Source: BreAnna Holmes / Angie Ange In The Morning AUC Student Gets Their Tuition Paid For By Pinky Cole If you somehow haven’t heard of Slutty Vegan yet, it’s one of the fastest-growing vegan restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia. Before they had a storefront and were being sold person to person, the line was already out the door. When Slutty Vegan became a food truck, the lines grew even LONGER. By the time they moved to a brick and mortar store, the line consumed the entire neighborhood it was in. We’re talking police directing traffic and all that for some vegan food. With blessings like that in the form of a serious customer base, the owner & ‘ Fix My Life ‘ booking director Pinky Cole has decided to pass those blessings onto others. One of her most recent good deeds was given to a local student who was having issues getting her school situation squared away. AUC student Khalil Perry posted on social media about his financial troubles, and before he knew it, Pinkly slide right in his DMS. He ended up explaining his whole situation and she ended up taking care of the financial roadblock in his path. YOU LOVE TO SEE IT! Cole paid the rest of Perry’s tuition and now, Khalil is set to go back to school. I still can’t believe it thank you @pinky907 @SluttyVeganATL and the whole AUC for making this happen https://t.co/oGJtUNeI2M — Khalil Perry (@khalilfrmhtxx) September 6, 2019

T he rising cost of higher education has created financial burdens for several students throughout the country. According to a study conducted by Morning Consult , four in 10 students skipped meals to be able to afford textbooks and course materials and three in 10 students decided to opt out of a course due to the high price of required textbooks. The United Negro College Fund has teamed up with the tech-ed company Cengage to address the growing issue through the creation of a program that will provide HBCU students with free access to textbooks. Black students have been significantly impacted by the expensive cost of textbooks. Research shows that 60 percent of African American students decided not to purchase textbooks because the prices were too high, and 52 percent say that the cost affects their finances. Furthermore, 32 percent of Black students have to sacrifice trips home to spend time with their loved ones so they can pay for their textbooks. Through the program, UNCF and Cengage will select 1,000 students to have free access to Cengage’s digital subscription platform which features over 22,000 eBooks and other course materials. “Every student should have an equal opportunity to succeed, and having the right learning materials can have a critical impact on performance,” Michael Hansen , CEO, Cengage, said in a statement. “The high cost of textbooks have prohibited this for many students. This is why we launched Cengage Unlimited – to make quality learning more affordable. UNCF has helped thousands of learners, enabling opportunity for minority students through its financial support and public advocacy. We are proud to partner with UNCF to ease some of the financial burden these students face and ensure they are equipped with the tools they need to reach their full potential.” The leadership team at UNCF believes that this initiative will be instrumental in alleviating the financial burdens faced by HBCU students. “We must continue to invest our time and money in better futures for young people around the country. Partners like Cengage are vitally important to this work and we are pleased to have them as an ally in helping to educate the next generation of leaders,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax , President and CEO of UNCF. Several efforts are being made to help HBCU students better their financial situations. A 13-year-old entrepreneur from Maryland is using his love for baking as an avenue to pay it forward and fight hunger amongst the homeless. According to People Michael Platt —who owns the bakery Michael’s Desserts—donates one of his treats to a homeless person for each dessert that is sold at his store. 13-Year-Old Boy Opens Bakery and Gives a Cupcake to the Homeless for Every Treat Sold https://t.co/aSXWARtERV — People (@people) June 27, 2019 The pre-teen has been passionate about merging his passion for the culinary industry with activism. Cognizant of the issues faced by individuals from underserved communities, he wanted to utilize his baking skills as a way to uplift the homeless population. Every month he makes over 100 treats and delivers them to shelters in the Washington, D.C. area. Building a business has been far from easy for the youngster. He was diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering several seizures. Due to his ailment, he had to be homeschooled and couldn’t participate in sports which is what led him to baking. Platt didn’t let his health issues hold him back from pursuing his dream. In the midst of everything, he was focused on using his home-made desserts as a way to make an impact. “I’ve seen a cupcake inspire smiles, tears, amazement, joy, satisfaction, happiness and other private emotions that I won’t share out of respect for people’s dignity,” he wrote in an Instagram post . “I’ve passed a cupcake to someone sitting with all their possessions in a shopping cart and had them tell me that this one simple act gave them hope. I’ve left a cupcake beside someone who’s sleeping under blankets on a grate because their friend on the grate next to them said it was ok when I asked. That’s why I give away cupcakes.” Platt has partnered with No Kid Hungry—a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to addressing child hunger in America—to further his mission. Aside from his work with the homeless, he’s also using his desserts to highlight Black pioneers. He’s named some of his cupcakes after influential leaders including Maya Angelou , Nelson Mandela , Harriet Tubman , and Martin Luther King Jr. SEE ALSO: Donations Pour In To Help Formerly Homeless Student Attend An HBCU LeBron James Aims To Combat Hunger In Underserved Communities [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3881358″ overlay=”true”]
B illionaire Robert F. Smith ’s act of kindness has inspired other entrepreneurs across the country to pay it forward. A Black-owned barbershop in North Carolina raised money to help high school seniors pay off their debt so they would be able to graduate, WBTV reported. Season Bennett learned 14 seniors at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte wouldn’t get their diplomas with the rest of their class if the overdue school fees weren’t paid. So Bennett asked the community for help eliminating the $4,500 debt. https://t.co/tELwhA0miB — NewsChannel 12 (@wcti12) May 30, 2019 After seeing Smith’s commencement speech—where he promised to eliminate the student loan debt of Morehouse College’s entire 2019 graduating class— Season Bennett was prompted to do something special for students in Charlotte. Bennett, who owns Headlines Barbershop with her husband, got in contact with the staff at East Mecklenburg High School to see if any seniors had outstanding debts that would prevent them from graduating. After learning that 14 students collectively had $4,500 in debt, Bennett decided to raise funds for the teenagers. Many of the fees they had were tied to their participation in the school’s band program. With the help of her local community, she was able to raise enough money to cover the debt. NFL player Thomas Davis was instrumental in helping Bennett and the barbershop reach its goal. “It seems like that’s just basic in our culture. You need to get at least your high school diploma,” Bennett told the news outlet. Several individuals have stepped up to help high school students pay off their debt to walk across the graduation stage and receive their hard-earned diplomas. In May Valerie Castile —the mother of Philando Castile —paid off the lunch debt for students at Robbinsdale Cooper High School so that they could graduate. Outstanding high school lunch debt has become an evolving issue across the country. According to USA Today , 75 percent of school districts in the U.S. had unpaid student meal debt during the 2016-2017 academic year. T his year’s Tony Awards could turn out to be a historic evening for Black women in the realm of dance. According to Forbes , choreographer and artistic director Camille A. Brown is the first Black woman to be nominated in the Best Choreography category in 23 years. #ICYMI this piece about @CamilleABrown #dance #choreographers https://t.co/AZnPkrZzVK — Dance/USA (@DanceUSAorg) June 7, 2019 Brown—who is the founder of the New York City-based Camille A. Brown & Dancers dance company—is nominated for her work on the play Choir Boy . The play, which was written by Tarell Alvin McCraney , chronicles the experiences of a Black student who leads a gospel choir. Brown intertwined the storyline with powerful forms of dance expression. She says the premise of the play prompted her to pull inspiration from South African dance traditions, Step dance routines, and Juba dance which was started by Africans who were enslaved. “When I was hearing the spirituals [in Choir Boy] I was thinking about the historical context of them because they’re over 200 years old, but then looking at the men [in the cast] and how they are walking in life in 2019,” she told Deadline in an interview. “I told them that this was a time for them to be unapologetic on stage, and to step into what all this means. I told them, you’re carrying this historical information but you’re also carrying who you are. It’s not just about me coming in and putting in steps – there has to be the need and intention, an urgency, this combination of working and moving our bodies in space and having a dialogue.” The award-winning choreographer has had a storied career in the dance industry. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and went on to dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Brown’s dance company has performed internationally and she has led the choreography for shows that include Once on This Island and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! . Brown says being nominated for the Tony Award is meaningful and speaks volumes about the need for more representation in dance and theatre. “When I wanted to do theatre, I didn’t see many reflections of myself. This Tony nomination is so important to me, and has deep meaning, because the last black woman that was nominated in this category was Marlies Yearby in 1996, for Rent ,” she said. “I have I hope that a young black girl who wants to choreograph for theater but doesn’t necessarily see many black females can see a reflection of herself through me.” The 73rd Tony Awards will air on June 9. R eceiving over 100 college acceptance letters can be overwhelming for a high school graduate, but for 18-year-old Normandie Cormier , it was clear that she would begin her next chapter at a historically Black college and university. According to USA Today , after being accepted to 139 colleges through the Common App and the Common Black College App, the Louisiana native has decided to further her education at Xavier University in New Orleans. Most parents and guidance counselors advise high school seniors to apply to more than one college — to have at least one “backup school.” Well, Normandie Cormier of Lafayette had more than 100 backups. https://t.co/JFTxju45Cc — azcentral (@azcentral) May 29, 2019 Cormier has always displayed excellence when it came to academics. Early on she decided that she wanted to enter a program that allowed her to simultaneously earn her high school diploma and a college degree. With the support of her family, she enrolled in Early College Academy which is a part of South Louisiana Community College’s campus. Outside of school, she was very involved in her local community, often mentoring young girls who want to pursue careers in STEM, tutoring youngsters and adults, and volunteering at a nursing home. The journey hasn’t been easy for Cormier. She’s dealt with several immune system issues which have caused many hospital visits. Despite her health ailments, she prevailed. She ended up graduating with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree. Her dedication to her education and making a positive impact in her community caught the attention of higher education institutions across the globe and earned her $8.7 million in scholarships and grants from GE, Burger King and other companies and organizations. Her hospital visits led her to choose a career path in medicine. “Since I was a child, I was always in and out of the hospital,” Cormier told USA Today. “When I was young, it affected my self-esteem. But now I can use it to inspire others.” She said selecting Xavier University of Louisiana was an easy decision because her personal goals are aligned with the school’s values. The aspiring doctor hopes that her journey will inspire others. E arlier in the month, a video went viral of Alexander McNab being harassed by six campus cops at Barnard College , an all-women’s school affiliated with Columbia University in New York City. But while the video caused outrage from staff and faculty, one student went out of her way to claim that McNab appearing to be racially profiled had nothing to do with his brown skin. SEE ALSO: Students Suspended For Brawl While Cop In Video Who Assaulted One Of Them Goes Unpunished The student, who described herself as a “(very) light-skinned Jewish woman” named Morgan Raum, defended campus security in a piece she recently authored for the Columbia Beacon, an alternative campus publication. “I would much prefer Barnard Public Safety officers prioritize safety rather than political correctness,” Raum wrote . “The fact of the matter is an adult male entered a closed women’s college campus after 11 p.m. and repeatedly refused to show his identification to Public Safety officers, despite admitting that he knew about the rule. To be honest, I’m upset he was allowed to get as far as Milstein before the officers took action.” Raum went on to say McNab was stopped simply because of his gender, an excuse that rings hollow since there are always male students from Columbia on Barnard’s campus. “For context: Columbia students have access to Barnard libraries. After 11 p.m., students are supposed to show their IDs to public safety before entering campus. But this rule is loosely enforced and hardly followed. I have always just nodded to the officer. Nothing like this,” Andrew Wang , who identified himself as a Columbia student, wrote in his tweet below that includes a video of the incident. This happened yesterday at Barnard College. A black Columbia University student was entering the library when he was racially profiled by public safety officers. They took his ID. They pinned him down. : Caroline Cutlip pic.twitter.com/7CeUDQSuIH — Andrew Wang (@andrwwang) April 12, 2019 “I can’t help but feel that while Alexander McNab may have been ‘profiled,’ in all likelihood it was due to his being a male student on a women’s college campus after 11PM who repeatedly refused to show his identification,” she wrote. In case you missed it, McNab refused to show his ID to security officers who the same demands for identification from students of color. Officers eventually physically assaulted McNab inside a campus building even after he handed them his identification, another fact the “very light-skinned” Raum failed to acknowledge. “I didn’t violate anybody. Get your hands off of me,” McNab says to the security officers. After looking at McNab’s ID card, one of the officers responded, “Let’s walk outside.” McNab said he feared going outside with the officers and wanted to stay inside the building where there were witnesses. Instead of examining his ID and allowing him to go, the officers confiscated McNab’s card, saying they needed to verify that he was an “active” Columbia student. As of Tuesday morning, the security officers were reportedly still on leave and Barnard was hiring an independent investigator.
