Factory releasing the Mystery Science Theater 3000 take on Ray Dennis Steckler’s horror musical The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies on DVD this week — coming on the heels of the widespread acclaim for Sundance midnight entry Hobo with a Shotgun — it seemed like as good a time as any to look at some of the most unwieldy, memorable, and occasionally even poetic movie titles ever concocted. VIDEO: So That’s Why Hereafter Was Nominated for an Oscar

Perhaps in response to all those people left stymied by Hereafter ‘s Oscar nomination for visual effects (especially when Tron: Legacy got shut out of the category, poor thing), Warner Bros. have released a shot-by-shot reel showing how VFX supervisor Michael Owens and Scanline VFX put together that nine-minute opening tsunami sequence. And when you see how the live-action parts came together combining CG, green screen, water tanks, and on-location photography — well, “Oscar-nominated Hereafter ” doesn’t sound so silly anymore.

Can we all agree that the Thor marketing materials thus far have been a little less than thrilling? Good. Because now we really have something to look forward to from the Kenneth Branagh-directed Marvel actioner — an epic-scale tent pole set on two worlds with a sense of humor about itself, lots of swirling, hammer-smashing action, fantastical villains and creatures to ogle, and the acknowledged fetishizing of Chris Hemsworth’s abs.

Trailer: Choose Oscar Short Film Winners Based on Short Clip from Each Nominee

Once again, Magnolia Pictures will be bringing all of the Academy Award nominees for Best Short Film in the Documentary, Animation and Live Action categories to theaters, and also to your home via VOD. So those who want to get serious about predicting the Oscars can watch them all, take notes and crunch whatever numbers you feel necessary before making a decision. Or if you only want to get sort of serious, you can try to guess based on the trailer, which shows the title and a few seconds from each nominee.

Ewan McGregor is trying to sort it all out, and he’s also just met a beautiful girl played by the lovely Mélanie Laurent from Inglorious Basterds . Cheer up, buddy! I have a feeling everything’s going to be alright.
