Joe Wright to Direct 50 Shades of Grey Movie?

British director Joe Wright has emerged as a favorite to direct the wildly anticipated movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, reports indicate. Gus Van Sant has reportedly been angling for the job, as well, so who knows, but Wright, 40, has ties with both Universal and Focus Features. The director has helmed Anna Karenina, Hanna, Pride and Atonement , which features some major heat. The man can film a sex scene, people! As for who he’d be filming, should he in fact land this major directorial role? That remains to be seen, but the speculation is off the charts as always. Who should play Christian and Ana? Robert Zemeckis’ Flight Trailer: Denzel Washington Runs Into Turbulence

After riding train after train and whatnot , Denzel Washington is back navigating giant hunks of careening metal in Robert Zemeckis ‘s Flight , which marks the director’s return to live-action filmmaking after a decade spent trying (in vain, IMO) to conquer the uncanny valley. So how well do director and star succeed in piquing your interest in a movie about an airline pilot (Washington) who saves a plane full of passengers only to have his heroism — and drinking habits — come under scrutiny in the aftermath? Below, watch the first trailer for Flight , which boasts a stellar cast surrounding Washington that includes Bruce Greenwood, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, and Melissa Leo. It’s not all that revealing, which is a good thing in this age of spoiler-happy marketing, though there’s potential for some big unknown twist to rock us to our core in the last act. So what’s there to look forward to? Washington as a normal dude trying to figure it out, I suppose — or as a hero hiding some dark secret, which would be more interesting — and, of course, the sight of Denzel rolling a freaking airplane on top of some houses , or whatever. That should be enough for me. And yet… I’m just lukewarm on Flight . Is there any reason to see it besides the fact that it’s Denzel being Denzel and Zemeckis maybe-recapturing the knack for storytelling on display in his best live-action hits? Head to Apple for the trailer premiere. Then again, I am about to get on a flight tomorrow morning, so forgive me if I’m not too juiced for a movie about the one airplane that falls apart in the sky for no good reason. Flight synopsis: In this action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane? Flight is in theaters November 2. [via Apple ]

Celebrity Apprentice: Debbie Gibson, Dee Snider Fired

Proving just how little NBC has worth watching these days, Donald Trump and Celebrity Apprentice were given a three-hour episode last night. Three . Sad as that is, with over $1 million at stake for charity, the stakes were raised, things in the boardroom got quite heated and two people got the axe. Debbie Gibson was the first of two casualties, taking the fall after the episode’s initial task – to create and sell a “My New York” celebrity guidebook. In the boardroom, the losing women brought out their manicured claws, and while Aubrey O’Day seemed like the obvious choice to get the boot, she was safe. Thus, Debbie Gibson was fired. Just when it seemed that things were about to simmer down, Trump pulled a fast one teamed up Teresa, Aubrey, Arsenio, Clay Aiken and Paul Teutul, Sr. Up against them? Lou Ferrigno, Lisa, Dayana, Dee, and Penn Jillette. Arsenio and Lou took charge as project managers for the night’s second challenge. In the end, Arsenio’s team won the challenge, bringing the former late night host to tears. He scored some major cash for the Magic Johnson Foundation. Lou brought Dayana Mendoza and Dee Snider with him to the Boardroom. Donald had a tough decision to make, but he ultimately decided to ax Dee. Sad to see Dee and Debbie go? Did the Donald make the right firings? Are you enjoying this season so far? Who do you think will make it all the way?

Total Recall Trailer: Watch Now!

Colin Farrell takes on the role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall , in theaters August 3. The film is not being described as a remake by its producers, yet it obviously bears similarities to the early ’90s hit. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred as the fate of one man’s world hangs in the balance, with the search for the truth taking on new meaning with each passing instant after his experiment with the company Rekall … like the original. Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and John Cho also star. Here’s the trailer: Total Recall Trailer

Pixar Hits a Girl Power Bullseye with New Brave Trailer

Fingers are crossed that Pixar bounces back from the uncharacteristic critical disappointment that was Cars 2 with their next effort, Brave — a foray into Disney princess territory about a headstrong young Scottish lass (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) who defies tradition in her parents’ kingdom. A new trailer for the animated adventure promises no small measure of spunky girl power as our heroine Merida upends an archery contest where doofus candidates are vying for her hand in marriage. It’s not a traditional trailer so much as it is a scene from the film, but it conveys a sense of what to expect, tonally. (Watch the first full trailer here .) From what’s been released so far it seems Brave ‘s story will be its strength; the round, cartoony CG-animated character design doesn’t appeal much to me, but Merida’s spirit is infectious in this twist on the familiar medieval archery scenario. (That’s Billy Connolly voicing her father and Emma Thompson as her mom, in case you were curious.) Brave hits theaters June 22; leave your impressions below!

Warner Bros. Somehow Planning Another I Am Legend for Will Smith

At one point following the critical and commercial success of his 2007 post-apocalyptic blockbuster I Am Legend , director Francis Lawrence entertained the notion of coming back with star Will Smith for prequel, but eventually that possibility trailed off and Lawrence casted doubt onto his involvement with the potential project. But today Warner Bros. announced a deal with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment , who have tapped screenwriter Arash Amel to write a follow-up to the $584M hit. Whether or not it’ll be a prequel or some sort of direct sequel is unknown, though it’s reportedly being created for Smith. Let’s speculate away: Just how WB can possibly pull off another installment? What makes the project a curious — and, frankly, conspicuous — one is the way in which Lawrence wrapped up I Am Legend , based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 sci-fi novel. [Spoiler alert] Following a global pandemic that wiped out 90% of the world’s population, scientist Robert Neville (Smith) had only just discovered a cure when, at the film’s conclusion, he faced an onslaught of mutated vampire-people solo and seemingly met his own demise. Of course WB wants their star and his famously potent box office draw to headline another I Am Legend movie. A prequel would explain Smith’s presence most easily, but Deadline suggests that won’t be the case. So how might they bring Smith back otherwise? Retcon the last scene in the first film, using the alternate ending in which Neville makes grudging peace with the vampire thingies? Maybe the survivors colony has cloning capabilities? Hell, why not bring in a long-lost twin brother for Neville who became a brilliant virologist as well – I Am Also Legend ? Whatever it turns out to be, at least it has a shot at being ” one of the greatest movies ever made ,” amirite? Warner Bros Plans More ‘I Am Legend’ With Will Smith [Deadline]
