Foo Fighters Opener Joy Formidable Talk ‘Surreal’ Tour

‘We’re loving every single minute of it,’ Welsh rockers tell MTV News of playing large venues. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker The Joy Formidable Photo: Getty Images Shortly before Welsh rock band the Joy Formidable took the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden to open for the Foo Fighters earlier this month, they sat down with MTV News to discuss what a great experience the tour has been for them. “It’s such a delight being on tour with the Foos and Social Distortion,” lead singer Ritzy Bryan said, giving a shout-out to the tour’s other opening act. “The Foos heard a track of ours on the radio and really liked it,” she explained of how they came to be on the tour. “It just happened really naturally, you know, picking up on a band, supporting new music. [They] invited us on tour on the back of that. “It’s very surreal,” she added. “We’ve been playing some really big venues.” Though the band is accustomed to playing larger venues back in the U.K., all three members, including bassist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas, agree that playing Madison Square Garden really means something special. “When you talk to people about Madison Square Garden back on home soil, it’s like, ‘Wow, what an iconic venue,’ ” Dafydd weighed in with a big smile. The already chipper musicians all lit up even more when we asked them what’s next for them. “We’re very, very busy now writing our next record,” Bryan said. “[We’re] just losing ourselves in that at the moment. We’re very, very happy to be here and loving every single minute of it.” The Joy Formidable are currently headlining their own leg of a North American tour. Visit their website for dates. NeedToBreathe Give Taylor Swift Fans A Little ‘Rock And Roll’

‘We’ll see the mom wearing a NeedToBreathe shirt and the kid wearing the Taylor Swift shirt!’ lead singer Bear Rinehart tells MTV News of fans on tour. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker, with additional reporting by Morgan Schwartz NeedToBreathe Photo: MTV News As Taylor Swift ‘s super successful Speak Now Tour makes its way across North America this summer, her “rock-and-dance-a-billy” opening act NeedToBreathe took a moment out of their grueling schedule to tell MTV News all about life on the road with one of today’s biggest stars. “We’ve been a band for almost 11 years,” lead singer Bear Rinehart said. “It’s been little steps along the way, you know? Playing in our hometown for the first time at a club that we loved, and then getting signed by Atlantic Records, and then Taylor called and wanted us to tour with her ’cause she’s a fan.” During the four-man band’s first soundcheck of the tour, the guys were surprised to discover just how much of a NeedToBreathe fan Taylor is. “[It was] her and her family sitting out in the crowd, like, singing along to every word of the songs that we’re doing in the soundcheck,” drummer Joe Stillwell recalled. “It’s a little surreal to kind of see that from somebody that you see on such a big scale all the time.” While South Carolina’s NeedToBreathe have been on the music scene for a while now, the Speak Now tour has been an experience unlike any other for the group. “We haven’t played in venues this big, so that’s been a little bit to get used to,” Bear noted. “The first night you walk out there and there’s 20,000 people, it’s like, ‘Whoa, this is pretty intense!’ ” “Her fans, for the most part, are younger than our fanbase,” said lead guitarist Bo Rinehart (Bear’s brother). “Some of these people, it’s the first rock and roll show they’ve ever been to,” Bear said with a laugh about Taylor’s hard-core fans. “Sometimes we’ll see the mom wearing a NeedToBreathe shirt and the kid wearing the Taylor Swift shirt!” The band’s fourth studio album, The Reckoning, hits stores in September. New Yorkers Celebrate ‘Groundbreaking’ Gay Marriage Passage

‘This couldn’t have come at a better time,’ says Gay Pride Week participant outside the Stonewall Inn. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images NEW YORK — With the historic passing of the same marriage equality bill in New York State on Friday night, the streets of the city have since been flooded with excited members of the LGBT community and other supporters on what just happens to be Gay Pride Week. Crowds of people have continued to drop by the Stonewall Inn, the famous site that has come to be known as the birthplace of the world’s gay rights movement following the infamous “Stonewall riots” that followed a police raid on the bar in 1969. Erin Healy of Albany, New York, recalled the groundbreaking moment. “I was with my friends last night and everyone was like, ‘The bill’s going to get passed!’ So we were like, ‘Turn on the news!’ and then all of a sudden it was like, ’29 to 33, it’s passed!’ ” “I just think this is such a groundbreaking moment in gay history,” expressed 21-year-old Brianna McDonald. “This vote was so important to the young crowd because it actually gives us something to look forward to, to get married if we want to.” “We are in the gayest part of town!” laughed Tony Benninelli of Queens, who was out with his friends in the West Village celebrating Gay Pride. “This couldn’t have come at a better time.” Jesse Kissel was especially keen on noting the part that both the Stonewall Inn and New York City played when it came to this epic moment. “This is where it all started,” he smiled. “This was where the revolution began, where people started realizing that we need rights and privileges.” The passing of the act gave Miami resident Jorge Orobitg a new hope for his own state. “New York is a big state,” he said, “so that means we’re heading in the right direction.” ( Read how California residents reacted to the news. ) “Hopefully, this will sprout a nationwide thing,” Erin Healy said. “It’s just something ridiculous to me that it’s taken even this long to happen.” Share your reactions to New York’s same-sex marriage bill on Facebook. Deena Brings ‘A Whole Bunch Of Vocabulary’ To ‘Jersey Shore’

Rookie explains her additions to the ‘Shore’ lexicon, including ‘backpack’ and ‘stepstool.’ By By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker, with reporting by Jim Cantiello “Jersey Shore” star Deena Nicole Cortese Photo: MTV News In its first two seasons, MTV’s “Jersey Shore” introduced America to countless new words and expressions that have made a lasting impression on pop culture, including “GTL,” “grenades” and “T-shirt time.” Now, with the addition of castmember Deena Nicole Cortese , fans of the show can expect a brand-new round of crazy terminology and phrases. The 23-year-old recently sat down with MTV News and promised to bring “a whole bunch of vocabulary” to the show this season. In Thursday night’s episode, Deena called Sammi Sweetheart a “backpack” because of how she always clings to Ronnie. She told MTV News “backpack” can also be used to describe “one of the … guys that follow me around the club and stuff.” As she was a bit slap-happy on her first night with the cast, Deena used herself as an example of a “slaptard,” which she defined as a “slappy” girl. “I was a complete slaptard the first night,” she said. “I was, like, the biggest slaptard ever.” Deena also dished on one of the harsher terms she has added to the extensive “Jersey Shore” lexicon. “This is horrible,” she admitted, “but you know when you, like, meet a girl but her friend’s hotter? You wanna get in with the hotter girl, so you kind of befriend the not-so-pretty girl?” Deena would consider the not-so-pretty girl in this scenario to be a “stepstool.” “It’s horrible,” she giggled. “But, I mean, it’s real life. It happens in real life.” What’s your favorite “Jersey Shore” phrase? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore,” airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
