the stage in a laugh-filled interview before a packed house in the eccentric enclave’s town hall. The maverick producer/director/actor offered up highlights from his long career and offered up a litany of tales from his years the low budget B-movie throne. While distributors consistently have spats with the MPAA for getting a “harsh” rating, Roger Corman recalled a time when he went back to the MPAA to ask for a “harsher” rating. “Eight year-olds” don’t want to see a G-rated film,” John Waters observes… Roger Corman received the festival’s 2012 Filmmaker on the Edge Award, while actress Parker Posey received the Excellence in Acting Award and Kirby Dick took the event’s Faith Hubley Career Achievement Award. Dick’s latest, The Invisible War caught a good amount of buzz at the festival with a number of insiders already predicting the title will get an Oscar nomination. But the weekend was owned by Corman. Check out the interview here…

Corman’s World Exclusive: What Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard and More Learned from Roger Corman

What’s second unit? What’s the 180 degree line? These questions and more were often answered by “King of the Bs” Roger Corman in his grindhouse movie heyday, when he famously took newbie future auteurs like James Cameron , Francis Ford Coppola , and Martin Scorsese under his wing while churning out B-movies left and right. In an exclusive deleted scene from Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel , almost a dozen of his former proteges, including Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich , Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme , and Penelope Spheeris recall the crash course in filmmaking he gave them at the start of their careers. Corman’s World opened in limited release to critical acclaim last winter (read Michelle Orange’s review here ) and hits DVD and Blu-ray Tuesday. In Movieline’s exclusive 10-minute deleted scene, fans of Corman’s legendary body of work get a slice of what it was like to be on the ground making movies with him in the ’70s and ’80s, when he gave an entire generation of future American auteurs their start. Included here are Demme recounting the lasting lesson he took from a one-hour lunch with Corman decades ago (“You’ve got to keep the eyeball of the viewer stimulated. That’s why we move the camera around”), Howard admitting that he applied Corman’s lessons on shooting action in his later films, and Spheeris unearthing the meticulously typed notes Corman gave her as she began filming 1984’s Suburbia (“Any plans to get Penelope to France? In France, it is VERY important to advertise the director”). Terminator superproducer (and one-time Corman assistant) Gale Anne Hurd recalls a moment when, freaking out during production, Corman’s soothing words put it all into perspective: “Just calm down and remember, it’s only a movie.” Allan Arkush, John Sayles, Frances Doel, Jim Wynorski, and the late Polly Platt also pop up to share their stories. And finally, Bogdanovich shares the story of how he first got behind the camera, after Corman explained to Bogdanovich and Platt that “anybody could shoot second unit.” Watch Movieline’s exclusive clip: CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL is a tantalizing and star-studded tribute to Roger Corman, Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director producer, and seminal influencing force in modern moviemaking over the last 60 years. Featuring interviews with Hollywood icons and cinematic luminaries, some who launched their careers within Corman’s unforgettable world of filmmaking, including Paul W.S. Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Ron Howard, Jack Nicholson , Eli Roth, Martin Scorsese, William Shatner, along with many others, this documentary chronicles how Corman created his cult film empire, one low-budget success at a time, capitalizing on undiscovered talent, and pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking. Director Alex Stapleton weaves archival footage following Roger’s illustrious career: From his early days of genre-defining classics including the original Fast and Furious, the original Little Shop of Horrors, The Crybaby Killer, The Intruder, House of Usher, and The Wild Angels (which at that point in 1966 was his 100th film) – to present day video of him and his wife Julie on location, still at work as they continue to produce and distribute films outside the studio system: fast, cheap and out-of-this-world! Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel hits DVD and Blu-ray on March 27. Follow Movieline on Twitter .
