Derek Luke Talks About His Film Career And Crossing Over To TV [INTERVIEW]

Link:

By Makula dunbar Laid back, witty and direct, Derek Luke is as composed off-camera as he is on. Still early in his career, Luke has managed to snag top roles and appear in some of the most memorable films and shows of the previous decade. Antwone Fisher, Glory Road and Notorious are only a few of his many acting conquests. Now, in a pursuit to continue living outside of the movie box, Luke is furthering his television career via season three of TNT’s medical drama ‘HawthoRNe,’ premiering June 14. Already an actor who has broken genre barriers of TV, film and beyond, Luke shares his recent experiences, short-term goals and hopes for the future. You were previously involved in another medical show, ‘Trauma’. Was ‘HawthoRNe’ something you always wanted to do or did it just happen? In film, I hadn’t yet had a lot of offers to play a doctor, so it’s actually really cool getting this chance. As I continued doing film, some characters like playing a doctor became consistent in TV. I believe a medical show is such a good structure for television. What are you anticipating most regarding season three of ‘HawthoRNe’? I’m anticipating the quote from TNT (laughs). No, I’m anticipating the new characters, faces and a great storyline. The storyline as far as my character touches on being on a professional, a father and a husband at the same time. I’m looking forward to addressing topics like that and just having fans and audiences respond to situations that are perhaps true to them. You play a surgeon on the show. What was the most difficult thing about preparing for your role? One of the most difficult things about ‘HawthoRNe’ in general was when I signed up the show was already in the process of filming. As soon as I said yes, I had less than a week to actually prepare. It was exciting and organic because I had to prepare as I went. It was just fun working on the human body. We had scenes where we did different medical procedures and I learned so much about the human body and the sophistication of it. It’s really like a computer than man has been unable to duplicate. Reese Witherspoon Marvels At Her ‘Sophisticated’ Kids

‘They’re both learning to play the electric guitar, and it’s kind of awesome,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News When she’s not working, Reese Witherspoon is a full-time dedicated mom to her two kids, daughter Ava, 11, and son Deacon, 7. And although plenty of kids would think having Witherspoon as their mom would be considered cool, the 34-year-old recently revealed to MTV News while promoting her upcoming film “How Do You Know” that it’s the other way around: Her kids are the cool ones. “They’re into the White Stripes right now. They’re both learning to play the electric guitar, and it’s kind of awesome,” she said. “They’re playing ‘Seven Nation Army’ around the house.” An 11-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy into the White Stripes? We have to agree, she has cool kids. “That’s the thing too: Having kids that grow up in L.A., the sophistication level is totally different,” she explained. “They are only into songwriters who write their own music, and I’m like, ‘Wow, I was not that sophisticated as a child.’ ” Witherspoon once told Parents magazine that her kids with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe keep her grounded. “Realizing you’re not anything special to the kids is always a great sort of reminder that you’re just a regular person,” she said. “A regular embarrassing old mom. They know what I do for a living — that I’m an actress — but they haven’t seen any of my movies. Yet.” Speaking of being embarrassing, Witherspoon said her daughter once asked her not to embarrass her at a Carrie Underwood concert. “She said, ‘Mom I really appreciate you taking me to the concert, but will you please not embarrass me in front of Carrie Underwood by singing because she’s a real singer and you’re just, like, a movie singer.’ ” Kids say the darndest things! TSA recommendation: Tell children airport pat-downs are ‘a game’

An expert in the fight against child sexual abuse is raising the alarm about a technique the TSA is reportedly using to get children to co-operate with airport pat-downs: calling it a “game”. Ken Wooden, founder of Child Lures Prevention, says the TSA's recommendation that children be told the pat-down is a “game” is potentially putting children in danger. Telling a child that they are engaging in a game is “one of the most common ways” that sexual predators use to convince children to engage in inappropriate contact, Wooden told Raw Story. Children “don't have the sophistication” to distinguish between a pat-down carried out by an airport security officer and an assault by a sexual predator, he said. The TSA policy could “desensitize children to inappropriate touch and ultimately make it easier for sexual offenders to prey on our children,” Wooden added. added by: maasanova
