Selena Gomez appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman last night – and the actress brought her A game! Asked by the host whether she’s still dating Justin Bieber , Selena replied quite simply: “I’m single.” And is she okay with that? “I’m so good,” Gomez said. Later on, Letterman recalled a time he had Bieber on as a guest and relayed a story about how he made Justin cry. Selena’s quick response? “That makes two of us.” Cue hearty laughter from Letterman and even a fist bump. It’s only Monday and James Franco is already having a good week. And that could translate to a good week for Florida rapper Dangeruss, too. Despite Franco’s much-maligned performance in Oz The Great and Powerful , the movie was the top performer at the box office this past weekend, earning $42.2 million domestically, and the blogosphere is already championing him for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work as the drug dealer Alien in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers . Meanwhile, that picture, which opens wide this weekend, racked up the best per-screen average of the year so far — $90,000 — in limited release at three theaters. So, how is that good for Dangeruss ? For one thing, the tattooed and dreadlocked rapper inspired the actor’s meth-dealing Alien character in Spring Breakers, which is a big reason the actor is in the spotlight again. Better yet, Franco directed Dangeruss’ “Hangin’ With Da Dopeboys” video below, which is featured on the movie’s heat-seeking soundtrack, and that could mean that the media soon stops referring to the rapper as an “underground” artist no matter how crusty he looks. Granted, the track and the video don’t exactly break new ground, but in this digital world, good enough is more than enough to blow up. Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is essentially a movie without a purpose. It’s a sensationalized film about sensationalism, and while it gets away with very little in the way of plot or character growth for much of the film, the ending seems to cast away any sense of obligation to make a grander point one way or the other about youth culture and depravity. Spring Breakers is shot like a music video. It’s cut like a music video. Its characters think they’re in a music video. Taking their cues from MTV, James Franco, Selena Gomez, Rachel Korine, Ashley Benson, and Vanessa Hudgens ’ characters spend no mental energy at all on anything but image. In one scene Franco, who wonderfully transforms into his subtly terrifying character “Alien,” actually gives the girls an MTV Cribs -style tour of all of his “sh*t,” bragging about his money, his guns, his Scarface DVD that plays on repeat, and even his collection of “shorts in every color” (pretty sweet right?). The film tells the story of four college girls – Selena Gomez ’s character being the least open to debauchery, based on a somewhat superficial adherence to Christianity – who want desperately to go on Spring Break and “see the world.” They do whatever it takes to get there, including stealing a car and robbing a restaurant’s patrons, all in the hopes of reaching some fetishized party-girl ideal. They long for the “image” of Spring Break. When it doesn’t pan out, they shove their messy experiences into that image, and wax delusional about how magical the world seems when you don’t have to deal with any of its problems. And when those problems do arise, the girls begin to drop out, heading home by bus, dejected and depressed, and out of the film forever. While Korine seems to have interesting ideas about what greed and childish egoism can lead a person to do, Spring Breakers is more of a collection of party-culture imagery than an exploration of that culture. The opening montage of beer being showered over bare breasts lets the audience know right away what they’re getting into (and for those who are interested: the bare breasts do keep coming). What Korine does best in Spring Breakers is make the audience anxious. From the off-putting “gun-cocking” sounds that accompany many of the cuts between scenes, to the frenetic camerawork, oddly-colored scenes, and reliance on repetition (Korine uses several takes of the same dialogue, looped one after the other, often set in different locations), Korine set out to make viewing Spring Breakers an uncomfortable experience. And when we as the audience finally have somebody speaking for us, when Gomez’s character gets as uncomfortable as we do with Alien and his cohorts, she disappears from the film almost instantly, leaving us feeling trapped in the discomfort. I am assuming this was shot in Florida where the biggest thing in Hip Hop brought a couple hookers on stage to get the crowd gone wild…and if you’ve seen any Spring Break footage or if you’ve had spring break events of your own…you’ll know that along with all the new cases of herpes and unwanted pregnancy…comes a lot of drunk, slutty, 21 year old girls…and this shit is what fuels them….and I love it.

Well the day is finally here, sort of, because Spring Breakers (2013) is opening in limited release. It’s set to open much wider on March 22nd, but for now only New York and LA will be able to see Selena Gomez bouncing around in a bikini and a half-naked Vanessa Hudgens making out with Ashley Benson in a pool. If you’re not interested in drug-fueled Disney star threesomes, you’re pretty much out of luck, because the wide release The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) has Olivia Wilde , but no nudity to make your wand levitate. Harmony Korine is passionate about making films his way. “I just want to be the greatest of all time — the greatest that ever did it,” said Spring Breakers director, who described his latest work as “beach noir.” I sat down with Korine at Movieline’s New York office for an in-depth discussion about Spring Breakers in-depth. Korine talked about how society is still shocked by violent female criminals, his liberal use of nudity in the movie, and the way he likes to work with his actors. “Once (they’re) in character, and understand the story and the world, it all becomes perfect,” he said. “There’s nothing they can do wrong.” Spring Breakers features current Disney star James Franco and former Disney stars Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez in a story about a trip to Florida that takes a dark turn. The film has striking visuals and I asked Korine if that quality is what makes his films so high-concept. “Yeah, I think they’re completely high-concept.
